Wizz Air launches new flight to German city, may receive giant fine from Spain

Wizz Air launches new flight to German city Stuttgart

Wizz Air, Hungary’s budget airline, launched its brand new flight to Stuttgart, commuting five times a week. Meanwhile, they may get an incredible fine in Spain for their luggage policies.

New Wizz Air flight to German city

According to Budflyer, a Hungarian aviation news Facebook page, the first Wizz Air flight took off from Budapest Airport to Stuttgart, Germany. The flight will carry passengers five times a week: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Such flights are crucial because tens of thousands of Hungarians work in Germany, and they regularly come back to visit family or do official business.

According to the German Statistical Office (Destatis), more than 210 thousand Hungarian nationals lived in Germany in December 2023. That is a 3,230 decrease compared to 2022, but still very high.

Spain may fine Wizz Air for millions of euro

Spain’s social affairs ministry fined four budget airlines. One of the reasons for the brutal 150-million-euro fine is that the airlines should enable passengers to bring trolley bags on board for free. Based on Okosutas, such a measure would make boarding longer and plane circulation more difficult. Furthermore, it would increase the aircraft’s weight due to the many bags, which will impact its emission.

Okosutas argues that budget airlines introduced the payable trolley bag scheme in the 2010s to decrease ticket costs. That is because those who do not carry large bags on their journey can travel cheaply. For example, with Wizz Air, one carry-on bag (max 10 kg and 40 x 30 x 20 cm) is free, which is enough for half the passengers. Other budget airlines have similar regulations concerning luggage.

Four airlines were fined 150 million euros: Ryanair, Easyjet, Vueling, and Volotea. Wizz Air and Norwegian are also present in the Spanish market, but they did not receive a fine in this round. Okosutas wrote that all low-cost air travel sector functions follow the free carry-on and payable trolley bag rule. If that changes, plane ticket prices will increase. The airlines concerned did not accept the Spanish decision, they appealed to local courts.

Internationally renowned street artist’s work decorates the passenger pier at Budapest Airport

According to Budapest Airport, “passenger pier at Terminal 2 is adorned with the artwork of internationally renowned street artist Gergely Void, created in collaboration with children living in state care. With the purchase of the painting, Budapest Airport Plc. supported the Foundation for Children in State Care (Világszép Alapítvány), which helps young people living in children’s homes in Hungary, and Unicef Hungary”.

Four why reasons Spain could win Euro 2024

spain flag

Sponsored content

As Euro 2024 approaches, debates are starting to occur amongst football fans and pundits alike over who they think could win the sought-after title in Germany.

Spain are slight underdogs in the Euro 2024 betting at 9/1, but La Roja are gearing up for a compelling campaign that will be challenging from the get-go.

Despite the absence of key midfielders Pedri and Gavi due to injury, there are still numerous reasons to believe that Spain can emerge victorious under the guidance of manager Luis de la Fuente.

As we count down the remaining days to Euro 2024, here are four major factors that could propel Spain to victory in Germany.

  1. Tactical flexibility

Many questioned the appointment of de la Fuente given his lack of experience, with even the manager himself previously admitting he was surprised to be appointed by the Royal Spanish Football Federation.

However, under the leadership of de la Fuente, Spain have continued to evolve tactically and are heading back in the right direction after a disappointing exit in the round of 16 at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar under Luis Enrique.

Known for his adaptability and strategic mind, de la Fuente has successfully blended the traditional Spanish possession-based style with a more direct approach, making the team unpredictable and difficult to defend against.

Attacking full-backs are a big part of de la Fuente’s tactical nous, while he also likes to deploy a more traditional centre-forward — which goes against the majority of Spain squads in years gone by, who have usually used a false nine.

  1. Depth and rotation

Spain’s squad depth allows them to handle the loss of key players like Pedri and Gavi. De la Fuente has used over 40 players since taking over from Enrique, including giving senior international debuts to over 10 players.

Real Sociedad defender Robin Le Normand and Real Madrid’s Joselu have emerged as regulars in the Spain squad, along with the likes of Pau Torres of Aston Villa, Paris Saint-Germain’s Fabian Ruiz, and Mikel Oyarzabal, a teammate of Le Normand at Sociedad.

