Good news for drivers concerning Hungarian fuel prices

Fuel prices in Hungary

Fuel prices in Hungary were under the average in neighbouring countries in the month of September, data compiled from the EU Weekly Oil Bulletin by the Central Statistics Office (KSH) show, the National Economy Ministry said on Friday.

The price of petrol in Hungary averaged 585/litre (EUR 1.5) during the month, HUF 2 under the average in neighbouring countries. The price of diesel stood at HUF 592/litre, HUF 1 under the average in neighbouring countries.

Hungary’s government earlier said it would intervene if motor fuel prices exceeded the average in neighbouring countries.

Budapest traffic to be paralysed this weekend due to car-free weekend and WWII bomb disarmament

Budapest traffic travel European summer no-go zones visitor numbers

The car-free weekend in Budapest was postponed due to the historic flood following the raging of Cyclone Boris in Central Europe. The new date is 5 and 6 October, which means lots of traffic restrictions for drivers in the downtown. Furthermore, due to the disarmament of a WWII explosive, half of South Pest will also be closed to public transport and cars. Be careful on the roads!

Budapest traffic in the downtown will be challenging this weekend

According to Telex, the car-free weekend in Budapest will start today and last until tomorrow since it had to be postponed due to the Danube flood. As a result, the Szabadság Bridge, the Vámház Promenade until Lónyay Street and the Pest lower embankment between the Margaret Bridge and the Közraktár Street will be closed to car traffic.

In addition, trams nr 47, 48, and 49 will not commute this weekend. You may use trams 61 or 56A instead of them. BKK also recommends the use of M4 metro line, bus lines 7 and 133E, metro line M3 and bus lines 9 and 15 this weekend.

BKK welcomes guests with numerous open-air programmes in connection to the European Mobility Week and the car-free weekend. For example, there will be a Food Truck Show until 10 PM on Saturday and 8 PM on Sunday. You can try some historic trams in front of Budapest’s Great Market Hall. Below, you may find a map showing the program venues. Unfortunately, it is in Hungarian, just like the detailed programme, which you can check out HERE.

WWII bomb disarmament paralyses traffic in South Pest, changes train traffic to Vienna

Authorities found a WWII bomb near the Southern railway bridge in Budapest, close to the Hungarian National Theatre. Experts decided to disarm it on Saturday afternoon, which seriously affects traffic since police will close the area and evacuate all residents. Moreover, you will not be able to use the Rákóczi Bridge, some bus lines commuting on Soroksári Street, and suburban railway line H6, Világgazdaság wrote.

Furthermore, trains will not commute on that line between noon and 4 PM. As a result, trains via Győr to Vienna or Pécs will begin the journey from Kelenföld station in Buda. The same goes for passenger trains G43 and S36. The suburban railway line will carry passengers between Ráckeve and Kén Street between 10 AM and 4 PM. The Hungarian State Railways (MÁV) recommends that passengers access Kelenföld railway station with the M4 metro line. BKK will accept valid train tickets between 10 AM and 5 PM on metro line M3 between Kőbánya-Kispest and Kálvin Square stations on metro line M4 and tram line 1 between Népliget and Kelenföld stations.

TUI offers attractive autumn deals from Hungary

Budapest Airport travel tourism TUI (Copy)

TUI offers attractive autumn deals for Egypt and Turkey as autumn begins, TUI looks back on a successful summer season in 2024: This summer, Hungarians were particularly eager to travel and secured the most beautiful sunny spots with TUI. “We saw a significant double-digit percentage increase in guests compared to the previous year,” says Tamás Taskár, Sales Manager at TUI. “Many guests fulfilled their dream of a relaxing vacation on the Turkish Riviera. We also saw a sharp increase in demand for Egypt,” Taskar continues. TUI guests can still secure attractive sunny spots by the sea for the autumn holidays.

