Netherlands backs Sahara autonomy plan, deepens Morocco ties

    Netherlands endorses Sahara autonomy plan, strengthens ties with Morocco

    The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Mr. Tom Berendsen, speaking at a press briefing held Tuesday in Rabat following his meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Abroad, Mr. Nasser Bourita, stated that “the Netherlands considers that genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the most feasible solution” to the dispute over the Sahara.

    This position was also set forth in a joint communiqué issued following talks between Mr. Bourita and Mr. Berendsen, who was on a working visit to Morocco on April 7 and 8.

    Mr. Berendsen reaffirmed the Netherlands’ support for United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, as well as for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, Mr. Staffan de Mistura to “facilitate and conduct negotiations based on the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco, with a view to reaching a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution.”

    Furthermore, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of the Netherlands stated, according to the joint communiqué, that “the Netherlands will act in accordance with its position, including at the diplomatic and economic levels, in compliance with the international law”.

    Tom Berendsen expressed his country’s deep gratitude for the vital role Morocco plays in promoting regional and international stability, peace, and security, praising the role played by his Majesty King Mohammed VI.

    The Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs also commended the progress made by Morocco under the leadership of King Mohammed VI and highlighted the strength and solidity of relations between the two countries.
