The Guardian: this Hungarian train journey is in Europe’s top 10 – PHOTOS

Budapest - Adriatic railway journey adria intercity

The Guardian collected Europe’s ten best train journeys: gorgeous scenery, historic routes and adventures. One is the Budapest-Adriatic route connecting the Hungarian capital with the Croatian seashore. What was the source of the British daily newspaper? They worked with Lonely Planet’s Guide to Train Travel in Europe written by Tom Hall.

The future of tourism belongs to trains?

According to the British news outlet, railway journeys “evoke a timelessness (…) absent from the uniform experience of flying.” Furthermore, they are more climate-friendly, so many countries invest in building high-speed lines and night trains.

Hungary, in this regard, is to build a Budapest-Warsaw high-speed line. Integrating Hungary into a European high-speed railway network will be “the grandest railway project of our life”, state secretary László Mosóczi told an online conference on the Budapest-Warsaw railway development project aimed at connecting the Visegrád countries and Austria last July. Once the new service is complete within the next ten years,

Vienna and Bratislava will be accessible from Budapest in less than 2 hours, Prague in 3.5 hours, and Warsaw in 5.5 hours,

the state secretary said.

It is not a high-speed line, but The Guardian still selected the Hungarian-Croatian Budapest-Adriatic railway route among the best lines in Europe.

“Budapest to Split on a sleeper”

To escape summer heat the Budapest-Adriatic night service is a very tempting choice – The Guardian argues. “In recent years the train has left Budapest at midnight, getting into Split after lunch. En route it passes the Hungarian holiday playground of Lake Balaton and Zagreb, Croatia’s capital. Once on the Adriatic coast, buses head south to Dubrovnik, while ferries and catamarans radiate out to nearby islands” – they wrote.

Below you can find photos of the journey MÁV, the Hungarian Railways, shared on their Facebook page.

They said in a post that all trains circulating between Budapest and the sea are modern and well-equipped. For example, they all have an air conditioning system. After the train leaves Zagreb, it crosses the Dinaric Alps, going even above 900 metres in some places. Thus, one should expect a breathtaking view during the journey. Moreover, the Hungarian Railways highlighted this service was already in their summer schedule.

Here are the railway lines The Guardian praised as Europe’s bests:

  • Paris to Berlin – fast or slow
  • Amsterdam to Vienna on the Nightjet
  • Loop the loop in North Wales
  • From Bastia to Ajaccio through the Corsican interior
  • Dublin to Madrid by train and ferry
  • Venice to Palermo – across the water in Italy
  • From coast to coast, via a mountain high – Oslo to Bergen
  • Paris to Barcelona on the slow train
  • Locarno to Domodossola through the Swiss Alps

Orbán: Hungary is a great nation, helps those in need but sends no soldiers to Ukraine

Refugees at Keleti Railway Station in Budapest

In a video on Facebook, Viktor Orbán said Hungary’s approach to the war in Ukraine was, morally speaking, “as it should be”. Meeting voters in Szentendre, north of Budapest, on Sunday, Orbán said Democratic Coalition leader Ferenc Gyurcsány “tells us that we’re an abysmal nation if we don’t send soldiers or weapons, and if we don’t participate in this war.”

“Let’s be clear: we’re a great nation … We’re helping more than half a million people in need. We’re a great country acting, morally speaking, exactly as we should,” Orbán said. “But let no one ask us to … take part in a war that’s not our war.” “We can see the suffering, but we mustn’t heap ruin on ourselves by sending our children into war we have nothing to do with …” the prime minister said.

MTI reported today that fully 1,169 refugees received help from staff at the BOK sports and events centre serving as a humanitarian transit point on Saturday, including 149 people who spent the night there, the Budapest Metropolitan Government Office said on Sunday.

The round-the-clock facility offers food, interpreters, medical services, internet access and showers, space for mothers with small children, and a children’s play area. Staff are available to help with organising accommodation, travel and administration of asylum applications.

