Hungary and the 1954 World Cup: a history to remember

football, golden team, Puskás, sport

It is impossible to talk about great soccer teams without mentioning the Hungary of the 1950s. Today, the Hungarian team will rarely appear among the favorites when it comes to the soccer Vegas odds, but the nation played a huge role in the history of soccer.

If the blessed 1954 World Cup had been in Hungarian hands, perhaps soccer in the country could be different nowadays. And if the political conflicts between Hungary and USSR hadn’t existed, maybe the country would have had the chance to hold on to its stars for longer.

Even without a World Cup title, Hungary made history. Puskás, Kocsis, Hidegkuti, and company put on so many shows, that soccer will never forget that stupendous team, nicknamed the Magyar Magicians, who innovated the sport with the “WW” formation (which would be the embryo of Brazil’s 4-2-4 in the 1958 World Cup) and stunned countless opponents (including Brazil), among them the superb England, who beat them six times at Wembley Stadium.

It’s time to remember the great history of Hungary and the 1954 World Cup.

The 1954 World Cup would be marked as the one with the highest goal average in history: an absurd 5.4 goals per game! That’s right! There were 140 goals in 26 games! This astronomical goal average was benefited, of course, by Hungary.

In the first round, two victories: 9-0 against South Korea and 8-3 against Germany. They scored 17 goals in two games. Surreal? Not for Puskás, Kocsis, and Hidegkuti, who were flying high at that World Cup.

In the quarter-finals, Hungary faced Brazil in a game that would become the most violent ever recorded in World Cups at the time and which became known as the “Battle of Bern”.

There were three red cards (all recorded in the World Cup, in a single match!) and a lot of fisticuffs. In the end, Hungarian soccer prevailed, beating Brazil 4-2.

In the semifinal, an epic game against Uruguay. The match was well fought, showing the quality of the Uruguayans and scaring the Magyars a little.

After a 2-2 draw in normal time, however, Hungary showed more power of precision and scored two goals: 4-2 to Hungary. The team was in the final. It was time for the coronation of the greatest squad on the planet. It was, were it not for the Germans…

After experiencing the “Battle of Berne”, Hungary had to witness another feat in the Swiss city – a miracle. The world’s most feared and formidable team inexplicably succumbed to Fritz Walter’s Germany and lost 3-2. How could a team like that, full of stars, lose a World Cup that was won? Several factors can explain it.

In the first round, Germany was beaten by Hungary, remember? Yes, but in that game the Germans spared five starters in the defeat to the Magyars, thinking about the next game. In other words, Hungary did not face the full strength of the Germans.

Another point was that in that first-round match, German defender Liebrich made a hard tackle on Hungary’s biggest star, Puskás. The player left the field injured in the first half, missed the following matches, and played the final “injured”.

Another point: Hungary came from a tough match against Uruguay, which was only decided in extra time, and was visibly tired. Germany, on the other hand, came from an easy 6-1 victory over Austria.

The last point: The final match was played under a deluge, a torrential downpour. This spoiled the touch-and-go soccer of the Magyars, and the strength and sturdiness of the Germans prevailed.

A small unproven point is that at halftime, with the match tied 2-2 and the Germans in the dressing room, Adi Dassler, founder of the Adidas brand, changed the cleats on the players’ boots so that they would slip less. True or not, the fact is that Germany was much better prepared for that game than the magical Hungarians.

It was Hungary’s first defeat after 32 matches, from June 1950 until the fateful July 4th, 1954. A record. The team also set the following records, still unmatched in World Cups:

  • Most goals scored in a single Cup: 27 goals;
  • Highest average number of goals scored in a single Cup: 5.4 goals per game;
  • Highest goal difference in a single Cup: +17 goals;
  • Top scorer with the highest average number of goals in a single Cup: Kocsis, with 2.2 goals per game – 11 goals in 5 games

Defeat in the final of a World Cup that had almost been won was a blow to Hungary. The team would never be the same again and never repeat the resounding success of 1954 and even earlier World Cups.

Players retired from the national team, and the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 and the various conflicts in the country due to Soviet influence culminated at the end of the magic. Never again had the world seen a team as deadly in attack as that of Hungary.

Hungary priced at 250/1 to win Euro 2024

Hungary vs Italy

While most of the eyes of the footballing world will be on the World Cup next month, in Hungary, the international focus is on two summer’s time.

