Weekend traffic chaos expected in Budapest due to Ricky Martin’s concert and flooding

Budapest's iconic statue from the top of Heroes' Square removed

Budapest is bracing for a chaotic weekend as two major events collide: rising water levels from the Danube are already impacting several parts of the city, and Ricky Martin’s much-anticipated concert at Heroes’ Square on Saturday will bring additional traffic disruptions and public transport changes. These combined factors are expected to significantly affect mobility across the capital, especially in areas near the event.

Budapest to face major traffic and public transport changes

According to the Budapest Transport Center (BKK), extensive road closures and detours will be in place around Heroes’ Square in preparation for the event. BKK advises concertgoers and locals to use public transportation where possible and specifically recommends the M1 metro line, which will be operating with increased frequency throughout the weekend to help manage the crowds, SzeretlekMagyarország writes.

Starting on Thursday at 6 PM, road closures will begin along the service roads of Andrássy Avenue, between Bajza Street and Dózsa György Road. These closures will remain in effect until Sunday at 4:30 AM. However, the most significant disruptions will occur between Saturday at 10 AM and Sunday at noon, when traffic will be completely halted in the vicinity of Heroes’ Square. This will include the closure of Kós Károly Promenade, Olof Palme Promenade, and large portions of Dózsa György Road between Városligeti Fasor and Podmaniczky Street.

In addition, Andrássy Avenue itself, from Bajza Street to Dózsa György Road, will be off-limits to all traffic during this period. These closures are expected to create severe delays, especially for those who rely on these routes for their daily commute or for accessing popular areas like Városliget.

Public transport will also see widespread changes during the weekend. From Saturday at 10 AM to Sunday at noon, several bus and trolleybus routes will operate on a detour, with temporary stops replacing the usual ones in the affected areas. The 105 and 210B buses, which normally travel down Andrássy Avenue, will be rerouted to Podmaniczky Street, bypassing Bajza Street and Heroes’ Square entirely. Instead, they will stop at temporary stations along Podmaniczky Street after the Lendvay Street intersection and near Szondi Street in the direction of Buda.

Similarly, bus 20E will be rerouted via Hungária Boulevard, avoiding Heroes’ Square altogether, and buses 30, 30A, 79, and 230 will travel along alternative routes through Zichy Mihály Street, Hermina Road, and Gundel Károly Road. Passengers on these buses will need to use the stops usually served by trolleybus 72 between Dvorák Promenade and Gundel Károly Road near Heroes’ Square.

Trolleybus services will be affected as well. Both the 75 and 75A trolleybuses will detour onto Hermina Road and Gundel Károly Road, using trolleybus 72’s stops between Ajtósi Dürer Row and Heroes’ Square. In the late evening, additional detours will be in place for night buses. Bus 979, for instance, will be diverted through Városliget via Bajza Street and Damjanich Street, temporarily stopping at the usual stations served by trolleybus 70.

On Sunday, the 979 bus will operate on a shortened route, only running between Csepel, Csillagtelep, and Oktogon, meaning passengers will need to adjust their travel plans accordingly.

Given the extent of these disruptions, the BKK urges passengers to plan their journeys in advance. The BudapestGO app is highly recommended for real-time public transport updates and route planning. Not only does the app provide live information on route changes and delays, but it also allows users to purchase tickets and passes directly from their phones, streamlining the process for those navigating the city during this busy weekend.

For those travelling by car, the BKK Info website will continuously update information on road closures and detours, helping drivers find the best alternative routes to their destinations. Additionally, the BKK Info – Közút platform will offer updated road traffic information throughout the weekend to assist drivers in managing the heavy traffic conditions expected across the city.

This weekend’s disruptions serve as a reminder to travellers to allow extra time for their journeys, whether attending the Ricky Martin concert or just navigating the city. With the combination of flood-related issues and event-related closures, Budapest will likely experience significant congestion and delays throughout the weekend.

Iconic Iron Maiden to rock Budapest in 2025 as part of their 50th anniversary tour

iron maiden performance budapest 2025 concert

Iron Maiden is set to return to Budapest next year, marking another milestone performance. In May 2025, the legendary British rock band will kick off the European leg of their “Run For Your Lives” world tour at the Budapest Sportarena. This tour celebrates the 50th anniversary of the band’s founding in 1975 and will feature a setlist showcasing music from their early, career-defining decades, according to the event’s organiser, Live Nation.

Following their Budapest show on 27 May, the tour will continue across Europe, with a total of 27 performances in stadiums, arenas, and festivals. The song selection will draw from Iron Maiden’s first nine studio albums, covering everything from their 1980 debut album Iron Maiden to 1992’s Fear of the Dark, in honor of the band’s half-century of heavy metal dominance.