But what makes de la Fuente unique is the aforementioned unpredictability. His knack for chopping and changing the team and using various players in certain positions will make it very difficult for sides to prepare for their matches with Spain at the Euros.

In fact, de la Fuente played a different XI in all eight of La Roja’s European qualifiers, often making mass changes to the team and using a vast variety of players.

  1. Core squad

While de la Fuente likes rotating his starting XIs, there is still an importance on the core players and the newly formed spin of the team.

Unai Simon has stepped up as Spain’s number-one goalkeeper and the Athletic Bilbao shot-stopper has been largely impressive between the sticks, while Le Normand has shown at centre-back despite high-profile competition from Aymeric Laporte and Torres.

Manchester City midfielder Rodri is, undoubtedly, Spain’s most important player. He’s a born leader both on and off the pitch and will be key to La Roja in Germany.

Alvaro Morata, rejuvenated back at Atletico Madrid, wears the captain’s armband and scored four goals in six games throughout qualifying. He bagged three goals and an assist in four games at the World Cup and will be hoping for another good showing in a big tournament.

  1. Exciting youth

One of the main reasons de la Fuente was entrusted with the responsibility of the senior Spain job was due to his experience and success with the nation’s youth sides, winning the European Under-19 Championship in 2015 and the European U-21 Championship in 2015.

Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsi has been capped twice at just 17 and is likely to make it to the Euros, while Alex Baena (22), Nico Williams (21), and Lamine Yamal (16) are some of the other players who will bring youthful exuberance to the Spanish fold in Germany.

For the fans, Spain might not seem like one of the biggest threats at Euro 2024. But when you break them down, they have every chance of going far in the tournament and perhaps faring better than their run to the semi-final of the tournament three years ago.

What is happening? Former Hungarian President Katalin Novák’s recent photo wiped off the internet

President of Hungary Katalin Novák

Former President of Hungary Katalin Novák appeared at the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art on Thursday in the company of a high-ranking Spanish military officer. However, the photo shared by the institution on social media was deleted almost immediately. What could be behind this urgent removal?

Katalin Novák’s resignation

Earlier this year, the news about Katalin Novák’s resignation made a big splash. The former President of Hungary announced the news on the 10th of February, right after the paedophile scandal got out. She had granted a presidential pardon to Endre K. last April. K. was the deputy director of the Bicske children’s home. He helped the paedophile director coerce children who had confessed against him.

Months of silence

As 24.hu writes, since stepping down, Katalin Novák has remained conspicuously absent from publicity. It is quite notable that she did not even attend the inauguration of her successor, Tamás Sulyok. However, it has come to light that she has requested a three-person secretariat in the Szabad György Office Building.

Former Presidents of Hungary are entitled to the same salary as current Heads of State throughout their lifetime, currently set at HUF 5.2 million (EUR 13,437) gross per month. Furthermore, the law grants Katalin Novák free medical care, a car, and a perpetual three-person secretariat.

Unexpected public appearance

Novák appeared at the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art on Thursday in the company of a high-ranking Spanish military officer. The institution posted the following on their social media:

Yesterday, Katalin Novák, former President of Hungary, and Ignacio Rosales de Salamanca, the delegate of the Spanish Defence Delegation in Andalusia, visited us.

There were a few photos posted of the two, however, the post was deleted urgently. 24.hu has tried to contact the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art to ask why they had to take off the post. However, there has not been an answer yet.

Hungarian passengers stranded in Barcelona due to extreme weather

Hungarian passengers who wanted to return to Hungary on Monday night were stranded in Barcelona. One passenger said Wizz Air had acted unfairly, while the airline said it had done everything it could.

Wizz Air passengers received a text message about the delay of the Monday night flight from Barcelona to Budapest during the day. The flight was eventually cancelled shortly after midnight, but according to an Index reader who wanted to travel home, the airline communicated this as if it was still just a delay, and the new schedule would see the flight departing on Tuesday afternoon.  Airport staff were unable to accommodate passengers in hotel rooms even at 1:30 AM, so the Hungarian passengers waited together for the arrangements to be made.

