Thanks to its breathtaking attractions, unforgettable gastronomy, and vivid atmosphere, it is easy to fall in love with Budapest. Several Hollywood stars love it, too, who frequently visit the Hungarian capital and gain memorable experiences here. Let’s see who they are and what their impression is of the Hungarian capital.

Jamie Lee Curtis

The Hollywood actress with Hungarian ancestry is extremely proud of her roots. In 2021, Jamie Lee Curtis spent a couple of months in Hungary on the occasion of filming Borderlands in Budapest. The world-famous actress fell in love with the city and also learned a few Hungarian words.

As she said: “Being a representative of the film industry and a member of a family of Hungarian descent is a great treasure for me,” adding that “the days are beautiful in Budapest“.

Arnold Schwarzenegger

The Austrian-American actor visited Budapest several times. In 2018, Schwarzenegger celebrated his 71st birthday in the Hungarian capital, which was the filming venue of the sixth instalment of the Terminator franchise. The following year, he visited Hungary again to attend the funeral of his good friend, Hungarian film producer Andy Vajna.

The Hollywood actor and former governor of California always had a positive impression of Budapest. In an interview in 2019, he even ranked the Hungarian capital above his hometown, Vienna.

“Budapest is a wonderful city. One of the most beautiful cities in the world. I used to say in the Austrian capital as well that Budapest is much better than Vienna. Which is a big word from an Austrian, isn’t it?”

Schwarzenegger also claimed Hungary as one of the best filming locations. “Hungarians behave very politely with foreign filmmakers – they do their best to please them. The film staffs are great, and the tax benefits are also favourable. They also help with everything.”

Due to his body-builder background, the actor is a frequent visitor in Budapest gyms as well. One of his favourites is Flex Gym Budapest. On the occasion of its tenth anniversary, Schwarzenegger, along with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, greeted the opening of the Budapest gym in a Facebook post two years ago.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson

The American actor, businessman, and former professional wrestler also locked the Hungarian capital in his heart. In 2013, the actor visited Budapest on the occasion of filming the action movie based on Greek mythology, Hercules: The Thracian Wars. Dwayne Johnson especially enjoyed his weeks spent in Budapest. In a Twitter post, he wrote the following compliments about the Hungarian capital, adding a photo of Budapest’s breathtaking panorama:

Scarlett Johansson

Scarlett Johansson is also one of the Hollywood stars who fell in love with Budapest during her time spent here. The actress arrived in the Hungarian capital to shoot the latest film in the Marvel film universe, Black Widow. In addition to learning a few Hungarian words, the world-famous actress also taught her American audience how to pronounce the name of the Hungarian capital correctly, reported hvg. The Hungarian lesson can be watched from 2:45.

The Travoltas

Last summer, the world-famous Hollywood actor, John Travolta, came to Budapest to visit his daughter, Elle Bleu Travolta, who was filming her first movie, Get Lost, a modern adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, in the Hungarian capital. The Hollywood star arrived in his own plane, which he drove himself, to take his beloved children, Ella and her brother, Ben, to the film set.

Ella was very impressed with the filming in Hungary.

“It was a fantastic experience! Budapest was a dream, and most importantly, I met and worked with a lot of great people.

Thank you to everyone who worked hard to make this film come to life wonderfully,” posted the young actress on her social media site.

The proud father also made a short video of the family’s trip to Budapest. The impressive video can be watched below.

But one of the most interesting things was when they spent Mila’s birthday in a bar in Budapest, where Ashton wore a T-shirt with “I love you Budapest” written on it, reported Borsonline.

Budapest attractions whose twins you can find abroad – PHOTOS

As one of the world’s most beautiful cities, the picturesque Hungarian capital is home to several must-see attractions. But did you know that some of them have twins abroad? Check them out below!

Chain Bridge in England

Although it cannot compare to the beauty of the Budapest version, the twin of the Chain Bridge can be found elsewhere in Europe. The suspension bridge beautifies the skyline of the small town of Marlow. The landmark bears a striking resemblance to the Hungarian version and for good reason,

as both versions were designed by the same architect, William T. Clark.

