A bus carrying the aerobics division of the Pécs Sports School was involved in a serious accident on Saturday morning on Route 6 between Pécs and Hird. The athletes had been travelling by hired bus to Budapest, where they were due to compete in the second round of the Hungarian Cup at the Folyondár Street sports hall, PSN Ltd – Pécsi Sportiskola told the Hungarian news agency MTI. The Mayor of Pécs has said the city will provide all possible assistance to those affected.
Pécs Sports School students and coaches suffered terrible accident
There were 28 people on board the vehicle: 19 competitors, three coaches, six parents, and the driver. The coach left the road near Hird under circumstances that remain unclear and collided with a tree. The driver died at the scene. The community of PSN Ltd – Pécsi Sportiskola has expressed its sincere condolences to the driver’s family and loved ones, the Hungarian News Agency wrote.
According to the sports school, all passengers were taken to hospital by emergency services; the children are being treated at the paediatric clinic, while the adults are receiving care in the emergency department of the 400-bed clinic. Among the injured is one competitor who sustained a fractured femur, while several others suffered broken fingers, concussion, bruising and abrasions.
Two coaches were also seriously injured, and their condition is being closely monitored. The leadership of PSN Ltd said it remains in continuous contact with the affected families, healthcare institutions and the authorities. In light of the accident, the aerobics team will not take part in this weekend’s Hungarian Cup competition.
Mayor offers help
Attila Péterffy, Mayor of Pécs, expressed his heartfelt condolences on Facebook on behalf of the city’s community to the family and loved ones of the deceased driver, as well as to all those deeply affected by the tragedy. “Our thoughts are with the injured children, their families, their coaches and the entire sporting community,” he said, adding that the city of Pécs is hopeful for the injured to make a full and swift recovery. He also thanked all those involved in the rescue, medical care and assistance.
“At this moment, the priority is to support those affected, to ensure calm for the families, and to aid the recovery of the children. The city of Pécs will provide every assistance at its disposal to those in need,” he said.