“The airport employee was arrogant and seemed to be out of control, as after three hours of waiting they could not even accommodate one passenger. Wizz Air was not represented locally. People asked whether or not they would get their checked baggage back, but again they received conflicting answers. Eventually, it emerged that the airport had already placed the checked baggage at the baggage claim points, which by then had been going around the deserted airport unattended for hours. Some were with children, many would have been at work the next day, including me,” wrote the Index reader.

The reader added: “Since Wizz Air had all passengers sign a declaration at check-in, we could have guessed that they were not being fair, because instead of telling them that the flight had not even taken off from Budapest, they kept on telling passengers all day and night that there would only be a delay.”

The writer of the letter has no knowledge of the fate of the Hungarians stuck at the airport, as they went to a hotel with their partner at their own expense. “How we will get home is not yet known,” the passenger said, who was still in Spain on Tuesday morning.

Wizz Air’s response

Index wrote to Wizz Air, which sent the following reply:

“On 22 April, due to the exceptional weather situation, the Wizz Air Barcelona-Budapest flight was unable to take off safely on time. The airline informed passengers of the expected delay using the contact details provided when booking the flight, and when it became clear that the aircraft would not be able to take off that day, Wizz Air’s ground handling partner immediately started to organise accommodation for passengers,” the airline told the news portal. Wizz added that the latter took longer than usual due to a local Catalan holiday, which meant that some passengers were only able to check in at night.

In their reply, they also stressed that, in addition to accommodation, the passengers concerned were also offered the possibility of free rebooking, a 100% refund of the purchase price of their ticket or a 120% credit of the original fare in Wizz credit. “And while the incident was not the fault of the airline, Wizz Air apologises to all concerned for the inconvenience and will continue to ensure the safety of its passengers, crew and aircraft,” the Hungarian airline said.

According to Hungarian House Speaker Kövér, Europe lags behind global competitors

Hungarian government parliament crisis Hungarian House Speaker

In the past five years policies “dictated by the European Commission have caused the greatest fiasco in the history of the European Union as Europe seriously lags behind its peers in terms of world economic competitiveness,” László Kövér, Hungarian House Speaker, said in Spain on Tuesday.

Speaking on the closing day of a conference of EU house speakers in Palma, Kövér said “most Europeans are worse off than five years ago.”

The Hungarian House Speaker cited US economist Jeffrey Sachs as saying that “Brussels is controlled by the USA”. “I, however, will say that where human failings provide sufficient explanation we don’t need to look for a more complex one … Brussels’s failures are caused by bureaucrats pushing ideological solutions to economic issues,” he said.

The EU’s elite is “absolutely unsuitable” for their positions because they are “unable to give a response … to the US gaining unilaterally against its European allies through its energy and industrial policies,” Kövér said.

In the past five years “Brussels bureaucrats have seriously abused climate protection policy, often taking it to the extreme in an economic sense,” he said. This has led to a “tangible reduction in society’s support” for climate targets and measures as demonstrated by farmers’ protests across Europe in recent months, he said.

Europe’s agriculture “is not only compromised by the unacceptable dumping of Ukrainian grain and products of dubious quality but by Brussels’s so called green over-regulation,” the Hungarian House Speaker said.

The EU cannot “return from the clouds of ideologies to economic rationality” unless it “takes the different economic levels, national characteristics, economic abilities of people and businesses, competitiveness, as well as the interests of people and businesses in members states,” Kövér said.

Hungary rejects “an emerging practice” of taking out joint loans and “an interpretation of economic governance that is in fact aimed at further centralisation within the EU and increasing the power of EU bureaucrats,” the Hungarian House Speaker said. “All those will not serve to reinforce the EU but result in further divisions and weakening it,” he said.

The Hungarian House Speaker also said the inter-parliamentary conference to be held during the Hungarian presidency in the second half of this year would “reflect on the most burning problems of Europe”. He said the enlargement of the EU, security challenges facing Europe, the continent’s demographic trends, the EU’s economic policies, illegal migration and the future of structural funds would be high on the agenda of those events.

