Hungary weather: Scorching heat grips nation as relief approaches

According to Időkép’s forecast, today marks the final day of the sweltering, almost tropical heat — with cooler conditions expected from tomorrow. In the meantime, lake water temperatures are soaring, with some reaching as high as 30°C (86°F).
Good news: the heat will break, but beach weather will linger
Időkép’s latest forecast shows that the intense heat will ease after today, with temperatures set to fall by 4–9°C across the country from tomorrow. The change is due to a weak cold front moving in from the north, bringing north-westerly winds strong enough to sweep away the oppressive heat — but without spoiling conditions for those seeking sunshine by the water.

The winds will be brisk, while maximum temperatures are forecast to range between 28°C and 33°C (82°F–91°F) nationwide. Showers and thunderstorms — typical for this time of year — may also develop, with the risk of hailstones measuring 1–2 cm in diameter. Similar conditions are expected on Monday, potentially feeling a degree or two cooler.
Lake Balaton feels like bathwater
According to Infóstart, water temperatures at Lake Balaton, near Gyenesdiás, reached nearly 28°C (82°F) this morning. Similarly high readings were recorded at Lupa Lake, often called “Budapest’s beach.” But both pale in comparison to Lake Velence, where the water climbed to a steamy 30.9°C (87.6°F), Időkép reported.
For those seeking cooler relief, rivers are the better option. The Danube in Budapest, for instance, measured just 23.3°C (73.9°F). A new public beach has recently opened on the Danube in the capital — you can read more about it HERE.

Truck ban lifted due to scorching heat
A Level 3 heat alert remains in effect today, so motorists may notice more heavy goods vehicles on the roads. In response to the exceptional conditions, the Ministry of Transport has temporarily suspended the weekend lorry ban.
Normally, only vehicles transporting goods such as live animals, fresh milk and dairy, meat, baked goods, perishable produce, eggs, fresh fruit and vegetables, and grain are permitted to operate at weekends. Under the temporary measure, the ban is lifted from midnight Saturday until 6 a.m. on Sunday.