With the new flight route from Debrecen to Antalya launched in June as part of TUI’s program and the multiple weekly departures from Budapest, Hungarian travelers could travel especially conveniently to the Turkish Riviera this summer. This is also reflected in the summer booking rankings, where Antalya clearly ranks first. The routes from Budapest to Heraklion in Crete and Larnaca in Cyprus were also successfully introduced. In the country ranking for summer 2024, Turkey leads ahead of Greece and Croatia, followed by Spain and Cyprus. The top climber of the summer is Egypt. “We are very pleased that almost three times as many guests chose a vacation on the Red Sea this year compared to the previous year,” adds Taskár. For long-distance travel, the United Arab Emirates and the island paradise of the Maldives were the most popular destinations this summer.

For their one-week summer vacation, Hungarian TUI guests spent an average of just under 1,000 euros per person. About 45 percent of travelers opted for accommodation in the five-star category or higher. All-inclusive offers remain very popular. “People appreciate the budget security of all-inclusive bookings, where all additional costs at the hotel are already included in the price,” explains Taskár. 66 percent of TUI guests chose the all-inclusive option. The most popular hotel among TUI guests in Hungary this summer was the TUI Magic Life Jacaranda in Turkey.

Looking ahead to autumn, Taskár says: “During the autumn holidays, our guests can still secure attractive sunny spots in Turkey and on the Red Sea. We offer daily flights from Budapest to Antalya, as well as weekly flights to Izmir. Until the end of October, we also have two weekly flights to Hurghada.” Particularly popular hotels in the autumn include the adults-only Club TUI Magic Life Beldibi with the Taurus Mountains in the background, and the family-friendly TUI Kids Club Turan Prince Residence with a large water park. For example, seven nights at the TUI Kids Club Turan Prince Residence, with a flight from Budapest on October 25, start from 899 euros per person in a double room with all-inclusive.

Important milestone in Budapest’s public transport: new electric buses to come

New electric buses come to Budapest

The Budapest Public Transport Centre (BKK) has signed 12-year contracts with ArrivaBus to put 70 new electric buses by BYD into service from spring 2026.

70 + 30 new electric buses will carry passengers in Budapest

ArrivaBus will be in charge of the operation and maintenance of the buses, employing drivers and providing charging infrastructure, the Hungarian News Agency reported.

According to the Budapest Transport Centre, the environment-friendly vehicles will be modern, low-floor, purely electric, and air-conditioned. Based on the plans, they will carry passengers in busy downtown lines.

Photo: FB/BKK

Out of the 70 buses, 50 will be solo, while 20 will be articulated. ArrivaBus, which won the relevant tender in October and December, will provide BYD buses. They hope serving downtown routes with purely electric vehicles will help improve the capital’s air quality. Furthermore, the aim is to help meet the city’s climate goals and make Budapest more resistant to the consequences of climate change.

Interestingly, ArrivaBus wrote in their Facebook post that they will supply Budapest with 82 electric buses and open a new era in the capital’s public transport system. They added that Budapest will be the first European capital to run buses with the so-called “Blade Battery Technology”. ArrivaBus wrote that passengers could travel on the new buses from early 2026.

The goal is zero-emission

Budapest’s local government and the BKK are determined to operate sustainable public transport in Budapest.

ArrivaBus has been supplying 240 buses for Budapest’s public transport fleet since 2015. Based on the current contract, ordering 30% more buses is an option for Budapest. If the capital does so, 10% of its bus fleet will be purely electric.

Budapest prefers zero-emission vehicles both in the trolley and the bus segments. That is how the capital would meet the European Commission’s Green Deal goals, envisioning a carbon-neutral European Union by 2050.

As a result, they plan to acquire 20 more purely electric midi buses, and the relevant public procurement process is already in progress.

Thanks to the gradual development of Budapest’s bus fleet, passengers can only meet low-floor buses in the capital. However, the number of buses older than 18 is still almost 200.

New trams and trolley buses

In the last few years, 51 low-floor, air-conditioned CAF trams arrived with the help of EU funds, and the BKK is already working on a new tender to acquire 100 more modern trams. Provided they have the financial background, BKK can welcome 160 modern, environment-friendly, low-floor trolley buses.