The house speaker said that five of the conferences would be hosted in the Hungarian Parliament, adding that another conference on the control over Europol, co-organised with the European Parliament, would be held in Brussels.

He added that a conference on cultural heritage and national identity would also be held in Budapest in early December.

On the sidelines of the conference in Palma, the Hungarian House Speaker had bilateral talks with his Dutch, Norwegian, Montenegrin, Moldavian, Armenian, and Serbian counterparts.

The next conference of European house speakers will be held in Hungary in May next year.

Will Hungarian investors seize Spain’s largest rail vehicle manufacturer with Russian funds?

Putin Orbán Russia corruption hungarian

The Hungarian company Ganz-Mavag Europe Plc., a member of the MaVag Group, has initiated a voluntary takeover bid for 100% of Talgo’s shares, which is a Spanish manufacturer of high-speed trains. The move is aimed at fostering synergies between the two companies.

György Bacsa, the chairman of Ganz-Mavag Europe Plc., expressed that Talgo’s board of directors finds the offer favourable, emphasising the transaction’s focus on enhancing manufacturing and development cultures jointly. The strategic partnership is anticipated to benefit both parties, which will enable Talgo to expand its capacity and strengthen its presence in European and Eastern markets while facilitating MaVag’s manufacturing capabilities, according to Index.

The offer and the plans

Despite the struggling railway industry in the aftermath of the regime change in Hungary, MaVag has emerged as a significant player who sells Hungarian-built trainsets globally. Seeking further growth, MaVag identified the need for international strategic partnerships, finding a potential ally in the Spanish manufacturer. The board of directors of Talgo expressed favorability towards the offer from Ganz-Mavag Europe Plc. and emphasised its benefits for shareholders.

The chairman of the board of directors of Ganz-Mavag Europe Plc. stressed the importance of maintaining Talgo’s independence and technological prowess while committing to supporting its strategy as a Spanish-listed company. The chairman highlighted the shared goal of fostering European industrial development and sustainable mobility through strategic cooperation.

Spanish Transport Minister opposes the Hungarian bid

The recent developments in the Hungarian bid for the Talgo train factory include the Hungarian group’s agreement with Talgo’s creditors providing financial clearance. However, the Spanish Transport Minister Óscar Puente vows to reject the bid because of suspicions of Viktor Orbán‘s involvement and potential Russian connections within the Hungarian group, according to Telex.

The Spanish government led by Pedro Sánchez expressed scepticism towards Viktor Orbán’s involvement in the Hungarian bid for Talgo. The reason for the scepticism is fear of potential ties to Russian investors or the Hungarian state. Despite claims in Spanish business papers regarding the financial backing of the Hungarian group, data from Hungarian sources contradicts this information.

The Hungarian bidder must secure an agreement with Talgo’s lending banks to ensure financial stability as any change in ownership could prompt debt recall. However, political approval remains a necessity with documentation needing submission to Spain’s Ministry of Economy and subsequent review by the Foreign Investment Council. The recent statement from Minister Puente suggests a preemptive rejection of the bid by the Council of Ministers.

Is there a Russian connection?

The Hungarian group’s corporate registry revealed a Russian connection but the Russians sold their 50% stake in the company to MVBV Plc. after the start of the Ukrainian and Russian conflict. The other 50% owner is Cato Investments which is linked to András Tombor.

As of recently, the Hungarian state has acquired a 45% stake in the project company which oversees the acquisition of the Spanish train manufacturer for EUR 7,000, according to HVG. Moreover, a member of the National Capital Holding’s board is suspected of joining the project company’s supervisory board, which can lead to the growth of the Hungarian’s state influence over the company.

The majority shareholder of the company, the Hungarian Wagon Group, which was founded by the Minister of Defence Kristóf-Szalay-Bobrovniczky, is now owned by a private equity fund. This fund, which was formed through the government‘s privatisation of MÁV’s vehicle manufacturing and repair capacity, faces challenges in fulfilling significant orders from Egypt, which is also part of a partnership with Russia.

