Showers and thunderstorms are expected across much of the country on Monday, with a cooling cold front arriving on Tuesday, according to the HungaroMet’s weather forecast. By early Wednesday, ground frosts are set to return, and daytime highs will remain below 20C nationwide. From Thursday, a gradual warming trend will begin, though after a brief lull, the likelihood of precipitation will rise again over the weekend, according to the latest forecast from HungaroMet, released to MTI on Sunday.
A cold snap in Hungary
On Monday, cumulus cloud will build markedly, though spells of sunshine are also likely. Showers are expected to develop in multiple waves across an increasing area, with thunderstorms becoming more probable from midday onwards. In the southern and eastern regions, intense, potentially severe storms may occur. South-westerly winds will strengthen over large areas, with storm-related gusts reaching gale force in places. Daytime temperatures will generally range between 20C and 26C.

By Tuesday night, cloud cover will thicken considerably, before gradually breaking from the west during the day. Showers, thunderstorms and rain are likely in many areas, with the focus of precipitation shifting east of the Danube from the afternoon and evening, easing there by morning. Winds will turn north-westerly and strengthen widely, with occasional gale-force gusts, particularly in the north-western Transdanubian region. Temperatures will range from 9C to 14C at dawn and between 12C and 22C during the day, with warmer conditions persisting across the Great Plain, while cooling sets in earlier in western regions.
On Wednesday, several hours of sunshine are expected alongside high and cumulus cloud, although cloud will be more persistent along a convergence zone stretching from the Bükk region to Békéscsaba, where isolated showers may develop. Elsewhere, precipitation is unlikely. North-westerly to westerly winds will be brisk only in isolated areas. Overnight temperatures will fall to between 1C and 9C, with localised frost possible in western Transdanubia. Afternoon highs will reach between 16C and 19C.
Thursday will bring a mix of sunshine and passing high and cumulus cloud, with only the slight chance of an isolated light shower. Southerly winds will remain mostly moderate. Temperatures will range from 2C to 9C at dawn and between 19C and 23C in the afternoon.
Cool weather to remain
On Friday, strong cumulus development will accompany high cloud, but several hours of sunshine are still expected. There is a chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms, chiefly in Transdanubia. South-easterly winds will be fresh, at times strong. Temperatures will range from 3C to 10C at dawn and 21C to 25C by afternoon.
By Saturday, cloud will increase significantly from the south and south-west, bringing a growing likelihood of rain, showers and thunderstorms across many areas. South-easterly to easterly winds will be brisk and occasionally strong. Temperatures will range from 5C to 12C at dawn and between 17C and 24C in the afternoon.
On Sunday, cloud will begin to break and thin, allowing sunshine to return to many areas. Showers will remain possible in several places, with isolated thunderstorms, before precipitation gradually subsides. North-westerly to northerly winds will strengthen across much of the country. Temperatures are expected to range between 9C and 14C at dawn, rising to between 18C and 24C during the day.