The first new CAF tram arrived in Budapest yesterday:

Investments set to boost Alstom bogie frame capacity in Hungary

A HUF 6bn investment programme that is winding down at French rolling stock maker Alstom’s bogie frame plant in Mátranovák (Northeast Hungary) will boost capacity there by 40pc, Gaspar Balazs, in charge of the company’s local operations, said at an industry conference.

In a few years, the Mátranovák plant could account for one-third of Alstom’s bogie frame capacity worldwide, Balazs said in a statement issued by the company on Thursday.

This year, the base will turn out 1,600 bogie frames.

digital nomad expats budapest white card

As remote work gains global momentum, Hungary is fast emerging as a top destination for digital nomads. Offering an appealing blend of affordability, accessibility, and modern infrastructure, Hungary attracts remote workers seeking a comfortable yet cost-effective lifestyle in the heart of Europe. The introduction of Hungary’s White Card, a visa specifically designed for digital nomads, further cements the country’s place as a leading hotspot for location-independent professionals.

Hungary’s digital nomad visa: The White Card

Hungary’s “White Card” visa is a game-changer for remote workers looking to base themselves in the European Union, Programming Insider writes. This digital nomad visa offers a range of benefits, but it’s important to note that it doesn’t lead to citizenship and doesn’t allow for family inclusion. Despite these limitations, the visa has proven to be an attractive option for digital nomads.

Eligibility requirements

To qualify for the White Card, applicants need to show proof of employment with a company outside Hungary and demonstrate that they earn at least EUR 3,000 per month. This ensures that applicants have a stable source of income while residing in Hungary.

Duration

The White Card is valid for one year, with the possibility of a one-year extension, providing flexibility for those wanting to spend more time in the country.

Key benefits

According to Programming Insider, the most important benefits of the White Card are the following:

  • Freedom to live and work remotely in an EU country
  • Access to Hungary’s healthcare and education systems
  • Banking privileges within Hungary and across the EU
  • No income tax if residing in Hungary for fewer than 183 days per year
  • Free travel throughout the Schengen Area without needing additional visas

Application process

The White Card application process is straightforward:

  1. Submit proof of employment and income from outside Hungary.
  2. Acquire health insurance valid in Hungary.
  3. Apply at the nearest Hungarian consulate with the required documentation.
  4. Wait for approval, which can take up to six months.

The appeal of life in Hungary for digital nomads

hungary budapest among most crowded cities tourism landscape
Photo: depositphotos.com

Hungary offers a unique lifestyle for digital nomads, with its central location in Europe, a well-connected capital city, affordable living, and high-speed internet, making it an attractive choice for those working remotely.

Prime location in Europe:

Hungary’s central position in Europe, particularly Budapest, makes it a convenient base for travel. The capital city is well-connected by air and rail to other major European and global destinations, making it easy for digital nomads to explore neighbouring countries.

Thriving expat community:

Budapest, in particular, is home to a growing and diverse expat community. English is widely spoken, especially in major cities and among younger generations, making it easier for foreigners to navigate daily life. Many coworking spaces and social venues cater to English-speaking expats, ensuring a welcoming atmosphere for digital nomads.

Fast and reliable internet:

Hungary boasts some of the fastest internet speeds in Europe, with average download speeds for fixed broadband at around 174 Mbps and approximately 50 Mbps for mobile internet. This makes it an ideal location for remote work, where reliable connectivity is crucial.

Coworking spaces:

Budapest and other major Hungarian cities offer a variety of coworking spaces, ranging from open desks to private offices. These spaces often provide flexible rental options, catering to digital nomads who value a productive and collaborative work environment.