Hungarian minister said what is needed to protect Europe’s future

Hungarian minister said what is needed to protect Europe's future Szijjártó

Radical changes are needed in Brussels’ migration policy in order to protect Europe’s future, international law should be respected and those that act in line with it must not be punished, the foreign minister said in Madrid on Tuesday.

The ministry cited Péter Szijjártó saying after talks with Spanish counterpart Jose Manuel Albares that Madrid would help Budapest in several areas under the arrangement of the current presidency trio of the Council of the European Union made up of Spain, Belgium and Hungary.

Szijjártó said Europe was currently facing some very serious challenges, such as illegal migration. Last year, the number of migrants arriving in Spain went up by 82 percent on 2022. At the same time, pressure was also increasing in Hungary, with 170,000 illegal border crossing attempts thwarted by the authorities last year, he added.

“Taking into consideration that the threat of terrorism is more severe than ever before in Africa, and economic development cannot progress at the pace of population increase, we can expect a migratory pressure to toughen on Europe,” the foreign minister said.

Europeans lose Europe?

“If Brussels maintains its pro-migration policy, then there will be a realistic danger that Europeans lose Europe because Brussels’ migration policy attracts people to the continent,” he added.

At the same time, Szijjártó said that speeding up the enlargement of the European Union was among the priorities of Hungary’s upcoming EU presidency.

“In terms of enlargement, we must focus on making sure that countries of the Western Balkans get entry in the EU as soon as possible,” he added.

Commenting on Hungarian-Spanish economic relations, Szijjártó welcomed last year’s record trade volume of 6 billion euros. He said he had met the leaders of several Spanish companies that had made investments in Hungary and they all expressed satisfaction about the business environment. Szijjártó also said that over 300,000 Hungarians had visited Spain last year, and more than 200,000 Spanish tourists had come to Hungary, both numbers increasing over 40 percent.

Szijjártó meets Spanish company execs

Around 200 Spanish companies employ some 50,000 people in Hungary, and continue to invest in the country, the minister of foreign affairs and trade said on Facebook on Tuesday.

Peter Szijjarto met the heads of Spanish car manufacturing, tourism, traffic, air transport, finance and energy companies for talks on further investments in Hungary earlier on Tuesday in Madrid.

“It was good to hear the feedback of Spanish companies, many of whom see Hungary’s economic strategy and the government’s economic policy as an example. Hungary’s attraction lies in its low taxes, an investor-friendly economic environment and well-trained workforce,” Szijjarto said.

Hungary has overcome last year’s economic difficulties created by the war, sanctions and the resulting inflation, Szijjarto said. “We have broken down inflation, maintained energy security and record employment, and proved that Hungary’s economy is operational without EU funds. The trust and investments of Spanish companies has been a great help,” he added.

Saddest day of the year: Wizz Air is preparing for today with huge promotions

Wizz Air has responded to the saddest day of the year, Blue Monday, by offering big promotions to make the day even better for us.

Years ago, a university professor worked out a formula with scientific rigour that uses the law of large numbers to tell us which day of the year people are saddest. According to the methodology, the third Monday of every January is the best day to go, when people experience the darker weather, the start of the year and the week, and the post-holiday doldrums all at once.

It seems that Wizz Air is helping to brighten up the day: with discounted flights, sunshine and adventure in many far-flung places.

Orbán Bolsonaro meeting

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán held talks with former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro in Buenos Aires on Saturday, his press chief said.

Their talks focused on the international cooperation of conservative parties and the Hungarian prime minister briefed Bolsonaro about the political achievements of the European right, Bertalan Havasi told MTI.

Orbán wished Bolsonaro much success in the Brazilian municipal elections next year while the former president wished the Hungarian premier success in the EP and Hungarian local elections also taking place in 2024.

The Hungarian prime minister is in Buenos Aires to attend the inauguration of Javier Milei, the newly elected president of Argentina, on Sunday.