The original components of the Chain Bridge were actually made in England and then transported to Budapest to be assembled. Another similarity is that both bridges cross the respective country’s iconic river. The Budapest one is over the Danube while the English one is over the Thames, reported Magyarorszagom.

Photos: Pixabay (above), Youtube/SoundsandImages (below)

Considering their size, the English version is much smaller. The Hungarian Chain Bridge, which is the oldest permanent bridge on the Hungarian stretch of the Danube, is 375 metres long, while the one in England is “only” 72 metres.

Heroes’ Square in China

At first sight, the Chinese replica of the Budapest Heroes’ Square looks pretty much the same. The strangest thing about the square was that it was placed there almost in secret, with no permission or information requested from any official Hungarian authority. Global Paradise, built 23 kilometres from Shanghai, has some of the world’s most famous buildings and attractions in China. The landmarks were built to an exact replica, 90 per cent scale. As Érdekes Világ reports, Heroes’ Square is located next to the Brandenburg Gate, opposite an amphitheatre.

Photos: Wikimedia Commons (above), Youtube/Hártó László

Global Paradise has been one of China’s most important investments, and it was inaugurated in 1996. However, it has not been as successful as planned, in terms of tourism. Perhaps because of its location, perhaps because of the high entrance fees, it went bankrupt 1.5 years later. Nowadays, locals graze their animals here, among replicas of the world-famous buildings.

Hungarian Parliament building in Romania

If you would like to check every tiny detail of an architectural masterpiece, then you do not need to go further than Romania. Here you can find the miniature of the Hungarian Parliament whose construction took six months for the creator, Imre Mezei.

Photos: Pixabay (above), Facebook/Imre Mezei (below)

The Transylvanian carpenter and mason created the special model from metal, using his own traditional tools. The elaborate work aims to capture every detail of Budapest’s iconic building, including the nearly seven hundred small windows and the special roof system. The unique work of art has become a tourist attraction in Gyergyószék, Romania, reported 24.hu.

Castle of Vajdahunyad in Romania

Few may know that the fascinating castle complex in Budapest’s City Park is a replica. The original castle of Vajdahunyad is the most impressive and spectacular Medieval castle in Transylvania and the most famous tourist attraction in the region.

The impressive Gothic castle is also called “the king of castles” by Hungarian novelists.

Photos: Wikimedia Commons (above), Pixabay (below)

It preserves and proclaims the memory of six centuries of history, not only of the Hunyadi family but also of Transylvanian princes and families. This castle served as a model for the well-known Vajdahunyad Castle, built in the City Park as part of the 1896 Millennium celebrations, reported Kirándulás tippek.

Budapest in America

Did you know that the Hungarian capital has a twin city in America. The settlement that consists of seven buildings is located in Georgia and was founded by Hungarian immigrants in the late 1880s. They came at the invitation of Ralph L. Spencer, a Connecticut-born gentleman. His plan was to establish vineyards in the hills of Haralson County, seeking European immigrants with some knowledge of winemaking. The Hungarian community came from Pennsylvania where they worked in mines. Spencer’s offer was irresistible: in exchange for winemaking, they could work in an industry that reminded them of their homeland, and they would get land. By the turn of the century, some 200 families had moved to the area and named their largest settlement Budapest in homage to the Hungarian capital.

Photo: www.facebook.com/spiceofeurope/

According to Wikipédia, the decline of the once Hungarian-inhabited settlement was ultimately caused by the fact that the local people have a lot of prejudice against Hungarians regarding their way of life and their lack of English knowledge. In 1908, wine production began to decline due to the Prohibition Act in Georgia. The Hungarians, having lost their livelihoods, moved back north and continued to work in mines.

In addition to watching the slot machines, you can also touch and try them for an even more perfect guest experience. Budapest’s Pinball Museum awaits visitors from Wednesday to Sunday. In addition to daily visits, the gallery can also be rented for private events.

Museum of Sweets and Selfies

Since its inauguration in 2018, the museum is particularly popular with foreigners. Thanks to the great success, one year later, another candy and selfie museum, Bubbles, was opened nearby.

Photo: www.facebook.com/szelfimuzeum/

The colourful, fun installations were spread over 2 floors, covering a total of 400 square metres. As showy sweets also played a major role in the concept’s design, it was almost natural that the space was complete with an experiential confectionery. A student ticket for 90 minutes costs HUF 2,500, while adults can enter the selfie paradise for HUF 3,500.

