On Saturday morning, the thermometers showed -35.5 °C (-31.9 F) in a ponor in the Bükk mountains. It has never been this cold in Hungary.
According to the Met Hír, the official record low temperature in Hungary was -35.0 °C until yesterday (Miskolc-Görömbölytapolca, February 16, 1940). However, the Hungarian Meteorological Service did not calibrate the instrument they used. According to the MET, it could happen even before that the temperature was lower than this. They added that they have been conducting measures in this ponor having a peculiar microclimate since 2009.
