Police arrest Romanian man sought by Germany for murder
Budapest, May 17 (MTI) – Hungarian police have arrested a Romanian man who was sought under a European arrest warrant by the German authorities for murder, the National Police Headquarters told MTI on Wednesday.
German police turned to their Hungarian counterparts in December 2016 with a request for assistance in uncovering the whereabouts of a murder suspect. According to the charges, the 24-year-old man was part of a gang that broke into the home of an 86-year-old woman and brutally assaulted her before forcing her to hand over valuables. The gang is thought to have left her in a critical condition, and she died later from her injuries.
The other gang members were arrested by German police but the Romanian suspect escaped. During an investigation, it was determined that he had travelled between Germany and Romania, via Austria and Hungary.
Police caught the man in the village of Alsónémedi, in Pest County, and he will be held in detention until a decision is made on handing him over to the German authorities.
