Jobbik MPs to publish asset declarations of family members
Budapest (MTI) – By the end of January, lawmakers of the radical nationalist Jobbik party will voluntarily publish the asset declaration of family members living in their household and expect the same from other MPs.
Gyorgy Szilagyi, a Jobbik lawmaker, told the press on Saturday that they want to show an example in order to make public life more transparent. He called on all lawmakers not to “hide behind their parties”, adding that it will show by January 31 who has things to hide and who hasn’t.
He said if Jobbik enters government, it will make it compulsory for all lawmakers to make public not only their own assets but also of family members in their household.
In December last year, cabinet chief Janos Lazar told a local newspaper that he would support a proposal to make the financial situation of politicians’ family members more transparent in a way it respects privacy rights. “As a member of parliament, and also as a husband and father, I will support a fair and reasoned legal amendment to this end”, the ruling Fidesz politician added.
