Quiet Hungarian village rocked by brutal killing: Man found dead in his own home

A man has been killed in the village of Szegvár, in southern Hungary’s Csongrád-Csanád County. Police launched a criminal investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

According to information published by the county police headquarters, officers were alerted early on Saturday morning, 3 January, by a 35-year-old local man who reported finding an acquaintance dead inside a flat. A forensic inspection at the scene established that the victim did not die of natural causes and that his death was the result of violence.

Authorities have confirmed that the case is being investigated as a homicide within the framework of criminal proceedings, MTI reported. No official details have yet been released regarding suspects, arrests, or the precise cause of death.

The victim was physically disabled

Local media, Délmagyar, among others, have since reported further details about the victim and the events leading up to the killing. The man who died was born in 1991 and was known to be physically disabled. Residents of Szegvár describe the area where the crime occurred as a quiet street, which makes the incident all the more shocking for the small community.

Unofficial information circulating in the village suggests that the victim had hosted two friends at his home on Friday evening, shortly before his death. Reports indicate that the men had been drinking together. One of the guests is said to have a criminal past, having previously served a prison sentence for grievous bodily harm, while the other reportedly moved to Szegvár from the Budapest metropolitan area.

Foul play is clear

Police have not confirmed these details and have urged caution regarding speculation. What is known officially is that the investigation began following the Saturday morning report, and that forensic findings clearly pointed to foul play. Officers carried out a thorough examination of the scene, which was later documented by local press after the police inspection had concluded.

At this stage, the Csongrád-Csanád County Police Headquarters has not released further information, citing the ongoing investigation. Updates are expected once authorities are able to clarify the sequence of events and determine responsibility for the man’s death.