Fans can expect a rare treat, with the band promising to perform tracks that haven’t been played in years, and some that may never be heard live again.

Supporting Iron Maiden during this part of the tour, including the Budapest show, will be American rock band Halestorm. Iron Maiden doesn’t need to be dusted off for their anniversary – they’re currently touring under “The Future Past,” keeping them actively engaged with their fans.

Iron Maiden has performed in Hungary 14 times, Telex reports, most recently in 2022 at the Groupama Arena. Earlier this year, lead vocalist Bruce Dickinson also had a solo show at Barba Negra. Their first-ever Hungarian concert took place in 1984, drawing nearly 50,000 fans to the parking lot of the old Budapest Sports Hall.

The band’s origins

The band’s name originates from a fictional torture device, and they were formed by bassist Steve Harris in December 1975. After several lineup changes, the band’s classic lineup took shape in 1982. Between 1982 and 1986, Iron Maiden hit their peak, constantly touring with albums like The Number of the Beast, Piece of Mind, and Powerslave. Frontman Bruce Dickinson briefly left the band in 1993, replaced by Blaze Bayley, but he returned in 1999, bringing an end to a challenging period for the band.

Iron Maiden’s most recent studio album, Senjutsu, was released in 2021. The current lineup consists of Dickinson, Harris, guitarists Dave Murray, Adrian Smith, Janick Gers, and drummer Nicko McBrain, who is back after recovering from a stroke earlier this year. The band was inducted into Hollywood’s RockWalk in 2005, and with over 100 million albums sold and nearly 2,500 performances in 64 countries, they remain one of the most iconic names in rock.

The announcement was made by Andrea Mager, CEO of Szerencsejáték Plc. (Hungary’s main gambling company), during a press conference in Budapest on Wednesday. Other performers will include popular Hungarian artists Metzker Viktória, Regán Lili, and T. Danny.

Free superconcert on Heroes’ Square

Mager highlighted that the superconcert series has provided free, registration-free musical experiences for tens of thousands of people over the years. After being held at different venues, this year’s concert returns to the iconic Heroes’ Square, allowing the public to enjoy the music in a grand setting.

In addition to the entertainment, attendees can also contribute to a charitable cause by purchasing lottery tickets at the event. Proceeds from the ticket sales will be donated to the Ökumenikus Segélyszervezet (Hungarian Interchurch Aid) to support disadvantaged families, continuing the tradition of past years.

Kristóf Gáncs, Executive Director of the charity, recalled that last year’s concert raised HUF 8.5 million (EUR 21,630), which helped fund the operations of the “Safe Start Children’s House” in Szendrő. This initiative supports children from disadvantaged backgrounds from infancy onward. Gáncs also announced a new four-year strategic partnership between Szerencsejáték Plc. and the charity, with plans to launch a dedicated lottery ticket next year, the proceeds of which will directly benefit the organisation’s work.

Last year’s superconcert attracted around 50,000 attendees to Szoborpark, with an additional 15,000 people tuning in online. This year’s event celebrates the launch of Szerencsejáték Plc.’s new lottery game, Napi Mázli (Daily Luck), hence the event’s official name: “Napi Mázli Superconcert.”

The tour, featuring special guests Hollywood Undead and Sleep Theory, kicks off on 7 November in Lisbon and includes a highly anticipated stop at Budapest’s Barba Negra on 23 November.

Falling in Reverse in Hungary

Index reports that Ronnie Radke and his band, Falling in Reverse, will be touring Europe this November in support of their new album Popular Monster. The tour, named Popular Monstour II, will feature special guests Hollywood Undead and Sleep Theory. The European tour kicks off on 7 November in Lisbon, Portugal, and includes a stop at Budapest’s Barba Negra on 23 November.

About the tour

The tour will also feature the renowned Californian metal/rap rock band Hollywood Undead, who last performed in Hungary in May 2023 alongside Papa Roach. At the Falling in Reverse concert, Sleep Theory will set the atmosphere alongside Hollywood Undead’s Johnny 3 Tears. The tour, which begins in Lisbon, will make stops across Germany, France, the UK, the Czech Republic, Austria, and Poland. Although the 2024 album Popular Monster has received mixed reviews, with many tracks already released as singles, it still offers a solid experience, especially since Falling in Reverse rarely tours in Europe.

Irish melodies and unity: Paddy and the Rats’ vibrant concert at Budapest Park

Paddy and the rats hungary

On 9 August, Paddy and the Rats returned to the stage at Budapest Park to once again deliver the unparalleled energy and fun that only they can create. Following the band’s anniversary concert last year, this year’s performance was highly anticipated and, indeed, memorable for all who attended.

