Political Network for Values urges changes to defend the values of family, life and freedom

The Political Network for Values, holding its 6th Transatlantic Summit in Madrid, has urged the protection of the values of family, life and freedom.

After the summit attended by more than 200 participants from 45 countries on Monday, the organisation issued a statement offering its cooperation to governments in promoting “the right to life from the time of conception to natural death” and political and legislative initiatives for ensuring a favourable environment for families.

“We must work to enforce the interests of our political community,” Fidesz MEP Kinga Gál said at a panel discussion on the challenges of freedom in democracies.

She said basic values were under threat and must be defended “in a world where we have many enemies” and where “desperate attempts are being made to silence us”.

Gál cited US President-elect Donald Trump and Italian Liga leader Matteo Salvini as saying that

“if they cannot defeat us in a democratic election, then they try it in court”.

She said their political community, however, was strong enough to bring common sense back to European politics.

Márton Ugrósdy, a deputy state secretary of the Prime Minister’s Cabinet Office, told MTI before addressing the section on family policy that birth rates had dropped sharply in most developed countries, putting into question the sustainability of existing systems.

“We believe that the family continues to be the basic building block of humanity and we want to achieve as much support for families as possible,”

The conference was also organised by Hungary’s Center for Fundamental Rights and the Foundation for a Civic Hungary, in addition to several international organisations.
