LMP: Hungarian minimum pension of 79 euros per month is not enough

The government is “cruelly letting old people down” by keeping the minimum pension low and indexing pensions below inflation, Erzsébet Schmuck, co-leader of the opposition LMP party, said on Monday, and called on the government to raise pensions by 4 percent in January, as well as increase the minimum pension “two-and-a-half-fold to above a monthly 71,000 forints (EUR 197)”.

Schmuck said that pensions would currently be indexed by 3 percent, whereas, for example, the price of motorway vignettes had gone up by 3.9 percent, with regard to inflation. In addition, she said, pensioners would only be given the increase at the end of 2021, with the government “using their money for free” all year long.

Schmuck slammed the government for not planning to increase the minimum pension, which had been the same 28,500 forints a month for the past 13 years.

Schmuck said that giving pensioners an extra one-fourth of a month’s pension this year was “eyewash”, and suggested that the measure was hardly suitable to prevent the elderly from being impoverished.

The lawmaker also urged the government to reduce the VAT on fundamental food products from 27 to 5 percent.

  1. Appalling and totally un-acceptable.
Politicians – Members of Government – 13 years – what an absolute absurdity and humanitarian act of disgrace, displaying negligence in Duty of Care – fair and reasonable Humanitarian care and compassion that includes PENSION that is of a livable remuneration level.
This 13 years – the derelict abandonment by Government and the wider Politicians of Hungary, of the “need” of Pension remuneration – to a humanitarian fairness system – that is based and formulated on 21st century – cost of life & living – that avoids not throwing on-going numbers of ageing Hungarians in the “gloaming” years of there lives – living in Poverty.
This humanitarian act of wrongness where honestly is compassion and empathy ???
This catastrophic humanitarian failing by Government of Politicians over the past 13 years, that is Driving causing ongoing division unrest in citizens – the population of Hungarians – that witnessed amongst us daily in our lives – who are FACTUALLY – living below the Poverty line.
Hungary – declining population – ageing population – deaths per year greater than the Birth of Hungarian babies – not a healthy picture that is Fact.
The “brain drain” philosophy adapted by the young of Hungary – from “all stations in life” – that career opportunities of advancement and wages – quality of life – opportunities are greater – moving out and away from Hungary – than what affords them in there country of birth and education – a Major Concern for Government and Hungary.
The continuation of an unjustified disproportioned average wage earning level – to those who “stick it out” or are in no position to challenge or change it, the “need” that word repeated, is for action by the Government to ADJUST and Correct – the disclarity or disjointed factor, in the average wage of the greater number of the Hungarian workforce, that sees it bought in line and into the 21st century of wage and cost of living Economics.
The National elections of 2022 are rapidly approaching.
We live in a country economically ravaged by this ongoing novel coronavirus.
The latest unemployment government released figure communicates at 4% -which is muchly low, and in fact – my opinion nearer 7% or higher.
We are challenged – Hungary – we ALL are Challenged.
Pension – to those retired over 65 years of age – a country of 26 million in population – Democratic Parliamentary System of Government – great variations of Functionality and Lifestyle – than Hungary – much younger country, ongoing Political arguments of there Pension and
Unemployment Allowances Payment Structure, are never out of the Political agenda.
This country I refer does have a 45% as a “mean” higher cost of living level than Hungary.
This country – 65 years and older – monthly Pension paid to a Single person – is huf 429.500.
Rise up Hungary – UNITED – orderly – Peacefully – using Democracy to make change – place questions in the Right places – that will get Factual answers.
Come into the “real” world of the 21st century – and what a time in the History of Hungary – to take a major step forward and RIGHT this blatant position of WRONGNESS – that has been for 13 years – Pension remuneration, and the appalling Basic Wage level of working Hungarians.
