Multiplexes may keep most malls open Sundays
Budapest, February 13 (MTI) – Although legislation enforced from March will keep most big retailers closed on Sundays, malls with multiplexes are likely to remain open, business daily Napi Gazdasag said on Friday.
Judit Balatoni, chief secretary of the Hungarian Shopping Centre Association (MBSZ), told the paper that only malls without cinemas, of which there are few in Hungary, are expected to close on Sundays. The new rules allow for exceptions to be made by government decree based on particularities of specific shopping centres, such as their role in the local tourism industry, she said, adding that they would request permission for shops in malls with cinemas to remain open on Sunday.
Malls will stay open longer during the week to counter the effect of the new business hour rules, Balatoni said. Sales are expected to edge down when the new rules take effect, but the association believes demand will not change in the long term, she added.
