Budapest central Christmas market has been cancelled
The Vörösmarty Square Christmas market is probably the most famous holiday event in Budapest. However, this year’s market will turn out very differently. The municipal government of Budapest will not be the organiser of the event. The Budapest Brand nonprofit ltd., the company which organised last year’s market, and the municipal government of the fifth district could not agree on the terms of holding the event.
The whole hurdle started when the government decided that the fifth district should receive the trusteeship right of Vörömarty Square. This caught the district’s municipal government by surprise and because of this, they sought help from the organisers of the previous events. Organising such an event takes months of preparations. So, the district could not do it by itself, at least not this year’s event.
It is true that there are political discrepancies between the capital’s and the district’s municipality, but it is not the reason behind the disagreement. Napi.hu reported that the municipality and Budapest Brand had consulted fairly multiple times, but the negotiations still failed. Budapest Brand could have only undertaken the task of organisation if they could sign a 2-year contract.
No Christmas market this year
Although at the negotiation table both parties aimed to reach a co-beneficial agreement, it did not occur. The negotiations still went on trying to reach an agreement. At last, the Budapest Brand nonprofit ltd. was not commissioned with the organisation of the event. However, based on the latest update on the story, it turned out that Budapest will not hold a Christmas market this year. There is no time for the preparations of the event — said Csaba Faix, the manager of Budapest Brand.
Sadly, the abrupt variations in the public spaces of Budapest and the failed negotiations ultimately led to the market’s failure. Budapest Brand has been the organiser of these events for the past 20 years. The municipality of the fifth district did not respond to the company’s inquiries until September, which were sent in July — told Csaba Faix to ATV.hu. The fifth district decided that they would try to come up with a plan with an entrepreneur instead of the nonprofit organisation. Even if there will be a market somehow, it definitely will not be the same as it was before.

Hungary – we are IMPLODING.
This is a huge blunder. The Christmas markets are why tourists come to Budapest at Christmastime.
Just like the BLUNDER – not being able to reach agreement over our Public Ferry Services.
This inability of Hungarian officialdom – individuals putting aside HUGH ego’s and – THINKING of Budapest, Hungary – when will we EVER learn.
Christmas Market – Public Ferry Services, then we see the ‘Over the Top” expenditure on National Day- come back to the word – PRIORITIZATION – which continues to “stand out” in District Councils and of course this present IMPLODING Government of Hungary – being completely MISUNDERSTOOD.
Likened to MANY, we travel from Budapest District V – to Vienna every year or two, visiting & admiring – their Christmas Market.
We live – our house is 5 minutes’ walk from Vorosmarty ter.
Its transformation, over the past 20 years exampled – has seen it what it is to-day, not just for Budapesterins – nor Hungarians, but people from the Global world to admire – its DELIGHTS and Beauty.
We know of its HISTORY.
WHAT we LOVE about our Vorosmarty ter Christmas Market – is the Angelic SMILES of Joy & Excitement – on the FACES of the “Little Ones” – that “Flood” with their Parents or Grand-Parents – from not just the Districts of Budapest but Hungary and Europe even Globally.
Globally – our Vorosmarty Square Christmas Market – has been GROWING in reputation, and been Rightfully promoted as another reason to visit our Nation’s Capital City – Budapest – at Christmas time.
Christmas – factually it’s for the “little ones.” – besides the RIGHTFUL celebration of Christ Jesus birth.
Bureaucracy – driven by, at the end of the day – WHO – is going to COLLECT – the BIGGEST amounts of – Forints.
Greed & Exploitation – of PEOPLE – rampant in Hungary in these Cataclysmic times that We ALL live.
Government and District Councils – fellow Hungarians especially those who are BLANTANTLY exploiting and exercising GREED – to SHARE the PAIN.
Veiled – in the explanation given by authority – another example of the disrespect to Candour or Honesty with and to People – as to WHY there will be no Vorosmarty ter Christmas Market this year – is Greed.
Is this true? Oh my gosh, I was just going to book to come and see the Christmas markets! There is no where else online to tell you it has been cancelled! Is this really true?
OMG NO Christmas market in Budapest.
My sister and I have an annual break together every year exploring capital cities Christmas markets for the last 9 years.
