Ryanair’s flight from Birmingham landed with a brake calliper malfunction
According to Tudásmorzsák a repülésrÅ‘l (Knowledge nuggets on aviation), a social media site, a Ryanair flight from Birmingham landed in Budapest with a brake calliper malfunction yesterday around noon. The plane’s pilot interrupted the approach to the airport twice, then waited for a short while in the airspace of Tápiósáp to perform the compulsory checklists.
During the third approach, due to the partially closed brake callipers, the plane reached a speed 55 km/h higher than normal, but the pilot managed to land safely. Afterwards, it taxied to its parking place, accompanied by firefighters.
Brake callipers must function simultaneously; otherwise, independent operation could result in the irreversible tilt of the aircraft. Due to the increased speed, the aircraft must brake more firmly, and the brakes may overheat. Therefore, checking the temperature of the brakes is compulsory. According to the social media site, the manoeuvre was not dangerous for a Boeing 737 aircraft since Budapest Airport has long enough runways.

However, in the case of a Boeing 747 with maximum load and with inoperable brake callipers, such a landing could result in brake overheating and the start of a fire. Therefore, the presence of firefighters is a compulsory safety measure.
