Orbán’s Fidesz: strong conservative right wing ‘needed’ in the EU

A strong conservative right wing “is needed” in the European Parliament, Kinga Gál, the head of ruling Fidesz party’s European parliamentary group, said on Saturday in Madrid at a panel discussion held at the Europa Viva 2024 convention organised by the Spanish Vox party.

Gál said bad decisions had been made in Brussels over the past five years. “The European Commission has responded to recent crises hitting Europe by centralising while weakening member states. This trend must be reversed,” she said.

Gál said she was confident that Hungarian presidency of the European Council starting in July would be successful as real issues affecting European citizens, such as strengthening European competitiveness and defence capabilities, would be given priority.

The Europa Viva event will continue on Sunday with a political rally at which Santiago Abascal, the president of Vox, will present the party’s programme for the June 9 European Parliament elections and introduce the candidates.

Video messages by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Italian premier Giorgia Meloni will be shown at the event, while Argentine President Javier Milei, former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawieczki and Marine Le Pen, president of the French National Coalition, will attend in person.
