Record Russian strike hits government building in Kyiv, kills mother and newborn – PHOTOS, VIDEO

At least two people were killed and dozens injured in a massive overnight Russian attack on Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv, local authorities reported on Sunday, 7 September. The unprecedented assault marks the largest combined drone and missile strike since Russia’s full-scale invasion began on 24 February 2022.
Ukrainian military sources confirmed that Russian forces launched 810 Shahed-type drones, along with 13 cruise and ballistic missiles, targeting multiple regions, Kyiv Independent reported. The capital suffered significant damage: residential buildings and the Cabinet of Ministers in central Kyiv were struck, leaving parts of the city without power.
Woman and newborn killed in Russian strike
In Kyiv, a tragic incident occurred in the Sviatoshynskyi district, where a woman and her newborn were killed after a building was hit. Inna, a local resident, told the Kyiv Independent:
“There was a young woman living on the 6th floor, who had recently given birth. She was thrown out into the street by the blast wave. She was found under the slab of the building at 5 AM. The child was also found dead.”
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that seven people were hospitalised, including a pregnant woman who gave birth prematurely following the attack. Doctors at Kyiv City Clinical Hospital are fighting to save the newborn, while three other patients remain in serious condition in the hospital’s burn unit. An elderly woman also died in a shelter in the Darnytskyi district, although the exact cause remains unclear.

Government building targeted
The strike also hit Kyiv’s Cabinet of Ministers building in the central Pecherskyi district, reportedly setting off a fire that had been extinguished by early Sunday morning. It is unclear whether the building was hit directly by a missile, drone, or falling debris, though Ukrainian sources suggest it was deliberately targeted.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attacks, calling them “deliberate crimes that only prolong the war”, and urged the international community to enforce sanctions against Russia. “Such killings, especially now when genuine diplomacy could have started long ago, are deliberate crimes that only prolong the war”, he said.

No sign of slowing down
The attack comes amid a recent surge in cross-border drone and missile strikes between Kyiv and Moscow. Ukrainian officials have warned that the Russian offensive shows no sign of slowing, as both sides continue to intensify aerial warfare.
Residents across the city reported hearing explosions from early morning hours, while local authorities activated air defences the previous evening in anticipation of further strikes. Fires also erupted in multiple multi-story residential buildings after Russian drone debris struck them.
