Romanian couple arrested in Hungary after stealing jewellery worth almost EUR 30,000

Hungarian police have detained a Romanian couple suspected of stealing gold jewellery worth almost HUF 11 million (EUR 28,250) from a shop in the lakeside town of Balatonfüred.

According to an official police statement released on Saturday evening, the theft was reported on 16 August, when unknown offenders allegedly took a large quantity of valuable gold items from a local jewellery store.

Following an intensive investigation, detectives from the Balatonfüred Police Department identified the suspects as a 52-year-old Romanian man and his 46-year-old wife.

Once the couple’s identities were confirmed, Hungary’s police issued a warrant for their arrest. The investigation later revealed that the pair are believed to have committed similar offences in other Hungarian towns, including Keszthely, Pápa, and even Budapest.

The suspects were eventually stopped by Budapest police officers during a routine check in the capital on Thursday. They were taken into custody and formally questioned on suspicion of multiple counts of theft.

Authorities have initiated legal proceedings to request the pre-trial detention of both suspects. The investigation into the couple’s activities and possible links to other jewellery thefts across Hungary remains ongoing.
