Putin-US envoy talks bring “relief” to Central Europe, says Hungarian FM

Wednesday’s talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US special envoy Steve Witkoff represent good news for everyone, especially for Central Europe, the foreign minister said on Facebook.

Péter Szijjártó said on Thursday that all eyes had been on Moscow on the previous day, and “reports published about the Putin-Witkoff meeting brought relief to everyone, especially to us in central Europe, in the neighbourhood of the war”.

“Over here we know full well that the world becomes a safer place if there is high-level dialogue between the US and Russia,” Szijjártó said. “That’s why we made every effort in the past three and a half years — despite the lowliest attacks abroad and at home — to keep the channels of communication open, and that’s why we welcome every opportunity when the leaders of the US and Russia talk to each other”.

“It has become clear to everyone over the last three and a half years that the war in Ukraine won’t end on the battlefield but at the negotiating table, and only if the Americans and the Russians are able to agree with each other,” he said.

“This morning I talked with several participants of yesterday’s talks by phone and they confirmed the positive press reports. We hope that Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin will soon meet in person and it will bring back peace to central Europe,” he added.