A fourth-placed finish in the UEFA World Cup Qualifying Group I saw Hungary fail to qualify for next month’s tournament in Qatar. They missed out on a Play-Off place by just three points to Group I runners-up Poland, who went on to book their place at the World Cup Finals.

Despite the major disappointment, the nation will be buoyed by their recent performances in the UEFA Nations League. Drawn into an extremely difficult group alongside England, Italy and Germany, many anticipated Hungary being relegated to League B.

However, that fate belonged to England, who Hungary thrashed 4-0 at Molineux during the summer. Marco Rossi’s team came within a whisker of winning Group A3 and progressing to the Nations League Finals, eventually finishing second behind only Italy.

Hungary only had to avoid defeat at home to the Italians to progress to the final four in the summer of 2023, but a 2-0 defeat saw the reigning European Champions snatch their place at the death. While that result came with enormous disappointment, the Nations League campaign as a whole showed tremendous progression from a team who were beaten 4-0 at home to England less than a year earlier.

As such, the focus will now be on the qualifying campaign for the 2024 European Championships which start in March next year. Their performances in the Nations League led to them being top seeds for Euro 2024 qualifying as they were drawn alongside Serbia, Montenegro, Bulgaria and Lithuania — a group that you would expect them to qualify from.

The top two teams from each group will qualify for the European Championship after the tournament was expanded to 32 teams for the first time in 2016. They face Luxembourg and Greece in friendlies in November in their final fixtures before their European Championship Qualifying campaign begins.

Hungary performed admirably at Euro 2020 given the expectations surrounding them, having put in a group with Portugal, France and Germany. While many experts had expected them to lose all three matches, they proved to be extremely competitive in all of their matches and held France and Germany to draws.

Those interested in betting on Hungary’s fortunes at the Euros would be wise to get them in early given the current value. Nowadays, there is the option to bet on anything online when it comes to sports, from offshore NBA lines to chess tournaments.

A number of soccer betting sites have already begun offering odds on the winner of Euro 2024, despite a ball not even being kicked in qualifying as of yet. One of those is BetVictor, who have Hungary best-priced at 250/1 at the time of writing to pull off an upset and become crowned European champions.

Their showings against England and Germany in particular, as well as their performances at Euro 2020, would suggest that is a price with plenty of value. They are ranked alongside teams such as Finland and Romania at 250/1, both of whom aren’t seeded in qualifying.

Hungary’s squad boasts one of the most promising attacking midfielders in Europe in Dominik Szoboszlai, who has scored six goals in 26 caps for his country at the age of 22. He is also joined in the squad by RB Leipzig teammates Peter Gulasci and Willi Orban.

Should Hungary continue their current form and secure their place at Euro 2024 in a convincing fashion, expect this 250/1 price to crash significantly ahead of the tournament in Germany.

Budapest instead of Seattle

Everyone has a basic knowledge of geography. However, the following map can put latitude into context. This map replaces the familiar European castles with cities in Europe and North Africa, and does so with the replaced city at the same latitude.

Thus, in Spain, Barcelona is replaced by Beijing, and in Italy, Palermo is replaced by San Francisco on the Sicilian peninsula. England’s capital, London, is replaced by Edmonton, while Yakutsk is replaced by Norway. In Hungary, no other city has been replaced. And the latitude of Seattle is almost the same as Budapest.

There are no cities on this map. Here, you can see the countries of Europe. However, within the country borders you can see one of the iconic paintings of that country.

Within the borders of Italy, we are greeted by the Mona Lisa, in Germany by Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog, in Greece by Venus de Milo, and in Hungary by The Old Fisherman. It was painted by Tivadar Kosztka Csontváry around 1902.

Hungarian national team coach Rossi assessed the EURO 2024 qualification draw

rossi

Hungary has been drawn in a five-team qualifying group for the 2024 European Championship, with four opponents exclusively from Central and Eastern Europe.

According to MLSZ, Marco Rossi’s squad will seek positive results against Serbia, Montenegro, Bulgaria and Lithuania as they aim to reach their third successive European Championship finals, due to take place in Germany.

Hungary will have good memories of recent matches against Serbia and Bulgaria, the former suffering at the hands of striker Norbert Könyves in Belgrade in 2019 and the latter succumbing in Sofia in 2020 during Hungary’s successful journey to a memorable Euro 2020 tournament.

