Orban handed over FINA flag at World Championship closing event

Kazan (MTI) – Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban was handed over the flag of the international swimming federation FINA at the closing event of the 2015 World Championships in Kazan, Republic of Tatarstan in Russia, late on Sunday.

Orban, representing Hungary as the host country of the next aquatics championships in 2017, praised the work of the event’s organisers in his speech.

“According to the medal table, Russia earned nine gold medals but in fact there must be ten of them because the Republic of Tatarstan and Kazan deserve one more medal for the organisation of the 16th FINA World Championships. You’ve set the bar very high,” Orban said.

“We will do everything possible to host the competitions to the highest standard in Budapest. I hope that after staging the championships in Budapest, we will be as proud and content as you right now when we will be handing the FINA Flag over to the next host city. See you all in Budapest in 2017!”, he added.

Hungary was originally going to host the 2021 event but Guadalajara in Mexico has withdrawn from hosting the 2017 championships and Hungary took over in March this year.

Water World Cup: Budapest will have 2 new bridges

The question arises how the organizers will handle with the increased pedestrian, car and bus traffic between the Swimming Palace will be built in the area of Dagaly Bath and the Margitsziget Sport Swimming Pool during the Water World Cup, sport.hir24.hu said.

At this stage, you can cross over the Arpad bridge, but according to the organizers, it would be reasonable to build a pedestrian bridge at Drava Street – 444.hu said. We need to think of not a permanent, but a temporary pontoon bridge, which is a cheaper solution. The shiptraffic would be deflected to the other side of the island during the World Cup.

Creating a sufficient number of parking lots in close proximity of the swimming complex is also a source of problems, so parking places are planned on the south and north shore of creek Rakos, and the two sides will be connected by a pedestrian bridge – the plan says, which was received by the 13th district council.

Orban addresses ceremony at new Budapest pool for 2017 world championship

Budapest, May 15 (MTI) – Time constraints and other obstacles can be resolved by joining forces, Prime Minister Viktor Orban said at the cornerstone laying ceremony of the Dagaly swimming centre in Budapest to be built for the 2017 World Aquatics Championships.

Less than 800 days are left for the construction of the facilities, but Hungary should prove that it can complete the project in two years instead of four, like others have, Orban told the event on Friday. He promised that Hungary would act not simply as an organiser of the event but as a true host.

The event was also attended by FINA chairman Julio C. Maglione and Budapest Mayor Istvan Tarlos. Hungary was originally planning to host the 2021 championships but after Guadalajara from Mexico withdrew from being the host of the 2017 event, Budapest accepted the task.

The new swimming complex with a capacity of 18,000 is planned to be completed by March 31, 2017.

Five billion likely to tune into 2017 World Aquatics Championships

The signing ceremony, broadcast live by public news channel M1, was attended by FINA Managing Director Cornel Marculescu and Hungarian swimming federation leader Tamas Gyarfas.

The event was originally planned to be held in Guadalajara in Mexico but the city pulled out in February for financial reasons.

FINA announced on March 11 that it granted the right to host the event to Budapest.

Five billion likely to tune into 2017 World Aquatics Championships

Budapest, April 8 (MTI) – Five billion TV viewers are expected to tune into the Budapest 2017 World Aquatics Championships, the head of Hungary’s swimming federation told business daily Napi Gazdasag on Wednesday.

Tamas Gyarfas, who is also the head of the event’s organising committee, said the figure was realistic considering that 4.53 billion watched the 2013 Barcelona event.

The budget for the Budapest event is 85 million dollars which is also to finance the construction of a new swimming complex with a capacity of 18,000 on the area of the Dagaly baths in northern Budapest.

Sports economist Gabor Szabados told the paper that 90-95 percent of the budget will go to infrastructure development, including road modernisation, public transport reorganisation and landscaping.

He said it is unlikely that a return on costs will exceed 50 percent but the 16-day event could prove invaluable in boosting Hungary’s image. Further, the new swimming complex would be suitable as a centre for water sports and leisure over the next 40-50 years.

Mihaly Muszbek, another sport economist, told the paper that foreigners generally make up 7-12 percent of the supporters attending such sport events. They usually spend 4-5 days in the city and spend around 1,000 euros per person. If the 2017 World Aquatics attracts only 200,000 visitors and 20,000 of them arrive from abroad, then 100,000 guest nights will be spent in Budapest thanks to the event, he added.

