FM Szijjártó: Washington tried to topple the Orbán cabinet before

Change language:

Washington’s “earlier attempt” to topple the Hungarian government “has failed” and “the current attempt by Brussels will also fail”, Péter Szijjártó, the minister of foreign affairs and trade, told the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Budapest on Friday. European People’s Party leader Manfred Weber “had better realise that Viktor Orban is the future for us Hungarians,” he declared.

Hungarian government protects the Hungarians, says Szijjártó

Szijjártó called 2025 a “watershed year”. So far the Hungarian government “has had to make strenuous effort to protect national identity, children, and the country’s security, but now it is time to launch a counter-attack,” a ministry statement quoted him as saying.

“We had to protect ourselves from the war in Ukraine” he said. “For over three years they have kept pushing us to enter this war. But for over three years we have managed to resist those attempts… We have not sent arms or Hungarians’ money to fund a lost war, and we’ve kept diplomatic channels open all along, because we know that giving those up would equal giving up hope,” he added.

“In recent years we have had to protect ourselves, our security and identity from illegal migration. It’s absurd that those posing as champions of democracy, whose favourite slogan is the rule of law, disregard international law,” Szijjártó said.

Under international law, he said, refugees have the right to stay in the first safe country, “not in the second, the fifth, or tenth country. Hungary, for migrants coming from the south, is definitely not the first category.”

Illegal migrants stopped at border

Hungary’s border fence “stops every illegal migrant” and “we will preserve Hungary as a migrant-free country in the future,” Szijjártó said. “It’s crazy that we have to pay a fine of a daily one million euros to Brussels for that.”

Meanwhile, the minister said: “We’ve had to protect our children from increasingly aggressive gender propaganda, and we’ve managed to ensure that gender organisations are not allowed to enter kindergartens or schools and not allowed to tell a girl that, even if you are a girl, you can consider yourself a little boy from tomorrow.”

The government has had to protect itself from continued attacks by “the liberal mainstream” in Brussels and in Washington, because “the former US administration considered Hungary its enemy”, Szijjarto said.
