The Hungarian-Mongolian-English collaboration will produce an action drama. The name of the movie is 1242 – At the Gates of the West. Kevin Spacey will play the main villain of the film, while Christopher Lambert will reportedly play an old knight.

Hungarian co-production film about the Tatar invasion

The National Film Institute is providing HUF 1.26 billion in production funding for the Hungarian-Mongolian-English collaboration. The film will take us back to the 13th century. Batu Khan, the grandson of the world-conquering Genghis Khan, arrives in Esztergom, Hungary. But before he can conquer Europe, he must destroy the Hungarian castle first.

The handful of Hungarian defenders can expect no help against the huge, overwhelming force.

“We are making a film about an event of Hungarian but also world-historical significance. It would have had unforeseeable consequences if, at the end of the winter of 1242, Batu Khan had not turned his armies back from Esztergom but had continued his advances. As well as providing exciting entertainment, our film makes the viewer think about the reasons behind Batu Khan’s decision. We are proud that, in addition to the full creative and professional Hungarian filming crew, several renowned foreign actors and internationally renowned professionals have agreed to play the roles,” says the creative team.

The historical film will be shot in Hungary in the autumn.

The film, based on a script by Áron Horváth and Joan Lane, will be shot in Visegrád and Bélapátalva, among other places. The director of the film is Péter Soós, who is the director of Budapest anno and Áldott állapot. He is also responsible for the popular Hungarian series Jóban Rosszban, index.hu reports.

The biggest star of the film will be American actor Kevin Spacey.

Director Péter Soós told 24.hu that Spacey will play an Italian cardinal, the main villain of the story. Christopher Lambert will also join the cast. He will appear as an old Hungarian crusader. According to the news, Lambert has not yet signed a contract, but the deal is close. The situation is similar for Eric Roberts and Terence Stamp.

The editor of the film will be Oscar-nominated Kant Pan.

Greg Powell, who worked on James Bond and Mission Impossible, among other projects, will be responsible for the action scenes. Batu Khan will be played by a Mongolian actor. The premiere of the movie will be in 2023.