“It could have been a more difficult group, but naturally I could have imagined an easier one too”, Marco Rossi admitted after the draw in Frankfurt.

“No one should be complacent just because we were drawn from the pot of top seeds. Serbia are ahead of us in the world rankings and have qualified for the World Cup, while we know Bulgaria and Montenegro from recent meetings and we can’t judge them on those results, because a lot can change in 2-3 years in today’s football. Difficult matches await us; we’ll need to take each match as they come and get the best out of ourselves in every game in order to be successful”.

The Champions League winner Brazilian came to Budapest at the invitation of the FITEQ (International Teqball Federation/Nemzetközi Teqball Szövetség) to participate in the European Teqball Tour organised in Budapest between 29 September and 2 October. Ronaldinho is the ambassador of the new sport aspiring to become part of the Olympic Games soon.

After arriving in Budapest, Ronaldinho posted a video showing that his accommodation is close to the Danube on the Buda side of the capital. The Brazilian star probably learned about the Hungarian parliament and some other iconic buildings of Budapest because somebody is gesturing toward those on the recording.

UEFA NL: Hungary finished in second place, ahead of Germany and England – PHOTOS

Hungary vs Italy UEFA Nations League

Marco Rossi’s side finished behind tonight’s victors in Group C of Nations League Division 1 after a superb goalkeeping performance from Gianluigi Donnarumma inspired visitors Italy to a 2-0 victory in Budapest tonight and therefore qualification as group winners for the final four next summer.

Before this last round of the Nations League group stage, Hungary were top with ten points from five matches with second-placed Italy on eight points, so the visitors needed to win here in Budapest to reach the final four of the tournament, while even a draw would have been enough for the hosts to win the group. Hungary lost 2-1 to Italy in Cesena in June, but since then had won away against England and Germany, so they entered this game in the Puskás Arena full of confidence, MLSZ said.

Hungary head coach Marco Rossi made only one change from Friday’s victorious lineup against Germany, Loic Nego replacing Dániel Gazdag in the attacking trio alongside Ádám Szalai and Dominik Szoboszlai, while behind them András Schäfer and Ádám Nagy lined up in the middle, Attila Fiola and Milos Kerkez played on the two wings, Ádám Lang, Willi Orbán and Attila Szalai comprised the defensive three and Péter Gulácsi in goal.

The match’s first opportunity came the home team’s way, Dominik Szoboszlai lining up a free kick from 22 metres in just the second minute, but his shot bounced off the wall. Italy then wasted several opportunities in a short time, Attila Szalai clearing the ball from under his own crossbar in the fifth minute. Much of the first half was dominated by the away side and they took a 27th-minute lead when Giacomo Raspadori took advantage of Ádám Nagy’s loose pass and scored from close range.

Federico Dimarco almost doubled Italy’s lead five minutes later, only for his rasping shot to fly just wide of Gulácsi’s left post, and then it was Hungary’s turn to threaten, Szoboszlai first seeing Orbán unable to convert his cross from a free-kick before the RB Leipzig playmaker tested Donnarumma himself with a shot that was well saved.

Both teams made a change at the half-time break, Callum Styles replacing Ádám Nagy in Hungary’s midfield and it very nearly paid early dividends when, in the 50th minute, Nego, Szoboszlai, Styles, and Ádám Szalai all shot at goal from various distances, but Donnarumma and his defenders somehow combined to deny the hosts. Rossi’s side would rue that profligacy just two minutes later when Dimarco finished off a slick move to hand his country a two-goal cushion.

Another two minutes later and Donnarumma again came to the fore to brilliantly repel Styles’ close-range header and the same player was denied in the 63rd minute when his shot deflected off an Italian defender, but Donnarumma produced yet another save. Hungary were clearly on top in this period of the game, regaining possession high up and keeping the opponent’s goal under pressure.

In the 75th minute, Ádám Szalai, making his final appearance in international football, was replaced by Ádám Martin but more fresh legs failed to break down a stoic and experienced Italy defence.

Italy, therefore, prevailed 2-0 and win the group by a single point, so they will progress to next summer’s Nations League semi-finals. Hungary finishes in second place with 10 points, ahead of both the German and English national teams. The year isn’t over yet though and Marco Rossi’s team still have two more fixtures in 2022, both in November when they’ll play away to Luxembourg and then at home to Greece.