Affordable living costs:

One of Hungary’s major draws for digital nomads is its affordability, particularly in comparison to Western European capitals. In Budapest, the cost of living is relatively low, with a one-bedroom apartment in the city centre available for around EUR 500 per month, while utilities add another EUR 130. Public transportation is efficient and affordable, with a monthly pass costing around EUR 30. Dining out is also budget-friendly, with a meal at a mid-range restaurant averaging around EUR 12.

Healthcare and safety:

Hungary’s private healthcare system is known for its high quality, and private insurance can be obtained for as little as EUR 40 per month. The country also ranks highly in terms of safety, with relatively low levels of violent crime and an efficient police force that helps maintain a stable societal structure.

Conclusion

Hungary’s blend of affordable living, modern infrastructure, and central location in Europe make it a highly attractive destination for digital nomads. With the introduction of the White Card, remote workers now have an official pathway to enjoy the country’s benefits while staying connected to the rest of the world. Whether it’s the thriving expat community, fast internet, or the opportunity to explore Europe with ease, Hungary has quickly become a leading hotspot for digital nomads.

Vacation nightmare: Hungarian couple loses EUR 5,000 after being denied boarding on Ryanair flight

rhodes greece ryanair vacation ruined

A Hungarian couple was not allowed to board a Ryanair flight from Budapest to Rhodes, according to Blikk. One of them told the tabloid that a ground staff member called the police on them, suspecting they were intoxicated. Both passengers were subjected to alcohol and drug tests, which came back negative. As a result of the incident, the couple claims to have lost HUF 2 million (EUR 5,000) due to their ruined holiday and were also blacklisted by Ryanair.

An exciting start to a dream holiday

The couple had been looking forward to their vacation, but instead of enjoying the beaches and cocktails in Rhodes, they were humiliated, had the police called on them, and underwent sobriety and drug tests, Blikk reports. Kinga Piák and István Rill’s “dream holiday” took a sharp turn for the worse last Monday when they were denied boarding on an early morning flight to Rhodes under accusations of being under the influence of alcohol.

Kinga and István had been planning their holiday for months. They, along with two Swiss friends, headed to the airport, excited about their stay at a luxury hotel in Rhodes. Ryanair’s flight was scheduled to depart at 6 AM, and both couples arrived at the check-in counter as planned.

Things suddenly went wrong

Kinga told Blikk that she was still a bit sleepy in the early hours but excited about the trip. While waiting for boarding, her partner and a friend went to the restroom. A ground staff member reportedly urged them to hurry up. After rejoining, the staff member accused them of smelling like alcohol and told them they wouldn’t be allowed to board. Despite the fact that they hadn’t consumed any alcohol, they were pulled aside as if they had done something wrong.

The situation worsened when the staff seemed to enjoy their growing panic, as other passengers were getting ready to board. Though initially told they could rush to the plane, their journey ended when four uniformed police officers arrived and escorted them off the bus heading to the aircraft. Other passengers were likely startled by the scene.

Blacklisted by Ryanair

The couple was brought back to the terminal, where the police informed them that their vacation was over. Kinga insisted on sobriety tests, which eventually confirmed that neither of them was under the influence. By the time they were cleared, the flight had already departed, leaving them stranded and humiliated. Their luggage was returned, but they were told they were now blacklisted by Ryanair.

Frustrated by the incident, the couple plans to take legal action against the airline and Celebi, the company employing the ground staff member responsible for the ordeal. Their lawyer has already begun the necessary procedures.

In response to Blikk’s inquiry, Ryanair stated that by purchasing a ticket, passengers agree to the airline’s terms and conditions, which allow them to deny boarding if a passenger is deemed a threat to themselves, other passengers, or the crew.

emirates flights land in budapest

Several flights were forced to divert to alternate airports on Tuesday due to the severe Middle East conflict. While Emirates’ Budapest-Dubai flight rerouted to Istanbul, four Emirates planes landed at Budapest’s Liszt Ferenc International Airport, including two giant Airbus A380 aircraft.

