Dobrev to lead ex-husband, former PM Gyurcsány’s DK party, eyes 2026 election

Leftists “are also needed” to unseat the government, MEP of the opposition Democratic Coalition (DK) Klára Dobrev said at a party event held to select constituency heads and prospective MPs on Thursday.
She vowed that DK would run in the 2026 general election with an full independent list of 106 individual candidates. Leftists, liberals, greens and conservatives “who want a change of government” would be needed to campaign vigorously, she added. Dobrev said the “Orbán regime has now crept into our everyday lives … in schools and on the street, and gradually into people’s souls too”.

The right wing was now openly intimidating anyone who did not “envisage a right-wing, Christian world”, she said. The bill on the transparency of public life would give the government “powers reminiscent of the darkest times”, Dobrev said, adding that such powers would allow the authorities to start proceedings against anyone “who is not Christian enough, not right-wing enough, or lives in a non-traditional family”.
The Pride ban, she added, was “just the beginning”. Dobrev vowed to “never let go of the hand” people from the LGBTQ community, and politicians who stand up for them risked losing voters in 2026.
She also accused people on the right of speaking “ambiguously and cautiously” about Russia and President Vladimir Putin and withholding support from Ukraine. She added that the national interest was for Ukraine to be a full EU member when it has met the conditions to become one.