Budapest’s traffic to be paralyzed Monday evening – details here

Budapest traffic changes

The last group match of the Hungarian football team organized in Budapest’s Puskás Aréna will have a considerable consequence on the traffic of the Hungarian capital. Below you may read the details about the changes.

On Friday, the Hungarian football team managed to defeat Germany in the previous round of the UEFA Nations League. The miraculous victory means that if Hungary wins tomorrow evening in Budapest against Italy, it can get into the finals of the international football tournament. As a result, Hungarian football could win something after long decades of annoying failures.

However, defeating the opponent for Marco Rossi’s team will not be a piece of cake. Italy is the current European champion, and Hungary cannot suffer a defeat from the Gli Azzurri in the last group match of the A division in the UEFA Nations League. Since Budapest’s Puskás Aréna hosts the match, traffic will change considerably on Monday around the stadium.

The Budapest Transport Centre’s statement highlighted that all fans should use public transport to get to the stadium. That is because there will be only a limited number of parking places there. To help fans do so, subways 2 and 4 and tram nr 1 will commute more frequently, index.hu reported.

All buses commuting on Thököly street will stop at the Reiner Frigyes park and the Thököly út/Stefánia út bus stops between 5 pm and 11.30 pm. Bus line nr 30 will commute in both directions between 6.45 pm and 11.30 pm and will not touch the Verseny utca bus stop.

Trolley bus nr 75 will commute on an extended route reaching even the Eastern Railway Station on the line of 79M. Trolley bus nr 77 will go on the Hungária körút instead of the Stefánia út.

The area around the Puskás Aréna will be closed for cars from 6.45 pm until 11.30 pm. These are the sections affected:

  • Dózsa György út between the Thököly út and the Kerepesi út
  • Stefánia út between the Thököly út and the Hungária körút
  • Ifjúság út
  • Verseny utca
  • Istvánmezei út

Hungarian football fans vs climate activits

A group of Fridays for Future activists met the Hungarian football fans on the streets of Leipzig, Germany, yesterday. They started yelling at each other, so the police had to intervene. Check out our video below.

The Hungarian team played the last but one UEFA Nations League match in Germany yesterday and won against the three-time world champion. Thus, the team has a chance to win the tournament. That would mean the first international success for Hungarian football in long decades.

Of course, thousands of fans accompanied the national 11 to Germany, who marched together to the stadium after arriving in Leipzig. They sang and shouted slogans all along the way. A group of them even ran into a climate demonstration where the activists of the Fridays for Future were present.

Here is how Hungary’s men football team defeated Germany

Yet another inventive and courageous performance from Marco Rossi’s Hungary men resulted in a 1-0 victory against Germany in Leipzig on Friday evening, Ádám Szalai’s spectacular first-half goal proving enough to keep his side one point clear top of the Nations League Division 1 group with just a home fixture against Italy to come on Monday.

Captain Szalai inspires Hungary to victory in Germany

It was a largely familiar lineup that head coach Marco Rossi selected for this penultimate group-stage match in front of nearly 40,000 spectators in Germany, Péter Gulácsi in goal behind a back three of Ádám Lang, Willi Orbán and Attila Szalai with Attila Fiola at right wing-back and 18 year-old debutant Milos Kerkez on the left. András Schäfer, Ádám Nagy and Dániel Gazdag made up a three-man midfield with Szoboszlai supporting lone striker and team captain Ádám Szalai upfront.

First blood was drawn by the visitors when Szalai artfully used his right heel to flick Szoboszlai’s outswinging corner from the left into the far-right side of the German goal in the 17th minute. Gazdag and Germany’s Thomas Műller both saw efforts saved before the half-time whistle was blown. The second half was predictably characterised by German pressure, Müller seeing a goal disallowed and Timo Werner and Joshua Kimmich both being denied by Gulácsi. Hungary weren’t afraid to seek a second goal though, substitute Ádám Martin – on for his striking colleague Szalai – testing home-team goalkeeper Marc ter Stegen and the latter also proving equal to László Kleinheisler’s late effort.

There were to be no further changes to the scoreline though and thus Gulácsi, Orbán and Szoboszlai were able to celebrate a momentous victory in the stadium they play their club football in for RB Leipzig. The joy on every Hungarian face at the end was not only due this latest amazing triumph under Rossi, Hungary’s first in a competitive match against Gerany since 1954, but also because Italy’s win over England in Milan at the same time means that Hungary have secured their place in the top tier of the tournament’s next edition and can even finish top of this group if they avoid defeat against Italy in the Puskás Aréna on Monday. HERE you may watch the match highlights.

