PM Orbán: Government declares Antifa a terrorist organisation – here is what experts say

The government decided on Wednesday to classify Antifa as a terrorist organisation, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said on Friday during an interview on Kossuth Radio’s Good Morning, Hungary! program.

The Prime Minister explained that a national list will be established to register terrorist organisations, and the government will take the strictest measures against them. He stated that the government must lead by example, ensuring that unlawful actions and publicly announced illegal intentions do not go without legal consequences and retaliation.

Orbán also spoke about deteriorating conditions in Europe, noting that life is worsening, things are becoming unstable, and the world around us is increasingly changing—against our will—creating aggression that also manifests in politics. He emphasised that politicians have a responsibility to prevent this tense, aggressive, and violent atmosphere, stemming from the general state of the continent, from entering or influencing public debates.

He pointed out that slowly, only Central Europe—and within it, especially Hungary—can be considered an “island of peace and security.” The government must lead and make it clear that Hungary wants to remain a peaceful and safe country.

Is Antifa an organisation?

While the Hungarian government now classifies Antifa as a terrorist organisation, experts often stress that “Antifa” is not a formal, centralised organisation. The term is generally used as shorthand to describe a loose, decentralised movement of individuals and groups who identify with anti-fascist politics. There is no official membership, leadership, or unified structure: rather, local collectives and activists may use the label to signal alignment with anti-fascist ideology.

Because of this lack of formal organisation, there is ongoing debate internationally over whether Antifa can legally be designated as a terrorist group. Critics of such classifications argue that the label conflates disparate activist activities under one umbrella, potentially criminalising loosely affiliated individuals rather than a coordinated entity. Supporters of the designation, however, contend that groups operating under the Antifa banner have engaged in, or promoted, violent acts in the past, justifying stricter legal measures.

  1. Just use the full phrase “Anti-Fascist” rather that “Antifa”. The government will then have to ban anti-fascism and justify itself as being fascist.

    • Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

And “blue gum” is rubber that is blue in color.

They can call themselves whatever they want. They are a bunch of violent, murderous thugs who need to be removed from the civilized society.

  2. It appeared that Steiner, who has called for violence many times in this very website, should be removed from society by his own admission. What do you call ICE in the U.S.? Answer: lawless thugs terrorizing people. What do you call laws banning organized protests? Lawless thugs. What do you call commenters that often call for “removal” and other nasty solutions: thugs.