Due to the conflict in Middle Eastern countries, many flights had to change their routes, and several were forced to turn back and land at alternate airports, AIRportal.hu reports. Israeli airports suspended both arrivals and departures, while airspace over Iraq and Jordan was closed. Restrictions were also imposed over parts of Iranian airspace.

The Emirates EK 112 flight from Budapest to Dubai turned back at the Turkish-Iranian border and later landed in Istanbul. After a delay of 2 hours and 20 minutes, it resumed its journey. According to information provided by Budapest Airport to AIRportal.hu, three Emirates flights turned back over Turkey and landed in Budapest.

The flights, originating from Dublin, Düsseldorf, and Prague, were en route to Dubai, carrying a total of 1,215 passengers. Two of the flights were operated by Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, while the Düsseldorf flight was serviced by an Airbus A380-800. Budapest’s Palace District ranked among the world’s best neighbourhoods

Hungarian National Museum

The Palace District, renowned for its vibrant cultural scene and historic charm, has been recognised as one of the world’s must-see destinations by Time Out magazine. This revitalised area of Budapest is celebrated for its unique blend of arts, community spirit, and gastronomy.

Time Out, an international magazine founded in London in 1968, initially started as a simple listings guide but has since evolved into a globally respected brand. Today, the Time Out Group publishes in 333 cities across 59 countries, offering editorial recommendations. Over the years, the magazine has been repeatedly honoured with accolades, such as International Consumer Magazine of the Year and International Consumer Media Brand of the Year, according to Józsefváros Újság.

Periodically, Time Out releases its list of the world’s best neighbourhoods to visit. This year, its editors compiled a list of 38 areas they believe will define 2024. According to the magazine, a neighbourhood’s appeal now extends far beyond craft breweries, trendy wine bars, and street art. The most engaging and enjoyable districts reflect the essence of a city—its culture, community, nightlife, and gastronomy—all within a lively, easily accessible area.

Budapest’s Palace District earned a spot on this prestigious list, recommended by Peterjon Cresswell, editor of Time Out Croatia.

A perfect blend of history, culture and modern vibes in Palace District

Once home to aristocrats, the Palace District is now experiencing a renaissance. According to Time Out, its 19th-century mansions, once belonging to nobility, now house a flourishing cultural scene. At the heart of the Palace District are the National Museum and the Italian Institute, both located in historic buildings that once housed branches of Parliament. The museum’s recently renovated gardens, featuring a playground and terrace café, offer a perfect starting point for exploring the area.

Bródy Sándor Street and Mikszáth Kálmán Square, known for their cafés, galleries, and boutiques, have become popular spots for students. By day, these spaces are ideal for relaxed conversations, and by night, they transform into venues for exhibitions and events.

A perfect day in the Palace District could begin with a Turkish-inspired breakfast at The Garden Café, followed by record shopping at Kalóz and browsing vintage clothing at Typo Showroom. For lunch, visitors can enjoy natural wines at Charbon, before spending the afternoon taking in contemporary art at the Molnár Ani Gallery and Főfotó. The evening can then be rounded off with drinks at one of the district’s bars, such as Jaromír a Templomhoz, Fecske, or Lumen.

For those wishing to stay overnight, Brody House, an art-inspired boutique hotel, is an excellent option. Additionally, the recently reopened Corvin Palace will soon be home to the Time Out Market Budapest, set to open in May. Visitors will be able to enjoy wine tastings and gastronomic tours year-round, guided by experts from the Taste Hungary wine shop and cellar.

The magazine’s annual rankings are based on nominations from local writers and editors, who recommend the trendiest neighbourhoods in their cities. Time Out’s global editorial team then narrows down and ranks the list, taking into account factors such as gastronomy, arts, street life, community, and the distinctive character of each area.

