Magyar Hírlap reports that among foreign students, the University of Debrecen is the most popular institution. Most of the international students are studying medicine in the one-tier program, but veterinary training is also popular. Last fall, almost 29 thousand foreign students enrolled in Hungarian universities.

The Hungarian Department of Education (Oktatási Hivatal) shared some data with Magyar Hírlap regarding the number of foreign students pursuing a degree in Hungary. In the past five years, the number of these students has grown by 8 thousand. In the 2012/13 academic year 20694 students applied, while next year over 23 thousand students, and in 2015, 26 thousand foreign students were enrolled, with

28628 international students accepted last year.

The Department of Education defines foreign or international students as individuals who are not Hungarian citizens, or who have dual citizenship, one of them being Hungarian, but were born outside Hungary. If a student is enrolled in more than one program at one university, then they appear only once in the statistics, but if they study at different institutions, then they appear in the statistics and numbers of each university that they study at.

According to the data gathered, the most popular Hungarian university is the University of Debrecen, where in the 2016/17 Fall semester, 4321 students registered. Then follows the Semmelweis University with 3470 students, then the University of Szeged with 3208 students and then the University of Pécs with 3200 students. Foreign students are represented in the smallest numbers at the Budapest University of Jewish Studies, at the Pető András College and at the Bhaktivedanta College of Theology.

At each of these last mentioned institutions, three foreign students study.

In the fall semester of the 2016/17 academic year, medicine was the most popular, with 6406 students registered in the whole country. Dentistry comes second, which was chosen by 1240 foreign students. The University of Veterinary Medicine was the choice of almost one thousand foreign students. 737 students applied for the business administration and management program, and 631 students for the nursing and patient care and physiotherapy program.
