Good news: Summer harvest successfully completed in Hungary – UPDATED: Sweet corn yield

With the summer harvest completed, both crop yields per hectare and the total amount harvested exceeded expectations, Minister of Agriculture Istvan Nagy was quoted as saying by his ministry in a statement on Tuesday.

Crop yields of all summer cereals as well as rapeseed exceeded the five-year averages, the minister said. Autumn wheat yielded 5.55 tonnes/hectare and autumn barley had an average yield of 5.7 tonnes/hectare.

The amount of crops necessary for domestic supply will be harvested in the 2025-2026 season, and around a million tonnes will be available for exports, the minister said. The sowing area of autumn wheat is up 5.9pc this year from a year earlier, he added.

UPDATE: Sweet corn yield set to be similar to last year’s

The average yield for sweet corn on a national level is set to be similar in 2025 to last year’s, the National Agriculture Chamber and growers association FruitVeB said on Tuesday.

In the northern part of the country the weather has been particularly good this year for sweet corn. In the southern part of the country the situation is not so bright and farmers can expect a weaker harvest, they said.

Sweet corn is grown on around 24,000 hectares, and a significant portion of the sweet corn produced is processed by the canning industry. Producers can supply the domestic market with fresh sweet corn from the end of May to the beginning of October.