Hungarian Parliament Building

The Hungarian Parliament Building is the world’s third-largest parliament building and one of the oldest legislative buildings in Europe. kinizsi castle nagyvázsony

The renovation of Kinizsi Castle has brought about a spectacular rebirth. The renovated courtyard of the castle is scheduled to open to visitors at Easter.

As we can read in 24.hu’s article, according to plans, interactive exhibitions, museum educational activities and cultural events will welcome visitors to the renewed castle in Nagyvázsony.

It will open its courtyard at Easter, and from summer the entire Kinizsi Castle will be open to the public, MTI reported.

History of the castle

The history of the castle dates back to the end of the 14th and beginning of the 15th centuries when the Vezsenyi family built a building the size of a manor house. On his estate, around 1463-64, László Vezsenyi, King Matthias’s cavalry master, built Vázsonykő Castle, which was identical to the present-day inner castle.

One of the most famous owners of the building was Paul Kinizsi. He was given the fortress by the king in 1473, after which he rebuilt and extended it. The five-storey residential tower and the second floor of the west wing were completed at this time.

Restorations

According to magyarepitok.hu, the first restoration works began in 1954 when the last occupant of the tower moved out. Archaeological excavations were carried out between 1955 and 1960.

Afterwards, archaeological, art historical and mural research in preparation for the current project began in 2018. The now completed development has given the fortress back its former appearance.

The project

As we can read in magyarepitok.hu’s article, the project of the National Heritage Protection and Development Non-profit Ltd. (NÖF – Nemzeti Örökségvédelmi Fejlesztési Nonprofit Kft.) was carried out within the framework of the National Castle Programme.

The aim was to turn the Kinizsi Castle into a historical site and a visitor centre, offering visitors a full-day programme.

Accordingly, exhibition spaces evoking the past were created on the floors of the castle, which can be visited all year round.

According to MTI, the renovated courtyard of the castle is scheduled to open to visitors at Easter – however, we have to wait a little more to be able to see the entire castle inside. Follow the castle’s Facebook page to stay updated!

Disney-tale castle reopens to visitors in this Hungarian town

After long years of reconstruction work, the beautiful Wenckheim Castle in Szabadkígyós opens to the public on Sunday, 20 March.

Renovation and history

Our previous article about the Wenckheim Castle was written when it was still closed. As we reported, the Wenckheim Castle has been renewed and upgraded as a tourist attraction within the framework of the National Castle Programme which started in 2019.

The Wenckheim manor house, located 10 kilometres from Békéscsaba and 15 kilometres from Gyula, is one of the most significant Neo-Renaissance manor houses in Hungary. It was built between 1875 and 1879 according to the design of famous Hungarian architect Miklós Ybl.

The Wenckheim Castle

The castle park was created at the same time as the castle itself was built and it remained open to the public even during the past years of reconstruction. The park has been a nature reserve since 1954.

The fairytale-like main building of the castle is decorated with turrets and loggia terraces, and a total of 365 windows, which refers to the number of days in a year. In addition, the building has 52 rooms, which is a symbol of the number of weeks in a year.

A baroque French garden with a fountain pool stretches out in front, while the extensive 25-hectare English garden is enchanted with romantic bridges and an artificial lake, as we can read in Funzine’s article.

According to Index, the castle was nationalised after World War II and later became a vocational school for agriculture and food. The ground floor was used for offices, teachers’ rooms, a library and a gym. The first floor was used for a girls’ college and the annexes for classrooms.

The former carriage house was converted into a kitchen while the stables into a dining room and the gas house into a bus garage. A new boys’ dormitory was built on the site of the hangar and a football pitch was constructed in the park clearing.

Now, an interactive exhibition is open in the renovated castle. The exhibition “Visiting the Wenckheims” recalls the times when well-known members of the aristocracy visited Szabadkígyós.

The castle is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm. However, the website of the National Heritage Development Nonprofit Ltd. (NÖF) recommends that, because of the high level of interest, visitors should plan to visit on Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday, otherwise there will be a waiting time.

