Portuguese fugitive behind Football Leaks arrested in Budapest
A Portuguese fugitive wanted under a European arrest warrant has been arrested in Budapest, the police headquarters said on its website on Thursday.
Citing Portuguese press reports, news portal Index said the 30-year-old man had been wanted in connection with the publication of confidential documents stolen from top Portuguese soccer club SL Benfica.
Portuguese media say the man is the owner of the “Football Leaks” website, which has published emails, contracts and other documents relating to several soccer organisations, including the rape allegations levelled against Cristiano Ronaldo.
The suspect was arrested on Wednesday in Budapest’s 7th district, police said, adding that his extradition to Portugal was under way.
The Portuguese authorities have said Hungary is expected to extradite the suspect in three-four weeks. He is believed to have moved to Budapest as an international student with a scholarship several years ago.