The state-owned Hungarian railways MÁV operates an international ticket office at the transit point where refugees can receive their “solidarity tickets”. Those travelling on are taken by bus to Keleti and Nyugati railway stations and Liszt Ferenc International Airport, and those staying in Hungary receive assistance with finding accommodation, they said.

As we can read in Helló Magyar’s article, Grimshaw Architects, a world-renowned British architectural office, has won the design competition for the new Nyugati Railway Station. Among many other projects, they have designed stations and subway stations in London, Melbourne, Los Angeles, and New York.

The team of Grimshaw Architects also includes Hungarian architects from Nautes Architects.

“The Nyugati Railway Station is being redesigned as a modern, three-storey, partly underground, 21st-century railway station. A new railway hall will be built on the surface behind the Eiffel Hall, and a 6-track underground station will be built underground, allowing the station to accommodate many more trains,”

Balázs Fürjes, State Secretary for the Development of Budapest and the Metropolitan Agglomeration, wrote in a Facebook post on 26 March.

“The city centre will be greened up: a green, park-like, permeable new district will be created around Nyugati. The renewal of Nyugati station and its surroundings will free up 23.5 hectares and turn the station and its surroundings into a green space,”

he added.

A new, 13-track modern railway hall is being built behind the Eiffel Hall. The hall will become a new community space and meeting point, with the end of rail traffic at the street level, creating a new focal point and meeting point for the capital, a new community space with shops, cafés, an event space and restaurants.

The modernisation will create new entrances to the station, with easy access from Eiffel Square, Podmaniczky Street, Ferdinand Bridge, and Westend.

A new, long green park will be created from Nyugati to Városliget, running along Podmaniczky Street.

The 17-hectare recreation area will include a running track and several community sports fields. For families, there will be a playground for children of all ages, with toilets and baby changing facilities.

A dog park and large green recreation areas will be created, and new vegetation will be planted. The park will be lined with new buildings that will also serve as a noise barrier towards Terézváros. The industrial heritage building of the railway engine shed will be used for cultural purposes.

The car park and bus station will move away from Westend.

In their place will be a welcoming green space, with trees and quality street furniture. The car flyover at the intersection of Nagykörút, Váci Street, and Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Street will be demolished.

Useful – Hungary to switch to summer time on Sunday!

Time clock

Daylight saving time will begin in Hungary on Sunday, 27 March, with clocks going forward an hour.

In line with the rest of Europe, clocks will change to summer time before dawn so that 0200 becomes 0300. The EU-standard change will slightly affect railway and long-distance bus transport timetables.

The switchover will

affect the timetables of two international trains.

The Dacia-Corvin expresses running between Vienna and Bucharest will depart from Berettyóújfalu in both directions with a 60-minute delay.

Hungary adopted the daylight saving system back in 1980. Under a 1996 government decree, summer time begins on the last Sunday of March and ends on the last Sunday of October.

Here is the weather forecast for Saturday:

Sunny, no rain. Cumulus clouds appearing in the east and the northeast. Strong gusts of westerly, north-westerly winds. Lows: -3, +5 C. Highs: 17, 22 C.

Vučić: “our Hungarian friends raised a voice” in defence of Serbia in Brussels

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic 3

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić thanked Prime Minister Viktor Orbán for Hungary’s support in Brussels at an event in Novi Sad, Serbia, on Saturday.

Vučić said “our Hungarian friends” have “raised a voice” in defence of Serbia in Brussels, while others remain silent.

“In this difficult crisis, we have agreed on one thing: that whatever it may be that Serbia is lacking, Hungary will be the first to offer it, while whatever Hungary is lacking, it can count on Serbia to be the first to meet that need,” he said.

“That’s how to build a friendship,” he added.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Belgrade-Novi Sad rail line, on which trains will run at 200 km/hour, Vučić said the line is a “symbol of Serbia’s development”.

