Hungarian co-production film about the Tatar invasion
The National Film Institute is providing HUF 1.26 billion in production funding for the Hungarian-Mongolian-English collaboration. The film will take us back to the 13th century. Batu Khan, the grandson of the world-conquering Genghis Khan, arrives in Esztergom, Hungary. But before he can conquer Europe, he must destroy the Hungarian castle first.
The handful of Hungarian defenders can expect no help against the huge, overwhelming force.
“We are making a film about an event of Hungarian but also world-historical significance. It would have had unforeseeable consequences if, at the end of the winter of 1242, Batu Khan had not turned his armies back from Esztergom but had continued his advances. As well as providing exciting entertainment, our film makes the viewer think about the reasons behind Batu Khan’s decision. We are proud that, in addition to the full creative and professional Hungarian filming crew, several renowned foreign actors and internationally renowned professionals have agreed to play the roles,” says the creative team.
The historical film will be shot in Hungary in the autumn.