The concert kicked off with the classic hit “Bastards Back Home,” which immediately set the tone for the evening. After this energetic start, the band played a series of well-known tracks including “Freedom,” “One Last Ale,” “The Captain’s Dead,” “Matadora,” and “Drunken Sailor.” A particularly memorable moment occurred when the audience routinely squatted down for the initial bars of “Freedom,” only to jump up in unison during the chorus.

The audience also enjoyed the customary “pogo duel” during “The Captain’s Dead.” This interactive element has become a hallmark of the band, and the enthusiasm of the crowd was palpable.

In addition to their upbeat Irish pub-style and pirate-themed songs, the band performed slower, more melancholic pieces such as “Castaway.” These songs provided a moment for emotional recharge before the pace quickened again.

The band never forgets their former bandmate, Bernát Babicsek. A touching moment came when Bernie’s former student played his beloved teacher’s accordion in his memory. This gesture highlighted the importance of friendship and unity within the band.

Fresh Paddy and the Rats debut

During the concert, Paddy and the Rats presented their latest hit, “Vodka,” which was accompanied by a special video clip. Interestingly, the clip was made with the help of AI, adding a fresh dimension to the band’s work.

The concert was attended by children of all ages, from pre-schoolers upwards, which shows how Paddy and the Rats’ music can appeal to a wide range of people. The fantastic music and the strong sense of community contributed to a wonderful atmosphere, making everyone present feel part of a large family.

Once again, Budapest Park provided an excellent venue for the nearly one-and-a-half-hour-long performance, allowing everyone to escape the stresses of everyday life. This concert proved that Paddy and the Rats are still one of the most popular Hungarian bands, promising many more such experiences in the future.

Taylor Swift fans were left deeply disappointed after her Vienna concerts were cancelled due to a terror threat. Some fans lost money on hotels, while others undertook long journeys in vain. Hungarian fans have now started a petition to move the cancelled concerts to Budapest.

Austria’s Interior Ministry announced that two people had been arrested on suspicion of planning an attack at Taylor Swift’s Vienna concerts. Security measures were initially tightened, but the decision was ultimately made to cancel all three shows.

One fan, who was already in Vienna when the news broke, revealed to RTL that she had planned to attend all three concerts and had spent about HUF 400,000 (more than EUR 1,000) on her accommodation. Another fan said she had booked a hotel in Vienna but decided not to travel due to safety concerns, even though she couldn’t get a refund.

Vienna’s compensation

Many fans had gone to great lengths for the concerts; one drove for 17 hours, while another flew from Hawaii partly to attend.

In response to the widespread disappointment, Vienna has offered various forms of compensation, including free entry to several museums for ticket holders until 11 August. Meanwhile, Hungarian Swifties have launched a petition to bring the cancelled shows to Budapest, hoping to give the star’s fans another chance to see her perform.

Rita Ora arrives in Budapest, is taken to hospital immediately

rita ora

Rita Ora informed her fans on her social media page that after arriving in Budapest, she was hospitalised and spent the night there. She added that she has to follow the doctors’ instructions and is very sorry that she will not be able to perform on Saturday night at the Campus Festival in Debrecen.

Rita Ora concert cancelled in Debrecen

The line-up of the Campus Festival main stage had to be rearranged at the last minute: tonight’s headliner, Rita Ora, is unable to perform due to illness, Index reports.

The organisers immediately changed the evening’s programme and moved another act, the band Zenevonatival az LGT sztárjaival, originally positioned on the University of Debrecen Stage (Debreceni Egyetem Színpada), to the main stage. According to the current line-up, ByAlex és a Slepp and Magdi Rúzsa will close the programme.

András Süli, the festival’s programme director, told Index: “Around 3 PM today, Rita Ora’s management informed us that the singer, who has been in Budapest since yesterday, has been hospitalised with a serious acute problem and her condition will not allow her to perform today. Although the singer’s crew had been working on the technical preparations on the main stage of the Campus Festival since last night, unfortunately, the concert cannot take place. We will coordinate a possible make-up in the future. Rita Ora’s scheduled date will be Magdi Rúzsa’s concert.”

The singer wrote the following on her Facebook page:

“Please forgive this unexpected turn of events but sadly I will not be able to perform at Campus Fesztivál tonight. Having spent the night in hospital in Budapest, I must rest thoroughly and follow doctors orders. I am so sorry to my fans who are going to be there today and I’m truly thankful for your understanding.”

