Orbán’s new armoured BMW fleet: two luxury cars worth over EUR 1.2 million

It has now emerged that the Hungarian state acquired not one but two identical armoured luxury BMWs—both of which appear to be in use by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s security entourage. The vehicles were officially registered on the same day in November 2024, and together, their value likely exceeds half a billion forints (over EUR 1.2 million).

Appearance in France prompts investigation

The story first gained attention in March, when a video circulated online showing Prime Minister Orbán arriving at the Élysée Palace in Paris. He was seen entering the French presidential courtyard in an elegant, Hungarian-plated luxury sedan.

Hungarian outlet Gulyáságyú Média investigated the license plate and identified the vehicle as a BMW 760i xDrive Protection G7L, an armoured limousine built for high-level security. Through Hungary’s public vehicle registry system, they confirmed that the car had been registered in late 2023, with a 4.4-litre engine producing over 500 horsepower and equipped with a full suite of protective features, including armour plating and emergency lights.

This specific model has a long wheelbase and is a hybrid, combining petrol and electric drive. It includes an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. Its spacious interior only seats four people—two in the rear—designed for maximum comfort and discretion.

Nearly identical vehicles registered on the same day

New findings published by Kontroll have uncovered the existence of a second, nearly identical armoured BMW, also bearing Hungarian plates. A photo shared on Reddit showed a vehicle matching the first in every detail—except for a different license plate.

Using Hungary’s Vehicle Service Platform, Kontroll looked up both license plates and discovered that two BMW 760i xDrive Protection G7L vehicles were registered on November 13, 2024. The technical inspections had taken place two days earlier, within one hour of each other, at Budapest’s Mozaik Street testing station. One vehicle had 46 kilometres on the odometer, the other 98. Even the upholstery colour was the same.

One of the inspection photos revealed a folder labelled “BMW 760i TEK” inside the passenger seat, suggesting that the cars may be operated by Hungary’s Counter Terrorism Centre (TEK), the agency tasked with protecting the Prime Minister.

The cost and exclusivity of high-security transport

According to Telex, such vehicles are extremely rare in Europe, with only a handful in operation. On Germany’s largest car marketplace, mobile.de, only two BMW 7 Protection models of similar configuration were listed—each priced at around EUR 678,000 (approx. HUF 270 million).

These vehicles are not sold through regular dealerships and must be custom-ordered directly from BMW, making them inaccessible to the general public.

Questions with no answers—so far

Neither the Hungarian government, the Prime Minister’s Office, nor TEK have commented on the purchase. Multiple outlets, including Gulyáságyú Média, Telex, and Kontroll, have submitted inquiries but received no response.

Kontroll has now submitted a new set of written questions to TEK, asking whether the armoured vehicles were purchased outright, leased long-term, or rented temporarily. The outlet has stated that the article will be updated if an official response is received.

For privacy reasons, the exact license plates of the vehicles have not been published, but all technical documentation has been obtained and verified by Kontroll’s editorial team.

Why two identical vehicles?

Experts note that it’s not uncommon for high-value individuals to maintain two identical armoured vehicles. One may serve as a backup or parts donor in case of mechanical failure, while the other could be deployed for international trips or remain on standby for security reasons.

Vehicle registry records suggest that Orbán’s armoured fleet consists only of these two BMWs, as other nearby plate numbers (such as the 556 and 559 series) are assigned to unrelated, older cars.
