QS Ranking: ELTE takes the lead in Hungary
This year, the Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) improved by about 140 places compared to last year’s result, reaching the 564th position in the Quacquarelli Symonds world ranking, thus securing the top spot among Hungarian higher education institutions.
On June 4th, the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) university ranking for 2025 was published, examining 5663 higher education institutions from 106 countries, nearly twice as many as the previous year. Ultimately, 1503 institutions made it onto the 21st QS WUR list, including 11 from Hungary.
ELTE takes the lead in Hungary
The Eötvös Loránd University improved by about 140 places compared to last year, reaching the 564th position, surpassing the University of Szeged, ranked 570th, and the University of Debrecen, ranked 574th. All three leading Hungarian universities improved their positions from last year, placing them in the 564-574 ranking range. After previously holding third place, ELTE has now taken the lead among Hungarian higher education institutions.
The editors of the ranking evaluate universities based on several criteria, including academic reputation, an indicator measuring the employment prospects of graduates, and sustainability, where ELTE ranks first in Hungary. In terms of employer satisfaction and international research collaborations, ELTE is also among the top three in Hungary.
In addition to the above, other Hungarian universities featured in the ranking include the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (721-730), the University of Pécs (771-780), Corvinus University (1001-1200), MATE (1001-1200), Széchenyi István University (1001-1200), University of Miskolc (1201-1400), University of Pannonia (1201-1400), and Óbuda University (1201-1400).
This year’s list is topped by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), followed by Imperial College London and Oxford. The top ten include four American, four British, one Swiss, and one Singaporean university.