He noted that the line was the result of an international effort, involving not only Serbs, but Chinese, Russians, Germans and the Swiss.

Vučić arrived in Novi Sad with Orbán by train.

PM Orbán: “Serbs and Hungarians must rethink a number of things”

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said the friendship between Hungarians and Serbs has never been as close as now, speaking at the inauguration of the Belgrade-Novi Sad rail line on Saturday.

“We will implement all our great plans together with your president, despite the difficult circumstances,” Orbán said after arriving by train in Novi Sad with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić.

He said that the war in Ukraine has “come at the worst possible time”, presenting “a serious challenge, because we have developed so well, we have started with such great momentum, and we still have so many good plans ahead of us”.

He added that the war is felt “by everyone here in our hearts and minds”.

Orbán said the world has become uncertain, and Serbs and Hungarians must rethink a number of things. “I hope that President Vučić and I will play a role in this rethink” after the upcoming elections, he added.

Orbán said the rail line – part of an upgrade of the Belgrade-Budapest line – would “make life easier for Serbs and Hungarians” and pledged that the entire stretch would be operational by 2025.

Hungarian volunteers establish children’s corner in Budapest for refugees

Gyereksarok Childrens Corner Budapest

Volunteers and charity organisation workers have established a children’s corner in the Keleti Railway Station in Budapest to provide Ukrainian refugee mothers with a space where they can take care of their children.

Since the war between Russia and Ukraine broke out, thousands of refugees have fled from the conflict through the Hungarian border and locals have proved that they are willing to help if their neighbours and fellow Hungarians are in danger.

Since the onset of the military conflict, charity organisations have gathered aid for people in Transcarpathia and set up refugee support points at the border crossings.

Additionally, one of Hungary’s largest hotels was reopened to provide accommodation for refugees. Some of the wealthiest Hungarians also sent help in the form of money, paid accommodation or food.

And now, Szeretlekmagyarország reported that some volunteers have created a children’s corner at the Keleti Railway Station out of nothing but the donations of everyday citizens.

The initiative started out as a Facebook group, called Gyereksarok-Keleti, which grew quickly. Two days ago, they counted 500 members, while they are nearly at 2,000 members now.

According to Blikk, the main goal of the group is to provide help for refugee children and create a friendly environment for mothers where they can take care of their children.

Volunteers are also happy to help mothers in need with changing diapers, helping children to use a potty and even nursing from a bottle.

According to the group’s administrator, Flóra K., they would like to establish a 3 metres by 3 metres tent at the station, to be able to properly separate mothers who would like to breastfeed their children or change the little ones’ diapers.

They said that they no longer need new clothes, because they have more than needed, but highlighted that donations of feeding bottles, baby spoons and baby carriages are always welcome.

From policemen to volunteers to refugees, so far everyone agreed that the initiative was a great idea. Children can play with donated toys which will distract them from the havoc for a little while, while mothers can finally take a big breath and relax among attentive and helping volunteers.

You are a refugee in Hungary? Here is how you can get free train seat tickets

railway_refugees_ukraine

The Budapest municipality has offered to pay for 3,000 train seat tickets to help refugees from Ukraine, Mayor Gergely Karácsony said on Facebook on Thursday.

The mayor suggested that the government’s offer of free travel for refugees on Hungary’s railway lines “is still not entirely free” as they need seats to go with the tickets which they could not buy unless they had forints. He said that exchanging the Ukrainian currency had become difficult in Budapest, while

an increasing number of refugees could not use their bank cards either.

“Civil activists, volunteers are seen in front of the box offices paying for the ‘free’ tickets,” Karácsony said. The mayor said they had contacted civil organisations helping refugees, and said he hoped “by the time the city’s seat tickets run out, the government will have changed the rules to ensure that travel by train is in fact free for the refugees”.

Aid centres set up at the Hungary-Ukraine border are well prepared to receive the growing number of refugees expected from Ukraine in the next few days, the state secretary for church and minority relations said on Thursday.