Wizz Air expands payment options and adjusts plans for Saudi expansion

jeddah saudi arabia

Wizz Air, a prominent Hungarian low-cost airline, has introduced new payment options in its mobile apps, allowing passengers to use Google Pay and Apple Pay for their transactions. These mobile wallet features, now available on both Android and iOS platforms, aim to streamline the booking process, especially for last-minute travellers and those purchasing additional services shortly before departure. The airline noted that over 30% of passengers typically add extra services after booking, with nearly half opting to do so through the mobile app. This enhancement is expected to offer passengers faster and more secure ways to pay for both tickets and services, such as seat selection and baggage.

In addition to this payment upgrade, Wizz Air now accepts Revolut bank cards onboard its flights (as we detailed HERE), further expanding the range of payment options available to customers, AIRportal.hu reports. This move is part of a broader effort to enhance convenience and meet the evolving expectations of travellers.

Change in Wizz Air’s Saudi expansion plans

wizz air 2023 multipass

Despite these positive developments, the airline recently announced a significant shift in its expansion plans in Saudi Arabia, according to another article by AIRportal.hu. Wizz Air has decided to abandon its initial proposal to establish a 50-aircraft joint venture in the Kingdom.

This project, which was first outlined in a 2022 agreement with the Saudi government, would have involved the creation of a local subsidiary to bolster operations in the region. However, instead of proceeding with this venture, the airline will focus on growing its presence in Saudi Arabia as a destination market, launching additional routes from European hubs.

One key part of this strategy involves the use of the long-range Airbus A321XLR aircraft, which will allow Wizz Air to serve more distant destinations. The first of these planes is expected to begin operating between London-Gatwick and Jeddah in March 2025. However, the airline’s subsidiary, Wizz Air Abu Dhabi, has delayed the launch of this aircraft type until 2026, citing the need to wait for the new Pratt & Whitney GTF Advantage engines, which are better suited to the hot and dusty climate of the region.

Wizz Air’s CEO, József Váradi, recently commented on these developments during an interview with Reuters. He explained that the decision to pause the Saudi joint venture was a strategic one, allowing the airline to focus on the growing demand for travel to Saudi Arabia. He also addressed the company’s financial challenges, noting that Wizz Air’s stock price has dropped by 42% over the past year. Váradi believes this decline is an overreaction to external factors such as geopolitical issues and the engine supply chain problems affecting many airlines worldwide.

New bonus package for CEO Váradi

In a related development, as we reported before, Wizz Air is set to introduce a new bonus package for its CEO. According to reports from HVG, Váradi is expected to receive a one-time stock award worth around GBP 700,000 on 1 October, which is three times his annual salary.

This package comes as part of a broader long-term incentive plan designed to motivate leadership through the company’s recovery from recent global challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical disruptions. Last year, shareholders approved a two-year extension of Váradi’s long-term bonus plan, which gives him the potential to earn up to GBP 100 million if the airline’s stock price increases fivefold to GBP 120 by the extended deadline. The upcoming stock bonus would count towards this total.

Good news: Train services resume on key railway line in Hungary after Danube flooding

esztergom-komárom train s74 máv train service

Starting Monday, 30 September, train services will resume between Esztergom and Komárom, eliminating the need for passengers to transfer to replacement buses on this route. The S74 trains will once again operate along the entire length of the line.

Train service resumes on key line

Following the receding of the Danube floodwaters, railway workers removed protective coverings and approximately 20,000 sandbags along the section between Lábatlan and Nyergesújfalu on the Esztergom–Komárom line, Economx reports. This stretch of the railway runs along the riverbank, doubling as part of the region’s flood defence infrastructure.

As part of the flood prevention efforts, the railway embankment was elevated near Tát to align it with the flood defence levee, aiding in water management, according to reports.

Before reopening the line, a full inspection of the railway tracks was conducted, including geotechnical assessments where necessary. Based on the findings, it was confirmed that train services can safely resume on the section that had been closed due to the flood defence measures.

Additionally, from 30 September, the previously closed section of Route 11 (Tát shortcut) affected by the flooding will also reopen. Bus services 812, 814, 817, 819, and the local T-route buses will return to their original routes, once again stopping at Táti út and Horgásztanya.