Marco Rossi: I’m grateful to the players

Hungary’s head coach spoke in particuarly glowing terms about Ádám Szalai, his striker and captain who will retire from international football next week.

The Hungarian national team produced yet another incredible feat this year, this time defeating Germany away from home and thereby securing their stay in the top tier of the Nations League.

In his post-match interview, Marco Rossi praised all of his players, but singled out Ádám Szalai who scored the winning goal.

teqball ronaldinho
Read alsoRonaldinho is coming to Budapest in October!

We did a great job in the first half and then in the second half we were cornered by the Germans and had to defend very deep, even as the players tired. Ádám Szalai did a great defensive job; he occupied Kimmich for fifty minutes so that the German couldn’t put us in difficult situations with dangerous passes, and thanks to that, we were also able to conserve our strength more. With Ádám, exactly what I hoped for happened before the match. I told the players that the last two matches will remain in their memories for ever, so I want them to remember these matches for the right reasons. His goal here against Germany has made this farewell even more magnificent. Ádám is a player who, during his career, has been held in much higher esteem abroad than in Hungary. He deserves all the praise possible for his performance today – in addition to his goal, he did an amazing defensive job and sacrificed a lot for the sake of success,” Rossi explained.

A special match is now on the horizon for Marco Rossi, because Hungary can now win their Nations League group with victory or a draw against his home country, Italy.

Monday’s match against Italy will be a special match for me and I am happy that we have secured at least second place with this success. After five rounds, we have ten points, which no one expected of us beforehand, so I am very grateful to the players for their efforts,” Rossi added.

Marco Rossi, the head coach of the Hungarian football team, said before the match that it would be abnormal to win against the three-time world champion Germany. That is what happened in Leipzig today evening. Thanks to the victory, Hungary might have a chance to win the UEFA Nations League next spring. Here are the details.

A miraculous victory over Germany

According to index.hu, the German journalist reporting about the match said that the Nationalelf consists of world-class players. But as a team, they are not that good. However, everybody expected a Hungarian defeat today in Leipzig, even though Hungary played a draw with Germany in Budapest in July.

Marco Rossi, the head coach of the Hungarian team, called people’s expectations about a victory impossible. However, he added they would do their best to make the Hungarian fans proud. And the fans were very enthusiastic before the match. Check out some photos below of how they marched together to the stadium after arriving in Leipzig:

Szalai, the hero

The Hungarian goal was scored by midfielder Ádám Szalai in the 18th minute. Szalai announced this Monday that the match against Italy in the next UEFA Nations League on 26 September will be his last as a national team member. No one could wish for a better farewell from the fans and the team than scoring the winning goal in the last but one match. Here is Szalai’s goal:

Hungary’s victory might mean a lot. Since Italy defeated England, Hungary needs to defeat Italy next Monday to secure its place in the UEFA Nations League finals. However, there is a chance that the Hungarian football team might win an international football tournament after decades of annoying failures next spring.
What’s more, it is already certain that Hungary will continue in the A division in the next UEFA Nations League tournament. Here are some photos of the match:

Four consuls will help Hungarian football fans today in Leipzig, Germany

Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó ordered four Hungarian consuls in Germany to accompany and aid Hungarian spectators arriving to watch the Hungary-Germany Champions League match in the city, the minister said.

Szijjártó said in a video that the consuls will be working within the Red Bull Arena during the match and will answer the phone to a Hungarian number throughout to help fans “who might get in trouble”, Szijjártó said. The Munich Consulate-General and the Berlin Embassy will be on 24-hour duty, he said.

The Hungarian national team will play the Nationalelf from 8.45pm on Friday.

In June 2021, German police detained 18 Hungarians on the day of a European championship qualifier between Hungary and Germany.

Before their Nations League match away against Germany, both Marco Rossi and András Schäfer discussed the retirement of Ádám Szalai, and the Union Berlin midfielder revealed that many of his club’s fans will be rooting for the Hungarian national team on Friday.

Hungary’s men’s national team arrived in Leipzig on Thursday afternoon and almost immediately the team’s official pre-match press conference took place, Rossi first being asked about the retirement of Ádám Szalai by waiting journalists:

“The situation regarding Ádám Szalai has always been a bit special. Everyone has a good relationship with our captain so it isn’t easy to say goodbye to him, but such is life. All our players want to give Ádám a nice farewell gift; a good game and a good result”.

