MÁV announces major renovation: Train timetables to be changed

MÁV launches a major track renewal project in Rákosrendező from 21 June to 27 July, bringing significant changes to rail services on key lines.
MÁV’s renovation project starts soon
As Portfolio reports, from 21 June to 27 July, MÁV will commence major track renewal works in the Rákosrendező area, affecting rail traffic on the Esztergom, Szombathely, and Veresegyháza lines. This intensive infrastructure project will necessitate a full suspension of train services between Nyugati station and Rákospalota-Újpest, as well as between Nyugati and Angyalföld on the Esztergom line. With crews and machinery operating around the clock, the works aim to modernise and enhance the reliability of the lines, particularly for commuters from the northern suburbs of Budapest.

The renovation, led by MÁV Pályaműködtetési Ltd., involves over 180 professionals and a budget of approximately HUF 3 billion (EUR 7.4 million) from MÁV’s resources. According to VG, the project involves rebuilding more than 1.5 kilometres of track, replacing rails, sleepers, and overhead lines, and laying 700 metres of new ballast. Once completed, the upgraded section will allow trains to run at speeds of up to 80 km/h, eliminating previous speed restrictions and significantly reducing delays. This technical overhaul is a key step towards improving service punctuality and passenger satisfaction.
Alternative public transport options
To mitigate the disruption during the closure, the Hungarian State Railways has coordinated with Volánbusz and BKK to offer alternative public transport options. Intercity bus services will be more frequent, and additional capacity will be added to key Budapest routes, including trams 12 and 14 and the M3 metro line. For some international services, buses will replace trains, and others will be rerouted via Szob to Keleti station. MÁV encourages passengers to check their website for updated timetables and travel advice, expected to be released in early June.

More efficient rail service
The timing of the works has been carefully planned to coincide with the summer holidays, when passenger traffic traditionally decreases. This strategic scheduling ensures that the impact of service suspensions and altered routes is minimised. Ultimately, these improvements will offer a more dependable and efficient rail service for thousands of daily passengers across the affected lines.