Hungary Prepares For 2021 World Aquatics Championships With Grandiose Plan

According to Hungarian Swimming Association, there are plans that the diving event of the 2021 World Aquatics Championships in Budapest will be held in a special location near the Chain bridge. The idea is to make the top of the bridge a diving board and let athletes dive into a swimming pool floating underneath the bridge.

The idea is being raised by leading government commissioner of National Sports Centres László Vigh at a meeting with FINA vice-President Tamás Gyárfás and international federation ( FINA ) Executive Director Cornel Marculescu who made a short visit in Hungary.

Hungarian Swimming Association said, the Government Commissioner believes that by holding the diving event on the Danube river allows the media to broadcast stunningly beautiful images of the event with backgrounds of the Hungarian Parliament and the Castle district.

FINA president said a similar solution was being contemplated this year’s World Cup in Kazan, Russia, so FINA was open to this solution and also supports the idea that Hungary soon join the World Cup series.

The final decision to be taken jointly by the organizing committee of the event and FINA after assessing all aspects of the proposal.

SWC 2013, Singapore Day 2: Hosszu the most medalled woman with five golds and two silvers

Hosszu was the most medalled woman with five golds and two silvers, only missing the podium in one race — the 50m butterfly — in her final event.

Hosszu’s opening swim of the night, the 400m IM, registered 4:27.60, and was nearly seven seconds off her Berlin world-record pace. She seemed to tire over the freestyle leg as Britain’s Hannah Miley (4:28.75) and Spain’s Mireia Belmonte (4:28.90) hunted her down. However, it was good enough for a sixth straight 400m IM victory.

“Medals from Singapore. I’m really happy with my times, I was able to break three Hungarian national records! Thank you for all the support! And tomorrow we are leaving for Tokyo.”, Hosszu published this post on Facebook.

She won the 100m backstroke over Australia’s Emily Seebohm, was out-touched for gold by German Franziska Hentke in the 200m butterfly after winning the previous five editions, and had a rapid start to the 50m butterfly, but fatigue set in and she finished last.

I think there will be a great atmosphere,” said BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt.

Hungary swimming sensation Katinka Hosszu looks game for Moscow encore in Dubai

Dubai – Hungarian swimming sensation Katinka Hosszu lived up to expectations on Thursday morning, qualifying first for the finals in all but one of the five events she contested on the first day of the Fina Swimming World Cup.

Hosszu again showed her versatility, dominating the 200m freestyle, 100m butterfly, 50m backstroke and 200m IM, before being touched out in the 200m backstroke by Ukrainian backstroke specialist Daryna Zevina, where she qualified second.

“I’m feeling really good, better than I did in Moscow. I came into Moscow straight off training so I feel more rested now, even though it’s tough racing back to back,” said Hosszu.

Hosszu has an incredibly demanding programme, swimming nine events over the two days, and while she is in great form she will face some tough competition. In the 200m freestyle final, Hosszu will be up against the Spanish duo of World and Olympic silver medallist Mireia Belmonte Garcia and World Champion 400m (short course) Melanie Costa, along with Olympic gold medallist (400m freestyle) Camille Muffat of France. Also lining up is multiple World and Olympic gold medallist in the freestyle relay, Femke Heemskerk of the Netherlands.

Hungarian victory to no avail

Hungary’s outside hopes of claiming a 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ play-off spot came to naught despite ending their Group D campaign with a 2-0 triumph over Andorra.

Nermanja Nikolic’s header and an own goal from Ildefons Lima meant the win was a positive end to a turbulent few days for the Hungarians, who saw coach Sandor Egervari resign after an 8-1 mauling at the hands of the Netherlands.

However, other results went against them on Tuesday night as Romania snatched second place in the group behind the Dutch with victory over Estonia.

It was a one-sided affair in Budapest, with Andorra goalkeeper Ferran Pol kept busy in the first half by Zoltan Stieber. But Hungary’s pressure finally paid off seven minutes into the second half thanks to Nikolic, who met a cross into the area from Balazs Dzsudzsak to power a header into the top-right corner from close range. Pol came to the rescue again minutes later to fist away a drilled effort from Vladimir Koman, while Andorra’s best chance of the match was a 72nd-minute shot from Cristian Martinez Alejo which was well held by home goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly. An unfortunate own goal from Lima 11 minutes from time eventually spelled the end for the visitors, who then suffered further disappointment with the late dismissal of Moises San Nicolas for a second yellow card.
