PHOTOS: Tens of thousands of Hungarians get futuristic international airport
The international airport’s infrastructure needs development, and the county council will invest almost 80 million euros in the project. Among others, they will build a brand new passenger terminal and share the first visuals of it. Two contracts concerning the renewal and expansion of the International Airport of Szatmárnémeti (Satu Mare) were signed on the 10 and 13 of February. Szatmárnémeti is a city of 101 thousand of inhabitants in West Romania, just a dozen kilometres from the Romanian-Hungarian border. The city has 45 thousand Hungarian citizens, and thousands live in the suburbs, too. Most of them obtain Hungarian citizenship since Romania does not oppose double citizenship.
New international airport on the horizon
According to the official website of the Satu Mare County Council, they will build an 8-kilometre-long service road. Moreover, they will purchase modern equipment to help the security check process, and acquire a fire engine and an ambulance car.
The contract is part of a large-scale development project concerning the renewal and expansion of the city’s international airport. Csaba Pataki, chairman of the county council, said it was a historic opportunity to develop their infrastructure. They aim to make Szatmárnémeti and the county more attractive to foreign tourists and other visitors.
Thanks to the investment, they hope the number of flights from and to the city will increase since the airport’s capacity will double. The new terminal will be for departures, while the existing one will serve the arrivals, Mihai Pătrașcu, the airport’s director, added. As a result, more airlines could come to the city and travelling from there will be much more comfortable.