After these two matches, the national team’s head coach admitted that his side had had much less time to prepare for two very difficult opponents than for their previous fixtures at the the start of the summer.

teqball ronaldinho
Read alsoRonaldinho is coming to Budapest in October!

“We are missing several players, but we are not focusing on absentees, but on those who are with us. I feel that the few days we’ve had have been successful. Both Germany and Italy are aiming to win this group and their fate is still in their own hands. It will be tough for us, but we’re prepared. Our aim is always to come off the pitch having done everything we can to give a good performance. However, the team should not be expected to score points against Germany or Italy. A very difficult assignment awaits us on Friday in Leipzig and now I just want to focus on that; I don’t want to be updated about the scoreline in the England-Italy match being played at the same time”.

Marco Rossi also emphasised as well that the team has to keep its feet on the ground, and for him it would be a good result at the end of the group stage if Hungary could remain in division 1 of the Nations League: “In both matches, we want to show the best of ourselves and leave the pitch in such a way that our fans can be proud of us!”

Alongside Rossi was András Schäfer who scored against Germany at last summer’s European Championship, a memory which is of course still a particularly fond one for him.

“I’m very happy to come back to Germany, because almost my whole life has changed since I scored that goal in Munich at last summer’s Euros. With the retirement of Ádám Szalai, the team is losing a very valuable player and personality, but I don’t want to talk about him in a negative context, but rather I’d like to enjoy the last two matches with him,” Schäfer explained.

The Union Berlin midfielder also said that many of his club’s fans had told him that they would be supporting the Hungarian national team on Friday:

“It’s an advantage that I play in a higher-ranked league every week, but which league we are in is not so important from the point of view of this match, because a national team match is always different from a round of league fixtues. I don’t want to think about points calculations; staying in this division is our primary goal and if we succeed, then we can dream bigger,” Schäfer concluded.

The Germany squad:

Goalkeepers: Oliver Baumann (Hoffenheim), Marc-André ter Stegen (Barcelona), Kevin Trapp (Eintracht Frankfurt)

Defenders: Armel Bella-Kotchap (Southampton), Matthias Ginter (Freiburg), Robin Gosens (Internazionale), Thilo Kehrer (West Ham United), David Raum (RB Leipzig), Antonio Rüdiger (Real Madrid), Nico Schlotterbeck (Borussia Dortmund), Niklas Süle (Borussia Dortmund)

Ferencváros’ perfect UEFA Europa League start continues in Monaco

ferencváros hungary football club

Hungarian champions Ferencváros’ defeat to Qarabag in UEFA Champions League qualifying last month was seen as a catastrophe. The Budapest-based club defeated Dinamo Zagreb, Djurgårdens, Celtic, and Molde en route to the Champions League group stages back in 2020/21, and were hoping to repeat the feat this season. Those hopes were stopped in their tracks by Azerbaijan’s champions. However, Stanislav Cherchesov’s side are making amends in the Europa League instead. Online bookmakers such as 888Sport, which provides betting and free offers on European football, hadn’t tipped the Zöld Sasok to pull up any trees in the competition, but after two wins in as many matches, they currently sit atop of Group H.

After the group stage draw was made earlier this month, fans of Ferencváros could be forgiven for expecting a disappointing Europe campaign. They were drawn against two fellow champions, Red Star Belgrade and Turkish champions Trabzonspor. To make matters worse, they were also drawn against French giants AS Monaco. But things couldn’t have started any better.

The perfect start

On matchday one, the Hungarians were already on cloud nine. A first-half brace from Tokmac Nguen as well as Adam Traore’s strike gave the hosts a 3-1 lead at halftime over Trabzonspor. And despite the visitors pulling a goal back in the second half, it was Ferencváros who ran out worthy 3-2 winners. A bigger test was awaiting on the horizon though, with a trip to the French Riviera.

Matchday two brought about a trip to the principality of Monaco. Philippe Clement’s AS Monaco impressed in Ligue 1 last season. They held off a late charge from Rennes and Nice to secure third place in the French top flight and a spot in the Champions League qualifiers. They were stunned in qualifying for the second consecutive year, however, losing out 4-3 on aggregate to PSV Eindhoven.

