VIDEO: Jamie Lee Curtis sang Hungarian song after receiving Oscar award
Jamie Lee Curtis praised her Hungarian roots after receiving the Academy Award for best supporting actress. She also sang a Hungarian nursery rhyme to show off her Hungarian knowledge.
Jamie Lee Curtis received the Academy Award for best supporting actress for her role in Everything Everywhere All at Once. In her short press conference, she proudly talked about her Hungarian roots, as hvg.hu pointed out.
In honour of her parents
Both of her parents, Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh had been nominated for the Oscar, but neither of them had the chance to bring it home throughout their career. Therefore, it was a huge deal for the actress to win the award after her very first nomination.

“My mother and my father were both nominated for Oscars in different categories,” Curtis said during her speech when she talked about accepting the Academy Award in honour of her parents.
“Let me just be honest, I don’t believe in a world where there are a bunch of people looking down on us” – Curtis said to the question of what would her parents think about her success.
“I think we are them in our actions, deeds, and ideas. I am a proud product of them, and I know they would be incredibly proud of me.”
To the question of whether it could be considered a “semi-Hungarian Oscar”, she quickly replied, “oh yeah, the lower half!” She even showed off her Hungarian knowledge by singing “Katica, katica felmászott egy fára, leesett…”, an extract of a well-known nursery rhyme.
“I love my Hungarian heritage” – said Curtis to the last question, before ironically saying “please don’t cancel me” – sensing that her statement did not resonate well with the audience.
The actress’ Jewish paternal grandparents emigrated to the United States from Mátészalka, Eastern Hungary. She visited the town two years ago while shooting the movie Borderlands in Hungary. Her late father also visited the town several times.