MEP Gyöngyösi: If you reject the rule of law, you reject Europe

spain flag
 Sponsored content

Hungarian MEP Márton Gyöngyösi (Non-Attached Member of the European Parliament) published a press release about the situation in Spain:

In the past few days, Spain has seen a massive wave of street protests in response to the public outcry triggered by the politically motivated amnesty for Catalan separatists, which contradicts the very principle that (ideally) forms the foundation of European democracy: the rule of law.

Of course, every community that considers itself a state has some sort of a legal system, but we are fully aware that legal systems can be vastly different. We have the examples to show for, from the past as well as the present.

The first and most significant difference is what immediately sets authoritarianism apart from the rule of law: the former is characterized by an authoritarian, politically driven legislation and law interpretation, which allows the privileged to be exempted from the effects of the law from time to time.

In contrast, a state with a firm rule of law is characterized by a universal application of the legal regulations where all citizens, including politicians and cabinet ministers, are required to abide by the same law.

It comes as no surprise that the Orbán government’s use of power has been widely criticized in Europe, because its interpretation of the law is eerily similar to that of dictatorships: even though the country has laws, they do not apply to certain people, while the legal codes and even the constitution are typically amended on a personalized and political basis, without social debate or agreement.

Just to show you that these methods are not exclusively used by the populist right, let me cite the example of Spain, where the Socialist Pedro Sánchez thought his own political interests can override Spain’s rule of law. In order to secure the majority for his government, he wished to make a deal with the Catalan separatists who, back in 2017, unilaterally organized a referendum on the region’s independence, thus gravely violating Spain’s constitution and laws. In an effort to accomplish his goal, Sánchez now wishes to grant amnesty to the Catalan politicians who were convicted by a final court judgement. He intends to do so in a personalized, politically motivated manner.

I have expressed my views on the question of Catalan independence several times. I have stated that Catalonia, as an autonomous region, has all the rights and licences that are necessary for the Catalan people to preserve their identity.

They have their own education, police, self-governance in internal affairs – considering all that, it’s hard to understand what may have motivated Catalan separatists to hold a referendum, other than subversion and far-left rampage.

Furthermore, I also believe that any political disputes and historical differences of opinion between Madrid and Barcelona should primarily be settled by Madrid and Barcelona, just as Spanish citizens should have the right to decide what kind of laws they want to adopt in their country and what sort of sanctions should be applied for certain acts.

However, the rule of law should never be a matter of dispute in Europe, but Pedro Sánchez’ action violates and rejects this principle. And if you reject the principle, you reject European values.

Disclaimer: the sole liability for the opinions stated rests with the author(s). These opinions do not necessarily reflect the official position of the European Parliament.

Lots of new flights announced by Wizz Air, here’s where to escape the cold

Wizz Air Istanbul Airport

Hungarian-based Wizz Air has announced additional flight cancellations to the Spanish coast for the upcoming winter period.

Frequent flights to Spain

Wizz Air now operates flights to Alicante with triple the capacity compared to the previous year. Last year, we had three flights per week, but this year, in addition to Wizz Air’s six weekly flights, Ryanair has also introduced three additional flights. Consequently, Wizz Air now provides daily flights to Spain, except on Mondays.

The expansion will come into effect from 5 December. Until then, passengers will be served by four weekly flights departing from Hungary, and this condensed schedule will remain in effect until the end of March.

The rationale behind this increase in flights remains uncertain, as there has been no mention of substantial passenger demand. According to okosutazas.hu, the airport there may be offering the airline attractive prices. One thing is certain: passengers will benefit, as they can now travel to Spain at very affordable fares.

Drunk Romanian man smashes Wizz plane door, 224 passengers stranded at airport

224 passengers were stranded at Zaragoza airport in Spain after a drunk Romanian man started pulling on the Wizz Air plane door before take-off and broke it. As a result, passengers on their way to Bucharest were taken off the plane and had to wait for the door to be repaired.

A Romanian citizen who drunkenly boarded a WizzAir flight from Zaragoza (Spain) to Bucharest broke the door of the aircraft of the Hungarian low-cost carrier Wizz Air, causing a delay of several hours, gandul.ro reports. As a result of the incident, the 224 passengers had to get off the plane and wait until they could take off.