The imposing Wenckheim Castle in Szabadkígyós will soon be open to the public.

The Wenckheim Castle, renewed and upgraded as a tourist attraction within the framework of the National Castle Programme, will be open to visitors from 10 am on Sunday, 20 March, after the official opening ceremony, Helló Magyar reported.

The castle is Eclectic and Neo-Renaissance in style.

A building of unparalleled beauty, it has as many windows as there are days in the year, as many rooms as there are weeks, and as many entrances as there are seasons. The castle was built between 1875 and 1879 to the designs of famous architect Miklós Ybl, and the park was created at the same time.

The main building of the castle covers an area of around 1,700 square metres, with more than 6,000 square metres of floors, of which around 4,000 will be renovated.

The castle in Békés County was consecrated on 19 July 1882.

Thanks to Count Frigyes Wenckheim and his wife, Count Krisztina Wenckheim, the most modern and luxurious castle of its time was built, and it is still admired today. The construction of the park, which also became a local landmark, began at the same time as the construction of the building. The castle park has been a nature reserve since 1954.

Interestingly, the wealthy Wenckheim family built a palace in Budapest in 1889 near Kálvin Square, and today, the magnificent building is home to the Ervin Szabó Library of Budapest.

The family lived in the castle until 1944, and from 1945 until 2011, an agricultural school was run within its walls. Major renovations had been carried out, but the castle, which is now empty, was in need of a complete renovation, which began on 10 April 2020 and is scheduled to last until spring 2022.

During the renovation, the castle was not open to the public, but the castle park was, from sunrise to sunset, free of charge.

The limestone tuff deposited from the water of the streams of the karst springs has formed a step-like formation, thanks to which the clear water that flows along in a veil offers a breathtaking view.

Rám Gorge

The gorge is of volcanic origin. Its depth exceeds 35 metres, while in some places, its width does not even reach 3 metres. The water in the rock ledge is constantly bubbling, swelling into a stream during snowmelt and heavy rains. In the gorge, between the narrow walls, a total level difference of 112 metres must be overcome by hikers climbing upwards.

Therefore, Rám Gorge is considered to be one of the most difficult hiking trails in Hungary.

However, there are ladders and handrails to help hikers, ensuring their safety. As the valley narrows, the unique, water-washed rock walls and magnificent waterfalls of Rám Gorge unfold before us. Going upwards, you immediately get consumed by the unique atmosphere of the gorge valley.

The Sea Eye of Megyer Hill

The Sea Eye of Megyer Hill is a popular place for hiking and trekking near Sárospatak. The rock walls rise 70 metres above the surface of the water, resulting in a breathtaking geological attraction. The special landscape was shaped by human hands; a mine operated here from the 15th century, and later on, the mine yard was filled with rainwater.

The trekking trail starts from the centre of Sárospatak and ends at the top of Megyer Hill where a wooden lookout tower offers a great view of Sárospatak.

Hungary’s unique Neo-Classical castle reborn after decades of decay – PHOTO GALLERY

sándor metternich castle

The Sándor-Metternich Castle can be found in the heart of the town of Bajna, about 50 kilometres north-west of Budapest. After long decades of decay, it is now back to its former glory.

As we can read on the official site of Nemzeti Örökségvédelmi Fejlesztési Nonprofit Kft. (NÖF),

“The Sándor-Metternich Mansion in Bajna currently has the appearance of a Classicist structure, but study has revealed that it has undergone multiple reconstructions.”

As Funzine reported, according to early records, on the site of the Sándor-Metternich Castle in Bajna, there was already a noble manor house at the end of the 15th century, which was acquired by the Sándor family at the end of the 17th century. Menyhért Sándor, the deputy-lieutenant of Esztergom County, had a hunting lodge built on the estate, which was soon inherited by his son, Móric Sándor.

Móric set his mind on extending and rebuilding the building, for which he commissioned one of the most famous architects of the time: the Neo-Classical castle was designed by József Hild.

According to NÖF’s website, architect József Hild drew up the plans for the hunting lodge around 1720. However, history marred the magnificent white building, and by 2016, the castle, Bajna’s main attraction, had become a crumbling haunted house.

This came to an end in 2018, when the listed building’s restoration to its original state began.