Miklós Soltész told MTI after visiting Barabás and Beregsurány at the border that aid workers and police expect further masses of refugees to set off from Transcarpathia in the near future, following a few days of calmer conditions in recent days. Donations received from all over Hungary have filled storage capacities at aid centres and now everyone who wants to send contribution are asked to forward non-perishable food directly to a central warehouse in Aranyosapáti, he said.

First Lady Anita Herczegh, a goodwill ambassador of the Hungarian Maltese Charity, also visited the aid centre in Beregsurány on Thursday.

She praised Hungarians’ readiness to help refugees and said that communities in neighbouring villages had joined forces in the first few days of the war already and this has been further elevated after the arrival of aid organisations.

Imre Szabján, the head of the Hungarian Maltese Charity’s crisis management working group, said that psychological first aid was also being offered in Beregsurány, which appears to be increasingly in demand among refugees traumatised by recent events.

Tenders for renewal of Budapest’s iconic railway station being assessed

western_railway_station_budapest

The second-round assessment of bids in the tender to renew of Nyugati Railway Station and its surroundings is about to begin, Balázs Fürjes, the Prime Minister’s commissioner for Budapest and its agglomeration, said on Facebook on Friday.

In October 2021, a two-round international architectural design competition was announced for the project to fully revamp Nyugati station and its surroundings, he noted.

Altogether 23.5 hectares will be emptied and replaced by public parks, quality green areas and new public buildings. The station itself will be remodelled and an underground station with six tracks added.

The square in front of the station will also be remodelled and greenified.

Twelve teams of architects and engineers with vast experience in renovating Europe’s large, historic railway stations are being considered for the project. The best teams of architects in the world are creating plans in cooperation with five Hungarian offices, he added.

The winner of the tender will be announced on March 26, Fürjes said.

Hungarian-Russian development to significantly increase Chinese transit!

Logistics centre Csepel Budapest

A Hungarian-Russian railway joint venture will be established this spring, enabling 1,000 Chinese freight trains to transit Hungary to western Europe each year, Péter Szijjártó, Hungary’s minister of foreign affairs and trade, said on Facebook on Thursday.

The minister noted that boosting rail cargo transport had featured on the agenda of talks between Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Feb. 1.

Hungary has a vested interest in the highest possible share of Chinese rail cargo shipments transiting its territory, he said.

The logistics centre in Fényeslitke, in north-eastern Hungary, to be completed in a few days’ time, will reload containers along the European Union’s eastern border most quickly, Szijjártó said.

The Russian State Railways (RZSD), the world’s second biggest freight transporter, will be an excellent partner in this effort, he said. Referring to his recent talks with RZSD chief executive Oleg Belozerov, Szijjártó said the Hungarian-Russian joint venture will be set up this spring.

Budapest rail tunnel project enters new stage

MÁV, KISS, Nyugati, train, Hungary

The Budapest Development Centre (BFK) and Főmterv have signed a contract to prepare an environmental impact study for a planned tunnel under the River Danube linking the city’s suburban railway lines, BFK head Dávid Vitézy said on Tuesday.

The 850 million forint (EUR 2.4m) study is part of the government’s Budapest Suburban Railway Strategy, and will be co-financed by the government and European Union, Vitézy said.

The impact study will review the environmental effects of a tunnel linking the Kelenföld railway station and Széll Kálmán Square in Buda, and the Nyugati railway station in Pest, as well as a reconstruction of the latter,

he said.

An environmental impact assessment procedure is required before any activity with significant effects on the environment is started or extended. The environmental impact assessment covers the section between the Kelenföld railway station and the Városligeti junction, including the tunnel and the connecting above-ground railway facilities. So it is not only the tunnel itself that is part of the work, but also the new two-level Nyugati station (for which a design tender is under way) and the development of the sections from the Vác and Cegléd lines.

nyugati kelenföld

The design will have to take into account, for example, new underground stations, stops, circulation spaces, ventilation systems, utilities, but also surface parks, car parks, public transport elements, operational facilities and safety installations.

