As we wrote yesterday, police arrested two men over the illegal shooting of a wolf that wandered from Switzerland to Hungary. The wolf, dubbed M237, had been tracked across Europe through a GPS collar it was fitted with. In early April, the signal was suddenly lost. Later, it became clear that the animal was shot.

The sad event happened near Hidasnémeti. After the shooting, the GPS collar was cut off and thrown into the River Hernád. During the police’s investigation, divers found the device deep in the stream. Police narrowed down the possible perpetrators and caught two men yesterday.

One of them was the father of the 9-year-old boy who shot the wolf. The child received a weapon from his father and accompanied the parent’s friend to the forest that day. After the boy shot the animal, they put its corpse into a car and cut the EUR 4,000 GPS collar.
