The National Football Team met the Dalai Lama and defeated Latvia
The members of the Hungarian national football team got the chance to meet the Dalai Lama before their World Cup qualification match against Latvia. Mno.hu writes that the Dalai Lama also happened to be in Riga, and the Hungarian team gifted him with a national jersey.
The Buddhist leader could give them some spiritual power, which the Hungarian team needed very much. This was our third and key match in the qualification round, because the boys tied against Faroe Islands and lost against Switzerland.

Who knows if it was this spiritual power or something else that boosted the Hungarian team so much that they defeated Latvia by 2:0. It was the day and match of the Ádám-s, as the two goals were scored by Ádám Gyurcsó (’10) and Ádám Szalai (’77).

Even though the Latvians also had their chances to score a goal, the Hungarian national team seemed to be much more assertive and fulfilled the hopes of many fans. Now that the team had their first win, this hopefully exhilarated them so they will be able to play similarly against Andorra on the 13th of November.
“I’m happy that we were able to win. This was a very important match for us. There was a lot of pressure on us but the team handled it well. We tried to dominate the match from the first moment, but we could’ve lived with more of our chances. We were lucky in some situations and Péter Gulácsi’s goalkeeping worked out very well. All in all, I am satisfied. Now comes a little break, then the match against Andorra where we must win, and then the winter break. It was important that we demonstrated that we can play football, and we also have a great, unified team. We also tried some young players, because they are the future of Hungarian football” said Coach Bernd Storck.