They too made up for that disappointment in the Europa League though, winning 1-0 in the cauldron that is Red Star Belgrade’s Rajko Mitic Stadium. They were hoping to build on that at home to Ferencváros and entered the fixture as strong favorites. Despite dominating for long periods, however, the hosts couldn’t find the breakthrough. That opened the door for the visitors to steal all three points, and they did exactly that, with Hungarian midfielder Bálint Vécsei scoring the winner ten minutes from time.

PHOTOS: Wizz Air left around 150 Hungarian football fans in France

Fradi football fans Wizz Air France

Fradi, the reigning champion and one of the most prestigious Hungarian football clubs, played the second matchday of the Europa League group stage against AS Monaco on Thursday evening. Of course, many fans travelled there with their club, and their effort was not in vain. Fradi defeated the home team 0 to 1. But many fans could not travel home because of the Hungarian budget airline Wizz Air. Below, you may read the details.

Football fans in panic

At least one hundred Hungarian fans were stuck in Monaco, one of the world’s most expensive places after their flight was cancelled. The reason is the nationwide strike of airport employees in France. Interestingly, today even the railway workers joined the strike.

A fan talking to csakfoci.hu, a Hungarian football news website, said that his family called him during halftime telling him their flight was cancelled due to the strike. There were two kinds of supporters in the match: the “B-centre” had the radicals while other fans occupied seats in various parts of the stadium. Panic started among the radicals in the heat of the match. They feared they would not be able to get home, so they started to communicate on Facebook, helping each other with information, and travel options.

Here are some photos of the Fradi football fans in Monaco marching on the match day to the stadium:

Wizz Air did not provide proper help

Based on his estimate, around 100-150 fans could not fly back to Hungary that night with their Wizz Air plane.

“We came out with the Wednesday flight of Wizz Air together with many Fradi supporters. Originally, we would have travelled back on Friday, but the airline offered a ticket only for Monday, and we would have to pay for our accommodation”, he said. The situation was chaotic, everybody wanted to get home that night, but they could only book tickets for 1,000-1,400 EUR per person. Fradi fans were happy they won and tried to help those stuck in Monaco, the victim added.

He said some travelled to Genova by train and then continued their journey to Bologna to watch the home team’s Saturday Serie A match. Afterwards, they will travel to Rome, heading back to Budapest from the Italian capital.

However, most people did not calculate the chaos and did not prepare to remain in Monaco, so they are without proper accommodation. That is partly because prices in Monaco are much higher than in Hungary.

Hungary Men to play important match on same day as World Cup kick-off

rsz_hungary_football_team_match

Marco Rossi’s men’s national team will play its last home match of the year on 20 November against Greece in the Puskás Arena, three days after travelling to Luxembourg for another friendly match.

The Hungarian national team will close the year of 2022 against teams in the C league of the Nations League. Our first opponent, Luxembourg, are currently second in their group behind Turkey, ahead of the Faroe Islands and Lithuania. Several footballers from the Luxembourg national team play in the German Bundesliga, but there are also players from Spartak Moscow and the Dutch league too.

The last time the two countries played was on November 2017, also in Luxembourg. It wasn’t a good day for us, a 2-1 loss with Nemanja Nikolic scoring our only goal. From the team at that time, which was managed by Zoltán Szélesi as interim head coach, today only Ádám Nagy and Roland Sallai are still in the setup. Luc Holtz, Luxembourg’s head coach, has been in charge since August 2010 and he is due to lead his team in their 12th match against Hungary, the current record standing at 10 wins for Hungary until that most recent encounter.

The last time we faced Greece was four years ago, when they were one of our ’C’ League group opponents in the first edition of the Nations League. By that time in autumn 2018, Marco Rossi was already in charge of the national team which won 2-1 at home with goals from Roland Sallai and László Kleinheisler, a month before losing 1-0 in Greece in October. Despite the defeat, Rossi was for a long time of the opinion that that latter match was the best his team had played under him. It is interesting to note that Hungary and Greece were drawn in the same group in the qualifiers for both the 2008 and 2016 European Championships.

Greece currently top their group in League ‘C’ of the Nations League, with two matches to go before the end of the initial stages, a six-point lead meaning they are comfortably ahead in a group which also includes Kosovo, Northern Ireland and Cyprus. Most of their players play in the English, German, Dutch, Turkish and Greek leagues, which means it will be a tough task for Hungary to improve their record against them, one which currently stands at five wins and six draws from 21 matches.

