Farewell to the iconic Budapest Körszálló: The end of an era for Hotel Budapest

The iconic Körszálló, also known as Hotel Budapest, has officially closed its doors for good, marking the end of an era for one of the city’s most emblematic landmarks. The last guest has departed from the historic 64-meter-tall building, which opened on New Year’s Eve in 1967 and has since captured the hearts of locals and visitors alike.

In its final days, the hotel staff and guests bid farewell in a nostalgic atmosphere, cherishing the memories tied to the 19-story cylindrical structure, which offered breathtaking panoramic views of the city, Turizmus.com writes. “Although the hotel’s doors have closed forever, its memory will live on in the hearts of Budapest residents and tourists,” said Balázs Klemm, CEO of Hotel & More Group, the building’s last operator.

From hotel to dormitory and beyond

The Körszálló’s journey took a significant turn during the pandemic when the Danubius Hotels Group, its long-time owner, leased it out after a 15-month closure. Starting in September 2021, Hotel & More Group operated it as a dormitory and corporate worker accommodation. In May 2024, Danubius Hotels sold the property to Market Asset Management Plc. The new owner allowed Hotel & More to continue operations temporarily, but reports soon emerged about the building’s uncertain future.

Demolition and rebuilding plans

According to October reports, the Körszálló, designed by renowned architect György Szrogh, is set to be demolished due to structural concerns. Plans are underway to rebuild the tower in nearly its original form, though with significant interior modifications, including converting 280 hotel rooms into 47 apartments. Despite these plans, the Körszálló’s current status as a locally protected building in Budapest’s 2nd district adds complexity to its redevelopment. The building’s fate has sparked public interest and debate. In response to media speculation, the owner told Turizmus.com that no final decision has been made about the demolition or redevelopment.

An enduring legacy

As Budapest bids farewell to one of its most distinctive architectural landmarks, the Körszálló’s legacy as a symbol of modernist design and urban history remains firmly etched in the city’s identity. While its future hangs in the balance, its memory endures in the hearts of those who experienced its charm and history.