Lhamo’s music blends traditional Tibetan folk elements with modern sounds, creating a unique spiritual and meditative experience. She has released several albums and performed at prestigious festivals, concert halls, and spiritual events around the globe.

Beyond her musical career, Yungchen Lhamo is an active human rights advocate. She participates in numerous charitable and human rights organisations, dedicated to preserving Tibetan culture and identity. Popular Balaton festival is no more: contract expiry threatens future

Hungarian youth Lake Balaton Sound

The Balaton Sound festival, a paradise for electronic music lovers, was held for the 16th time in Zamárdi, Hungary this year. According to the organisers, the festival saw 100,000 visitors by Saturday, a number that appears modest compared to previous years.

Rumours about the festival’s future started circulating on the last day of the four-day event, with some suggesting this might be the last Balaton Sound in Zamárdi, Sonline reports. Vendors at the festival told some attendees that 2024 would be the final year for the popular festival. In a now-deleted Instagram video, influencer Pumped Gabo, who rose to fame through the festival, tearfully mentioned that there would be no more festivals at the “Hungarian Sea”.

At the same time, Telex has also been informed that the 2024 Balaton Sound festival was the last one. This is most likely why the organisers have not even started to schedule next year’s lineup.

The last Balaton Sound

The festival’s press chief, Viktória Vető, previously commented that they were aware of the rumours but didn’t want to address them, stating the topic was not on their agenda. When asked again after the event, the response remained the same. However, it was understood that during the latest town council meeting, which included festival organisers,

it was clearly stated that this year’s event was the last.

Zamárdi’s mayor, Gyula Csákovics, confirmed that their contract with the organisers, which allowed the festival to be held until 2024, had expired, making this the last Balaton Sound under the current agreement. He added that any new contracts would need to be discussed by the newly formed council. The contract with the municipality was structured based on the results of a public opinion poll conducted last year.

New festival in Zamárdi?

The organisers, Sziget Plc., requested to hold the festival later and paid an additional HUF 20 million on top of the agreed HUF 150 million to the town. This extra funding was used to re-asphalt a street affected by the event.

Speculation about the festival’s future also appeared on online forums, with some claiming that the Cluj-Napoca-based Untold festival might move to Zamárdi next year. However, Mayor Csákovics stated that the municipality had not received any such proposal.

A colourful programme has been put together for the Street Ball again this year. At the beginning of the evening, a workshop will give those who want to get moving the chance to learn the basics of break dancing, the new sport for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. This will be followed by a Tahitian dance demonstration, evoking the spirit of Tahiti, the venue of this year’s Olympic surfing competition.

In the second half of the French Insitute’s Street Ball, you can dance to the world music of Ötödik Évszak and the European Gypsy and Hungarian folk songs of Romano Glaszo. The evening will end with a rousing DJ set by Daniel Moritz. The French Bistro will offer refreshments and snacks to Street Ball participants.

Programme

18.00–19.00: break dance workshop

  • France is the hip-hop capital of the world, and it’s no coincidence that break dancing will be an official sport at the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris. With record sales in excess of 130 million copies, record-breaking tours and a string of chart-topping hits, the group formed in the early nineties and went down in world pop history as the most successful and best-selling boy band of all time.

Backstreet Boys signed one of the biggest record deals ever in 1999, worth USD 60 million. They received five Grammy nominations and numerous awards, including Billboard Awards, MTV Video Music Awards, American Music Awards, RIAA Awards, People’s Choice Awards and an honorary star on the iconic Hollywood Walk.

Nick Carter was just 12 years old when he joined the iconic boy band Backstreet Boys as the youngest singer. The group has toured the world to date, with sold-out shows marking the boys’ journey around the world. But Carter has also enjoyed considerable solo success.

In 2002, he launched his solo career with his debut album, Now or Never, which immediately reached the Billboard 200 chart and gold in the US, Japan and Canada.

Since then, Nick Carter has released two more solo albums, “I’m Taking Off” in 2012 and “All American” in 2016. Her 2023 single “Hurts to Love You” has charted in several countries and has also reached the top of the charts in the US and Canada.

In 2023, Carter toured with the Backstreet Boys, but after 7 years, he went solo again. The “Who I Am” Tour kicked off in October in the US, followed by three new solo singles “Superman”, “Made For Us” and “Never Break My Heart (Not Again)”.

The “Who I Am” tour will continue in 2024, in Asia, Canada, USA and Europe, and to the great delight of Hungarian fans, in Hungary too, on 1 August in Budapest, at the Vasúttörténeti Park. Tickets went on sale on 28 June at 10 AM at www.nickcarter.hu.
