Hungary’s flag was hoisted and lowered to half-mast in front of Parliament on Thursday morning, in commemoration of the 65th anniversary of the defeat of the 1956 uprising against Soviet rule.
The flag was lowered in a military ceremony, with army chief Major General Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi attending. A black flag and a Hungarian flag with a hole in its middle, emblematic of the revolution when demmonstrators removed the Soviet-inspired coat of arms from it, is also flown from Parliament today.

Commemorations will be held throughout the day in plot 301 of the public cemetery in Rákoskeresztúr where the revolutionaries were buried.
Events will conclude with a concert in the St Stephen Basilica in the evening.

Martyrs – those that fell on that day and ALL – who for – Freedom, Liberty and the Retainment of Sovereignty for Hungary – may they NEVER be Forgotten.
I lived those terrible days.
I never dreamed that I see the day, when a free and independent Hungary honors the patriots who rose-up against the Soviets and their “Hungarian” communist puppets.
They were terrible times for Hungarian patriots. The lucky ones escaped to the West but many stayed and suffered the most brutal retaliation of Hungarian history. Torture, murder, prison and hopeless live was the fate of Hungarian patriots.
The descendants of those monsters that invited the Soviets tanks against us are leading the opposition and want to make Hungary subject of EU despots. They will not succeed.
This government has my confidence and my vote. Not the treasonous opposition.
