National, Budapest heat records broken

HungaroMet said on its website on Monday that the temperature reached 39.9 degrees Celsius in Körösladány, southeast Hungary, on Sunday, nearly 1 degree up from the previous national record registered in 1948. The early morning temperature was 25.5°C on János Hill in Budapest on Sunday, breaking the previous record of 24.2°C recorded in Lágymányos in Budapest in 2017.

On Sunday afternoon in Budapest the temperature reached 38.7°C at the Újpest monitoring station, breaking the previous record of 37.9°C recorded at the Országút station in 1948.

Heatwave remains in Hungary

The heat will continue throughout this week, and according to forecasts, we are facing the hottest week of the summer so far. Today, strong winds may still blow in several places, and in some areas, temperatures might even remain below 30 degrees Celsius. However, in the coming days, this will give way to another intense heatwave.

No precipitation is expected until the weekend, and the mercury will steadily climb. On Monday, it could reach 33°C, on Tuesday 34°C, Wednesday 36°C, Thursday 38°C, and on Friday an impressive 39°C. These readings are in the shade; in crowded cities and on paved surfaces, the perceived temperature will be significantly higher, especially when there is no breeze. Showers and thunderstorms are only expected on Saturday, accompanied by increasing wind. Nevertheless, temperatures will remain high, dropping by just one degree by Sunday.

At dawn, temperatures will still cool down to between 10 and 17°C at the start of the week, but by week’s end, the minimums will be warmer, ranging from 14 to 19°C.
