Revolut suspends certain services immediately in Hungary: here’s why

In a sudden move, Revolut has temporarily suspended all crypto-related services in Hungary with immediate effect. The announcement, sent to users via email on Friday evening, cites recent changes in Hungarian legislation as the reason for the decision.

What does this mean for users?

According to Revolut’s statement, several key crypto features are no longer available in Hungary:

  • Buying new cryptocurrencies is currently disabled
  • Staking new assets is no longer possible
  • Crypto deposits are being automatically rejected

However, users can still:

  • Sell their existing crypto assets within the app
  • Transfer certain tokens to external wallets (available for specific assets only)

What’s behind the suspension?

The background to the decision is a new legislative package passed by the Hungarian Parliament on 17 June 2025. Officially called the “Act on Amendments to Certain Laws to Improve Hungary’s Competitiveness”, the bill includes new provisions specifically targeting crypto activities.

The law introduces two new criminal offences into the Hungarian Criminal Code:

  • Abuse of crypto assets, and
  • Unauthorised provision of crypto asset exchange services

These new rules have forced Revolut to pause its crypto operations in the country, as the platform currently cannot ensure full legal compliance. However, the company emphasised that they are working hard to restore these services as soon as possible.

Do users need to do anything?

No action is required from users. The restrictions are being implemented automatically by the Revolut app. Users can continue to manage their existing crypto holdings, sell them, or transfer eligible tokens to external wallets.

Revolut also clarified that this change only affects crypto-related features in Hungary. All other services, including banking, card payments, currency exchange, and account management, continue to operate as normal.
