Masses of Hungarians move to live and work in Austria
The number of Hungarians living in Austria has increased significantly since 2019, according to the statistics of the Austrian immigration office.
According to 444.hu, in 2019, 79 thousand Hungarians lived in our Western neighbour. In 2024, that number grew to 94.7 thousand. In Burgenland, a former territory of the Kingdom of Hungary and Austria’s Easternmost territory, 40,900 locals were born outside the country. That is 13,6% of the region’s population and is a 22.8% rise compared to 2019.
The biggest foreign group in Burgenland are the Hungarians. Their number is slightly above 8,300. The following group is those born in Germany (4,600), and Romania (4,500). In Vienna, 25 thousand Hungarians live, while their number was only 23 thousand in 2019.
On a national level, the most numerous foreign group in Austria are the Germans (265 thousand). They are followed by those born in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Türkiye, Romania, and Serbia.

Why would they stay when they can live in a wealthier country with cheaper food and fuel? We are quickly de-evolving into the communist block country that we were in 1989.

So, a few thousand more, out of a country of ten million. Hardly newsworthy.
Yawn.

Sawdust HEAD again from Steiner Michael.
Fidesz – the DOWNFALL weight of it – Unstoppable.
Steiner, it’s not a few thousand more, it’s a 15 thousand increase since only 2019. Why are numbers increasing when life in Hungary is supposedly getting better all the time? Austria is a small country with a population smaller than Hungary, therefore these numbers are significant. Looking at stats to do with Austria it’s also very important to recognise that these are only people that actually live in Austria, there is a huge group of people that live in Hungary but commute to jobs in Austria. Historically they chose to live in Hungary due to it being the cheaper option, in fact some people migrated from poorer regions of Hungary to the western border to take advantage of exactly this opportunity, but many will move over the border due to the rising costs in Hungary making it effectively pointless. There’s no point saving a mere 20% on living costs if you end up spending most of that on commuting to your job, so we can expect leavers to increase dramatically in the years ahead for this reason alone. Hungary has in fact uniquely discouraged the status quo by forbidding home office for cross border commuters, forcing them to attend their place of work at least 4 times a week which will only encourage departures.
