Budapest bathing spots: new Danube locations proposed

Change language:

The capital has once again placed the expansion of Danube bathing sites on its agenda, but past experience urges caution. Although several new locations have been proposed, implementation remains subject to a number of conditions.

Renewed momentum after unmet promises

In recent years, the leadership of Budapest has repeatedly emphasised the need to better integrate the urban stretch of the Danube into public life. The aim has been to enable safe bathing at multiple points along the river.

However, earlier plans were only partially realised: in the summer of 2025, just one new open-water bathing site opened at Árasztó-part. Significant delays in the permitting process highlighted the complexity of the project.

Complex approvals and uncertain costs

One of the main challenges lies in meeting administrative and professional requirements. According to Budapest Spas cPlc and the Valyo – City and River Association, each proposed location must undergo detailed assessment.

Water quality, current strength, riverbed conditions and safety considerations all determine whether a given stretch is suitable for open-water swimming. In addition, investment and maintenance costs can only be accurately estimated once detailed plans are in place, which further slows progress.

Several potential locations under review

Current plans suggest that the Árasztó-part bathing site could reopen this year, with the designated swimming area possibly expanded, according to Világgazdaság.

In the longer term, several additional sites are being examined:

  • the Margitsziget area
  • the central Jane Haining embankment
  • the surroundings of Óbudai-sziget
  • as well as sections of the Danube in the northern districts

There are also proposals to create designated swimming lanes, allowing the river to be used under controlled and safer conditions.

Floating baths as a longer-term ambition

Plans also include reviving traditional floating bath structures, known as timber bathing facilities. Potential locations include iconic sites such as near the Parliament building and the Várkert Bazár.

Preparatory work is already underway, with feasibility studies assessing technical, environmental and economic conditions.

Gradual expansion seen as the realistic path

According to sector experts, the short-term focus is likely to remain on stabilising existing sites and implementing modest expansions. The longer-term goal is to develop a system that would allow multiple sections of the Danube to be safely used for bathing.

While the plans are ambitious, the pace of implementation will continue to depend on regulatory and financial conditions, as noted by Valyo.