Budapest cannot accommodate more trains during weekday peak periods due to overcrowding and lack of capacity at the main stations, although our modelling suggests that the demand for suburban services should be more than 90 trains per peak hour, instead of the current 42, he said.

A new, two-level railway station would greatly relieve the system, he said.

The renovation of railway line 71 has begun. As part of this, the Rákospalota-Újpest railway station will be renewed in Budapest. We will show the plans for the currently obsolete train station.

A railway station will be renovated

One of the oldest railway stations in Budapest is the Rákospalota-Újpest railway station. There are a number of problems at the train station. Railway platforms are narrow and not accessible. The platform roof is missing in several places, and the state of the building and its surroundings has rather deteriorated. “It’s time to change that,” writes Dávid Vitézy, CEO of the Budapest Development Centre.

“The planning phase of the complete renovation of the Rákospalota-Újpest-Veresegyház-Vác railway line of the 71st railway line has started, including the complete renovation and modernisation of the Rákospalota-Újpest station,”

writes Vitézy in his Facebook post. Based on the Budapest Agglomeration Railway Strategy, the Budapest Development Centre (BFK) finalised the plans in the last few months.

According to the plans, two middle platforms will welcome trains in the future.

BFK asked the teams of three architectural firms, Sporaarchitects, RJZS, and Paragram, to make conceptual proposals for the new Rákospalota-Újpest station.

Large-scale planning in consultation with the capital

During the preparation of the plans, BFK agreed with districts 4 and 15 and their chief architects and the professional staff of the capital. They have worked using these expert opinions and will continue to do so.

The plans of the renovated Rákospalota-Újpest railway station include:

  • spacious, barrier-free, covered, modern middle platforms;
  • the platforms will be completely accessible;
  • the historical station building will be preserved but renovated;
  • public areas along the railways will be renewed;
  • the platforms will be shifted to the south;
  • a pedestrian and bicycle underpass will be constructed.

BFK also plans to build new B+R bicycle storages and P+R car parks.

However, there is no agreement with local governments in this regard, writes hvg.hu. On the new track, trains can reach a speed of 100-120 kilometres per hour. Thanks to the state-of-the-art train station, trains can travel more frequently.

Russia prepared to contribute to construction of rail line bypassing Budapest

máv hungary railway transport cargo

Russia is open to exploring its options for contributing to the construction of a new freight rail line bypassing Budapest, the Ministry of Innovation and Technology (ITM) said on Tuesday.

Russian Transport Minister Vitaly Savelyev told Innovation and Technology Minister László Palkovics in a video call that Russia was prepared to share its experience and know-how with Hungary for the construction of the so-called V0 railway line from running from Záhony on the Ukraine-Hungary border, through Győr, in western Hungary, to the Hungry-Austria border, and would examine how it could help finance the project, ITM said in a statement.

The project’s environmental permit could be obtained by next spring, while the feasibility study could be completed by summer 2023,

the ministry cited Palkovics as saying.

Palkovics and Savelyev also welcomed the establishment of a Hungarian, Russian and Austrian cargo joint venture last year.

The JV will focus on bringing imports from China to southern Europe via Russia and Hungary,

the ministry noted.

Meanwhile, the ministers highlighted the importance of scientific and technical cooperation between their research institutes, universities and rail companies. They also welcomed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the ITM and the management of Russian truck maker KAMAZ on establishing an electric vehicle R and D base in Hungary.

As we wrote yesterday, Hungary opposes any measures that may exacerbate the situation in Ukraine while supporting efforts aimed at resolving the conflict through negotiations, the foreign minister said in Brussels. Read more details HERE.

Accident! M3 metro collided in Budapest

M3 Metro Collision 3

The Budapest Transport Privately Held Corporation (BKV) reported to MTI, that on Friday night a train at the line M3 had collided with another train.

