Serbian fugitives caught in South Hungary

Hungarian authorities have arrested two armed Serbian fugitives in Szeged, in southern Hungary, a spokeswoman of the Csongrád County police department said on Thursday.

Slovak police notified their Hungarian colleagues last Friday of an ongoing international search for a vehicle that had been used in multiple bank robberies in Slovakia, Szilvia Szabó said. The Slovak authorities suspected that the vehicle had been driven to Hungary.

Hungarian police then found the car in Szeged on Tuesday and confirmed that its two passengers were staying at a nearby guesthouse. They later arrested the two fugitives in a joint operation with the counter-terrorism force TEK.

Authorities seized two firearms, ammunition and over 25,000 euros in cash in the operation.

Police were able to confirm that the two men claiming to be Croatian were actually Serbian citizens and that they had replaced their car’s licence plate.

They were placed under arrest on suspicion of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, abuse of a unique identifier and forgery of public documents.