Three years later, at the end of last year, the Sándor-Metternich Castle reopened to the public, with two floors of exciting exhibitions exploring the special building’s past.

“Owing to the developments, the main building, the forecourt and the gardens of the mansion have become a high-quality event venue. Outdoor venues can be covered with a tent on request, thus becoming suitable for larger events, performances, […], chamber music concerts, family events, wedding ceremonies, or exclusive events even of international significance”, says the official site of NÖF.

What is more, they also add that the exterior and interior of the mansion may be the perfect venue for filming and thematic photography.

If this article has sparked your interest in visiting such a wonderful historical place in the countryside, check this page for the opening hours of the castle.

5 mesmerising places you need to visit in Hungary this winter

dorog in winter

Hungary is a beautiful place, full of sights worth seeing for tourists and locals alike. This is true for winter as well as for summer: snow-covered Hungary is something you do not see every day. We have collected some places you should put on your bucket list for the remaining of this winter.

Miskolctapolca

According to the town’s official site, Miskolctapolca is a typical resort town with hotels, restaurants, and spas, less than five kilometres from the centre of Miskolc. Its charm is mainly due to the natural beauty of the eastern part of the Bükk Mountains. The flora of the mountain and the climate created by the thermal springs in the area offer a unique healing and relaxing experience one should definitely not miss out on. As you can see in Csodahelyek.hu’s Facebook post above, one of their readers photographed the town recently. The snow and the sunshine give these places an unforgettable atmosphere.

Kőkapu, Zemplén Mountains

Even though the Vadászkastély (Hunting Mansion) cannot be visited due to its functioning as a hotel, we can go up to its terrace where this beautiful view welcomes us. The lake we can see from up there is called the Áfonyás-tó (Lake Blueberry). However, if you want to book a room in Kőkapu Hotel, that is also entirely possible. Check out their official website for more information. The hotel has “23 rooms equipped with all of the weekday’s convenience and awaiting all those who want to escape from the city’s noise and have romantic forest walks.”

Hímváró Lookout Tower, Boldogkőújfalu, Zemplén Mountains

Another magnificent place in the Zemplén Mountains. In the pictures above, the photographer captured a beautiful sunrise at the lookout tower. The tower is a part of Sima, a village with as few as 30 people. If you wish to visit a place where you can be all by yourself while enjoying the miracles of nature, this is the perfect choice. Go on a hike alone, with a loved one, or your whole family, this place will creep into your heart without a doubt.

Hidasi Valley, East Mecsek

As Természetjáró put it, “In the two stream valleys of the East Mecsek, we can follow waterfalls, gushing streams, and springs. From Hidasi Valley, we can climb up to Pusztabánya, where we can learn about the history of glassmaking.

The wild Takanyó gorge, surrounded by steep banks, and the lush meadows of the Mecsek crown our excursion.”

Hidasi Valley is a place that is frequently visited by hikers. It is a part of the East Mecsek Landscape Protection Area and is a highly protected place.

Hortobágy

No “most beautiful places to visit in Hungary” list is complete without the Alföld (the Great Hungarian Plain), an area that takes up 55% of the country. Hortobágy is one of the most widely known parts of Alföld. It is famous for its flora and fauna, the River Tisza, the Hortobágy National Park, and the Nine-arched Bridge, among others. Hortobágy is just as fascinating in the winter as it is during any other time of the year.

Zoo Café

“The Zoo Cafe was established in 2014 in the heart of Budapest. We have many hand-raised animals with whom we began our function with the aim that, in this rushed life where families do not have the possibility to keep their own animals in their places, we represent the relationship between humans and animals. Everybody can admire our special and interesting animals next to a coffee, a cake, a sandwich or an ice cream,” declares their website.

“With our private rooms, there is a possibility to give birthday parties, children’s parties, or other events in our cafe where the kids can get to know all of our animals through games with the help of one of our zookeepers.”

Unicorn Bistro

“We visited a Unicorn cafe in Thailand. We loved the place […]. Then I knew that with a little attention, with change and, of course, a lot of work, we can be the first in Europe to open a restaurant with such a theme.”

