Romania maintains rejection of mandatory migrant quotas
Bucharest (MTI) – Romania continues to maintain its opposition to the European Union’s mandatory migrant quota system, Szabolcs Takács, state secretary for European affairs, said on Thursday after meeting officials in Bucharest.
After talks with President Klaus Iohannis’s European affairs advisor, Takács told MTI there are many issues concerning Europe on which the two countries’ positions are very similar. He said Romania shares Hungary’s scepticism of the quota system and both countries are prepared to contribute towards efforts to better protect the EU’s external borders.
A common standpoint was also that the European Council should not decide on a permanent mechanism for distributing migrants at this point, he said.