“Our team is able to spend such little time together each yeat, since the club calendar is so busy both at domestically and in European competition, so every extra day spent together is of particular importance. From this point of view, the unity in November will also be important, and it will provide an excellent opportunity to take a look at those young players who have been knocking on the door of the full men’s team for some time – if they continue to work and perform properly, they can soon be regular members of the squad. We want to see what they are capable of and where they are internationally when playing against other adult national teams”, Marco Rossi told mlsz.hu.

Luxembourg v Hungary in the Stade de Luxembourg

Sunday 20 November, 2022

Hungary v Greece in the Puskás Arena

The match on 20 November coincides with the first day of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. It is permissable to organise friendly matches on the day of the opening match of the World Cup because FIFA only recently brought the first match of the World Cup forward one day earlier.

Hungarian FM praises Hungarian football achievements

Thanks to hard work and resilience, Hungarian football is again cause for pride, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjárto said on Thursday, marking the 25th death anniversary of Olympic gold medalist football player Zoltán Czibor.

Czibor (1929-1997) played in Hungary’s legendary Golden Team and won and Olympic gold, World Cup silver and European Cup gold with them. He emigrated in 1956.

The foreign ministry’s statement cited Szijjártó as saying that the “football geniuses forced into exile by the Communist regime … had a large role in making the Hungarian nation well-known and well-loved worldwide.”

In recent times, “Hungary’s national team has become a national cause again”, thanks to the government’s hard work and “defying the opposition,” he said. The past three years have seen the completion of a cutting-edge stadium, the Puskás Arena in Budapest, and “excellent” achievements in reaching the European Championship and the Nations League, he added.

Hungary’s Wizz Air aims to be the dominant passenger carrier for the Qatar FIFA World Cup

Wizz Air Hungary

Qatar’s airports are not suitable to welcome millions of guests for this year’s football world cup. Therefore, they will need help from nearby airports. One is the Al Maktoum International Airport at Dubai World Central, or DWC, where the number of airlines buying extra slots is rising. One of those companies is Hungary’s Wizz Air, which aims to have its share of the increasing passenger traffic.

If you search Qatar on the maps of the Persian Gulf, it becomes clear that the gulf state is on a peninsula and is only reachable from Saudi Arabia. During the football world cup this autumn/winter, millions of guests are expected to arrive to watch the matches in Qatar. Of course, the small state’s airports are not suitable to welcome that many people, so they will need help from nearby cities and countries.

One of the possible airports in the neighbourhood is the Al Maktoum International Airport at Dubai World Central or DWC. Not surprisingly, the number of airlines buying extra slots at the DWC is rising. One of those companies is Hungary’s Wizz Air, which they call Europe’s fastest-growing airline. Now it seems they would like to have their share of the increasing passenger traffic in the gulf region.

According to marketwatch.com, the number of passengers at the Dubai International Airport surged in the first six months of 2022. They expect that the coming football world cup will further boost traffic there. Over the past six months, 28 million people travelled through the airport. That is 70 percent of the airport’s pre-pandemic levels, even though China is still closed due to the severe pandemic restrictions Beijing introduced.

Paul Griffiths, who oversees the world’s busiest airport for international travel, told the Associated Press that foreign football fans would flock to Al Maktoum International Airport at Dubai World Central or DWC. From there, they will travel to Qatar.

“We’ve seen a huge amount of demand at DWC for slot filings for airlines wanting to operate a shuttle service,” Mr Griffiths said. “I think the city has a lot to offer and a lot to gain from the World Cup.”

Griffiths mentioned three airlines buying extra slots to shuttle soccer fans to the tournament from DWC:

  • Qatar Airways,
  • FlyDubai,
  • Wizz Air Abu Dhabi.

The ambition of Dubai is to turn the DWC into a mega-aviation hub.

Lately, we reported that Wizz Air planned to restart its flight to Moscow. However, they withdrew that decision after an international outcry. You may read further details in this issue in THIS article.

This year’s football world cup is exceptional. It is the first time a Middle-Eastern country organises the tournament. Furthermore, it is the first time the world cup takes place during autumn/winter instead of summer. That did not happen even during the 2010 FIFA world cup in South Africa, even though it was in the southern hemisphere where the seasons are reversed.

On THIS map, you may find the stadiums where the matches will be played.