“I managed to open Europe’s first unicorn-themed restaurant in June. Most of our food was dreamed up by me, of course, the chefs helped make it happen. From hamburger to pasta, waffles to shakes, we’ve tested everything and offer you the best version. We thought of those who live with lactose or gluten intolerance, we also have a vegan and diet menu,” the founder of the restaurant said.

Superfly

Superfly Budapest is for those people who want to be active in their free time. It is essentially a big indoor trampoline park with foam pits and monkey bars so you can hone your acrobatics skill without needing to worry about injuries.

Cat Café

“Cat Café Budapest opened in 2013, not long after the concept of cat café arrived in Europe. Cat Café Budapest offers you a comfortable place to pet, play, and socialise with our lovely cats while relaxing with a cup of coffee. It’s a pawsome place for cat lovers to enjoy and interact with cats,” the café says about themselves.

“You can choose from our wide range of hot beverages, sodas, and alcoholic beverages, as well as cakes and sandwiches.

You also have the opportunity to organise your private events here; birthdays and the like. Our staff will be on standby, and our guidelines will help to make the most out of your visit here.”

Museum of Sweets and Selfies

The Museum of Sweets and Selfies is Europe’s first sweet and selfie museum. There are sets on two levels, in a total area of 400 m2. You can create unique images here, and you will not even know which one to share on social media. Out of the 11 different rooms, everyone can find their favourite.

“If you want to try what it’s like to lie in a tub full of money or gallop back in time on white horses and then drink your favourite coffee among meringues, this is the place for you!” They are open every day of the week, and you can choose from different ticket types. In addition, it is possible to hold events.

Now, they can be found in two locations thanks to their popularity: The Museum Of Sweets & Selfies No. 1 Origin can be found at 1061 Budapest, 43 Paulay Ede Street. The one called Museum Of Sweets & Selfies No. 2 Bubbles is at 1072 Budapest, on Rákóczi Street.

Tropicarium-Oceanarium

You might have heard of the Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden, but have you been to Budapest’s “shark zoo”? Officially, it is called the Tropicarium, and it is located in the southern corner of Buda, and the advantage of this ‘zoo’ is that it is roofed, not like the Budapest Zoo. This is an excellent activity even if the weather is gloomy. You can see sharks, stingrays, and hundreds of other fish here, along with insects, reptiles, and mammals.

There is a huge glass tunnel perfect to create mesmerising photos and videos of the sharks and fish swimming over the tunnel. There is also a pool where you can pet stingrays; they are surprisingly soft. And, for the romantic types, the tunnel can be rented for a dinner, and you can even pay a scuba diver to show a message to your significant other.

Extras

Budapest Retro Museum

While retro museums are quite common worldwide, this one seems to be worth visiting. According to the website, visitors “can patrol a Communist housing estate in a real LADA police car, see what Bertalan Farkas, the Hungarian astronaut of the Soviet-Hungarian space flight, took to space”, but they can also see what a news segment studio looked like in the past. Moreover, the museum also houses a bistro where people can go to grab something to eat or relax in a retro setting.

You can find more info about this museum in THIS article.

Museum of Illusions

The Budapest Museum of Illusions takes up 500 square metres with very interesting rooms, making it one of the largest museums of its kind in the region. The museum has an intelligent playroom where “visitors of all ages can play, compete, and learn.

The playroom stimulates learning and fun with Dilemma games, wooden puzzles, and games which stimulate cognitive abilities.” There are many rooms to explore and take pictures in. In the museum, you can experience how the Ames room, the Reversed Room, the Infinity Room, the Anti-Gravity Room, the Vortex Tunnel, the Beuchet Chair Illusion, and the Infinity Tunnel trick you.

You can read more about this museum in our previous article HERE.

The Hospital in the Rock

Visiting this collection under the Castle of Buda is an unforgettable experience. Here, you will find Hungary’s biggest wax figure collection, presenting the history of the hospital. There is a 2,300 m2 establishment under the Castle of Buda that was used during WWII and the 1956 Revolution.

It was regarded as a top-secret facility and was used as an air-force hospital. It was opened to visitors in 2008, and it has become one of the favourite sights of tourists since. Visiting the museum is only possible through guided tours, and children under the age of 6 are not allowed to enter, while it is not advised to bring children under age 12 either.

