New paid parking zones in Budapest and expanded toll roads in Hungary

Budapest and Hungary as a whole are introducing significant changes to their transportation infrastructure, impacting both local residents and travellers. These updates include new paid parking zones in Budapest and the addition of toll roads across the country.
New paid parking zones in Budapest
Starting 9 April 2025, several new streets in Budapest will require payment for parking. The initiative aims to make it easier for residents to find parking spaces near their homes. The fee is set at HUF 300 per hour (EUR 0.75) and will apply on weekdays between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM. A grace period is in effect until 9 April, during which violators will only receive warnings instead of fines.
According to ZugloiParkolas.hu, the newly designated paid parking zones include:
- Beckó Street
- Benkő Street (specific segments: 17–43, 26–52)
- Bosnyák köz

New toll roads across Hungary
In addition to the parking changes in Budapest, Hungary is expanding its network of toll roads. This development means that more motorways and main roads will require payment for use, most likely starting from the first half of May 2025, 444.hu reports.
According to Blikk, the annex to the regulation lists in detail the expressways and main roads for which heavy goods vehicles will have to pay tolls, as well as the motorways and expressways that will be subject to vignette requirements.
The new toll road sections include the entire section of the M44 between Kecskemét and Békéscsaba and the section of the M85 from Sopron to the border. In addition, certain sections of the main roads 5, 53 and 54, which were previously free of charge, and road 103 in the Zsámbék basin will become toll roads for heavy goods vehicles.
These changes are expected to impact both domestic drivers and international travelers passing through Hungary. Motorists should stay informed about toll requirements to avoid unexpected charges.
Commercial vehicle road toll revenue reaches HUF 656 billion in 2024
Tolls on commercial vehicles generated revenue of more than HUF 656 billion (EUR 1.6 billion) in 2024, toll system operator NÚSZ said on Wednesday.