According to BKV the accident happened at the “kihúzó” (pull-out) section of metro line M3 at an area not used by passengers.

Fortunately, there were no passengers on the train at the time of the accident and no personal injury had occurred, – the company said to MTI.

The police, the Transportation Safety Bureau and BKV are currently investigating what might have happened exactly.

According to the company’s reports a third train was also damaged in the accident, and it is now stuck in the area, they said.

An assessment of damages is currently ongoing, but from the pictures it seems that not only the three trains have been damaged in the accident, but also a great portion of the railway track have been lifted and deformed.

Concerning traffic, the company had not yet announced how it will affect it, but from the damage in the pictures, it might have a great impact on traffic.

New railways to be built in Hungarian-Chinese partnership

The two countries have struck deals in the past.

Discussions could begin soon between the Hungarian and Chinese governments about a joint collaboration. The aim is to build a railway, which would help Hungary become a transport, logistics and distribution centre in Central Europe. – wrote vg.hu.

The details of the collaboration will be defined by both parties, but specific projects will not be mentioned. The agreement could provide a general framework.

With the high-speed rail (HSR) developments, the V4 countries could be linked. Until now, there are four known projects: Budapest – Bratislava (Slovakia), Budapest – Prague (Czech Republic), Budapest – Warsaw (Poland) and Budapest – Cluj Napoca (also known as Kolozsvár, in Romania).

Hungary has great plans regarding railway development.

According to vg.hu, “in the spirit of its policy of opening up to the East, Hungary is constantly looking for new opportunities to expand its cooperation with Chinese partners”. One of the main goals of the project for Hungary is to become a transport, logistics and distribution center in Central Europe. This is the reason behind the government’s work to use modern and safe logistical methods to link regions and continents. China is an ideal partner for the project, as the country has accomplished to build two-thirds of the world’s densest total high-speed rail network. As Daily News Hungary formerly wrote,

railway constructions will clearly be in the focus of Hungary’s transport development endeavours in the next 10-15 years.

One of the most significant and talked-about railways is the Budapest – Belgrade route. The project will be finished by 2025 and is financed by China, Hungary and Serbia. Péter Szijjártó, Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs said that “more and more Chinese commodities arrive in the Greek ports and need to be transported to Central and Western Europe. There is a sharp competition for providing a transit route for them”.

SHOCKING – Hungarian man killed himself and his 6y/o daughter in Austria

All Saints Day, candle, mourning

A 38-year-old Hungarian man jumped in front of a Railjet train in Lower-Austria, together with his six-year-old daughter. The incident happened on Tuesday night, and since then, the shocking tragedy has become national news in Austria.

At first, the driver thought he had hit 3 people

At first, the news announced said that a man who lives in Austria had jumped in front of a train in Sollenau, together with his child, and they both died, says Index.hu. The driver of the train reported that he could have run over a third person in the dark as well, but the search teams found nobody else in the area.

Police are still investigating the shocking matter. It seems very likely that it was a suicide. This also seems to be confirmed by what has been published in the Austrian media about the man and his family.

Previous problems

The Austrian newspaper, Kronen Zeitung, figured out that the man was an amateur tennis player with family problems. His wife, who had previously been chosen as the beauty of Lower Austria, divorced him a few years ago. The man could never accept this and repeatedly threatened to kill her and their daughter as well.

The first threats, according to the Austrian court, were made around the fall of 2017, and from then until February 2018, they were repeated several times.

For the next three years, he reportedly abandoned them, but in July 2021, he once again threatened his ex-wife. He was saying that he would push her in front of a train with her daughter.

He was sentenced to 12 months in prison

That threat was already followed by a court case: on November 15, 2021, the man was finally sentenced to twelve months in prison and a fine of €720. In addition, they were required to undergo psychotherapy during the probationary period.

The police is doing their best to figure out what happened, says spokesman Andreas Winter.