The construction of Gellért Hill’s new funicular to begin soon! – PHOTOS

funicular

With the construction of the Gellért Hill’s new funicular, a 100-year-old plan will be finally realised. Presumably, the project will be finished in the second half of 2023.

The Government Office of the Capital of Budapest has issued a new permit for the construction of the funicular planned for Gellért Hill. Accordingly, the spectacular project can continue in 2022.

Additionally, several modifications will be implemented in the technical part of the project, which will make it even more environmentally friendly than originally planned. According to the developers,

the long-awaited project will allow the complete ban of tourist buses from the surrounding roads.

Tourist buses pose a major burden to the road traffic of the district and have a negative impact on the quality of the residents’ lives.

On average, 350-400 tourist buses pass through Gellért Hill every day. Instead of buses, tourists will be able to use the new funicular.

The 300-metre-long, multi-car electric vehicle will complete the journey from the bottom of Gellért Hill to the top within 72 seconds.

The construction of the new funicular will realise a more than century-old plan. Moreover, the restriction on tourist buses will make the roads of the region safer. Consequently, also the air quality will noticeably improve.

As the Hungarian news portal Helló Magyar reports, after the occupation of the site, the landscaping and archaeological excavations will begin. These procedures will be followed by the actual construction which is expected to take 13 months.

Presumably, the new funicular on the Gellért Hill will be ready to welcome visitors in the second half of 2023.

The entrance of the funicular is planned to open from the underpass beneath the Hegyalja road. The vehicle will run underground for about 100 metres until it reaches Orom Street. From that point, it will continue over a 3-4 m high bridge structure, above the surface, to the upper station which is connected to the Citadella promenade. The cable car has the capacity to carry 50 passengers in less than 1.5 minutes, allowing it to take up to 1,200 people per hour to the top of Gellért Hill.

One of Keszthely’s biggest tourist attractions to reopen after tragedy – PHOTO GALLERY

Festetics Kastély Castle Park

One of Keszthely’s most popular tourist attractions is the Bird Park in the Helikon Castle Museum. After being forced to close at the end of November 2021, the Bird Park is teasing a reopening.

bird park keszthely

The virus

As 24.hu reported at the end of last year, Bird Park staff noticed that more and more birds were dying unexpectedly. In all cases, the presence of the H5N1 subtype of the avian influenza virus was confirmed by the laboratory of the National Food Chain Safety Office (NÉBIH).

Because of the virus, the entire flock had to be culled.

It was a huge loss for both the staff of the Bird Park and the visitors. However, Gábor Rigó, the owner of the birds, was most shocked and devastated by the death of the birds. He was incredibly close to them, he even gave some of them names.

Tragedy

He told likebalaton.hu the following:

“My life’s work has collapsed. There were birds that I had had for more than ten years, I started raising them in my own yard in Kalocsa. In 2016, I came to Keszthely with 120 birds of 22 species, and in five years, I had more than 50 species with a population of 360 birds. I always bought new specimens from the breeding stock to make the park as colourful as possible and to be able to hand-feed as many species as possible. All birds had to be destroyed…”

Despite everything, the Bird Park is now teasing a reopening. They shared the good news through Helikon Castle Museum’s Facebook page, with a video of the place.

Reopening

The park and its surroundings have been completely decontaminated, and the 30-day official closure has expired. The park will reopen in March with 30 species of birds. As Gábor Rigó shared in the video, some species have already arrived in the Bird Park.

bird park keszthely
source: https://www.helikonkastely.hu/kepekben/

“We will open with the same species of birds that visitors have seen before. I can reintroduce species from the species list, I don’t need to apply for new permits,”

says Gábor Rigó.

For the March opening, he will be able to show 30 of the previous 52 species, but he will gradually fill the stock. They can start repopulating the stock, but the new specimens they bought can only be released from the closed tents after the quarantine period is over.

bird park keszthely
source: https://www.helikonkastely.hu/kepekben/

The peacocks, the pheasants, and the partridges have already arrived, and the bird residential area is full. The staff managed to buy mature birds, so we can expect to see reproduction this year.

If you like colours and birds and maybe even colourful birds, do not miss out on visiting the Bird Park in Keszthely once it opens in March.