The incident took place on Saturday, 30 September, at 09:15 local time. The Romanian man got on the plane drunk and tried to open the door before take-off. He pulled so hard on it he eventually broke the door. Because of this, the aircraft was unable to take off and passengers had no choice but to wait for several hours until the problem was solved.

Shortly after, airport officials called the police to handle the situation, elmundo.es reports. Law enforcement officers helped evacuate and transfer passengers.

According to the source, passengers were not able to leave Zaragoza until 23.00. They then departed on another plane. However, because the second aircraft was smaller than the first, 50 passengers had to stay in Zaragoza due to lack of space.

Wall fell on a Spanish tourist and her kids

The sorrowful events happened yesterday when a Spanish tourist was walking in Budapest’s famous Kazinczy Street in the 7th district.

According to index.hu, workers were dismantling a building on Kazinczy Street. However, debris fell on a Spanish tourist walking on the street. She was there with her two children, but luckily, the kids did not suffer any injuries in the accident.

The Hungarian Disaster Management Authority told index.hu that their call centre received a ring on Thursday afternoon. They were told that the wall of a building under dismantling fell. As a result, brick and tile covered the nearby Kazinczy Street. Máté Márk Kisdi, the authority’s spokesman, said Budapest firefighters arrived on the spot shortly after the call. They separated the building by cordon tapes and notified other authorities.

The building concerned was one of Budapest’s first private bakeries in the ownership of the Bánd (Band) family. Their bread and philantropy was well-known before and after the first world war. Their bakery closed after WWII and its nationalisation.

Government official: People challenge idea of Hungarian identity nowadays

Many are challenging the idea of national identity nowadays, Bence Rétvári, a state secretary at the interior ministry, said at the third All-Hungarian Mother Tongue Camp in Sátoraljaújhely, in north-eastern Hungary, on Tuesday.

“Some say material possessions are more important than Hungarian identity and the characteristics we are born with,” Rétvári said.

“Our innate qualities aren’t something we should leave behind, since it is what binds Hungarians and Christians together,” the state secretary said.

A camp organised by the Rákóczi Association can help its participants “get more out of themselves and overcome themselves”, Rétvári said, expressing hope that the students would return to the Sátoraljaújhely camp. Those attending the camp can learn more about Hungarian history, culture and language, he said.

Some 10,000 young Hungarians from beyond the border have attended the Rákóczi Association’s camps, Rétvári said, adding that some 1,000 Hungarians have taken part in the Kőrösi Csoma Sándor and Petőfi programme for Hungarian communities in the Carpathian Basin and in the diaspora.

Csongor Csáky, the Rákóczi Association’s president, told public media that this year’s camp is attended by students from the Carpathian Basin, Southern Transylvania and Transcarpathia, as well as from Canada, Spain and Australia.

Three Hungarian criminals on Europol’s Most Wanted list have been detained by the Hungarian and Spanish police, the Hungarian police reported on its website.

The three men, referred to as István Sándor V., Roland V., and Tibor Erik K and wanted for drug-related crimes, were arrested in Calp on July 19, the website said.

The suspects are believed to have operated a professional, automated cannabis plantation and processing facility in south-eastern Hungary in 2020 and 2021, which the Hungarian police wound up in May 2021. At the time, the authorities seized 165 kilogrammes of marijuana and assets worth over a combined HUF 380 million (EUR 983,700). The authorities identified all seven members of the gang, and arrested two of them in Hungary soon after.

The other five members were included on the European Most Wanted list of 54 criminals. István Sándor V. and the other two suspects fled to Spain and started smuggling drugs into Hungary. According to the police investigation so far, they smuggled at least 100 kilogrammes of marijuana and 10 kilogrammes of cocaine over the course of 10 trips to Hungary. Last November, when one of their accomplices entered Hungary from Slovenia, the police seized 16 kilogrammes of marijuana and a kilogramme of cocaine, the website said.

According to the website, the last two members of the gang, Tamás Bagaméri and András Csikós, are still at large.
