Mihály Győrfi, the mayor of Szolnok (East Hungary), has asked Prime Minister Péter Magyar to stop a planned electrolyte factory in Szolnok in a letter, citing “serious environmental risks”.
In the letter, posted on Győrfi’s Facebook page on Monday, the mayor noted that the Szolnok municipal council had recently withdrawn its earlier support for the investment that the former Fidesz-KDNP central government had wanted to “force” on the city.
Győrfi also asked the prime minister to roll back the “priority” designation for the investment.
Plans were announced early in 2025 for Chinese-owned KunlunChem to build a HUF 40bn electrolyte factory in Szolnok to supply the EVs made at the local factories of BMW and Mercedes, the Hungarian News Agency wrote.