Young foreigners in Hungary love the capital for its vibrant cultural life and career opportunities

Young foreigners in Hungary Budapest tourists living in Hungary

Budapest Global Association’s recent survey reveals how young foreigners in Hungary see the country and the capital. In general, foreigners are more satisfied with the living conditions and opportunities in Budapest than the Hungarian youth. Here’s what young professionals from abroad love about the city and what they would improve.

Young foreigners in Hungary

Lelépő writes that a recent survey by the Budapest Global Association, conducted by the Equilibrium Institute, reveals that young people, including foreigners in Hungary, particularly those in their twenties, find the capital an ideal place to live. Budapest offers a wide range of opportunities in work, culture, education, and entertainment, making it highly attractive for young adults. However, the survey notes that while the city’s vibrant cultural scene and career development support appeal to this demographic, it may be less suited for families with young children and the elderly.

Good career opportunities

The research indicates that Budapest is highly appealing to young foreigners in Hungary, with three-quarters of young people between the ages of 18 and 35 living and working in the city liking it, and one in three recommending it as a place to live. The city’s excellent higher education institutions and abundant job opportunities make it an ideal location for career starters. Additionally, 40% of young people in Budapest express plans to start their businesses, highlighting the city’s potential for entrepreneurial growth alongside traditional employment paths.

Vibrant cultural life

Budapest offers a vibrant metropolitan lifestyle that appeals to young foreigners in Hungary. Survey respondents praised the city’s rich cultural scene, iconic entertainment venues, historic atmosphere, and diverse gastronomy. The survey revealed that 77% found Budapest exciting, 71% considered it lively, and 67% described it as open. Young people were also highly satisfied with the city’s public transport system, praising its convenience day and night, along with its timetables, frequency, and app functionality. The only criticism was the condition of the vehicles.

Do young people want to move from Budapest?

The survey reveals that 37% of young people in Budapest are considering moving, primarily abroad. Those with higher incomes and students tend to be more loyal to the capital, while individuals with lower education or financial difficulties are more likely to seek new opportunities elsewhere. Interestingly, young foreigners have a more positive outlook on Budapest’s core qualities, describing it as safe, close to nature, and less congested. However, they find everyday challenges like public cleanliness, tidiness, and healthcare more problematic.

This will be the all-time fastest train in Hungary, motorway remains closed for almost a year

Hungary Budapest-Belgrade railway

Dynamic testing of the Belgrade-Budapest superfast train started close to the Hungarian border. The subcontractor, the Deutsche Bahn Systemtechnik’s measurement train reaches 200 km/h in some sections. If ready, this will be the fastest train ever running in Hungary, but there is no news about finishing the Hungarian section of the line.

Train speed between Budapest and Belgrade may reach 200 km/h

According to Infostart, the testing period of the last, 100-km-long segment of the Belgrade-Budapest railway line in Serbia will be over on 10 October. Provided everything goes according to plans, the first scheduled train will begin carrying passengers on 25 November between Subotica (Szabadka) and Belgrade (184 kilometres). The stretch will take only 70 minutes, with trains running in both directions from 5 AM to 10 PM.

The Serbian President and the Greek prime minister announced earlier this year that they would add 1,500 kilometres to the Belgrade-Budapest line to establish a connection with Athens. The line is ready between Belgrade and Novi Sad (Újvidék). The high-speed train ‘Soko’ (‘Falcon’ in Serbian) completes the 76-kilometre-long segment in only 35 minutes.

Nothing is certain about the Hungarian line’s upgrade

In Serbia, the construction continued and in the last two years, the subcontractor renewed the Szabadka-Újvidék line. Szabadka (Subotica) is a town close to the Hungarian-Serbian border with a large Hungarian minority (26.2% in 2022). The dynamic testing started on the line and the German Deutsche Bahn Systemtechnik’s measurement train commutes at 200 km/h in some segments.

Therefore, the Serbian State Railways warned people to be extremely cautious near the railway line. Before, a woman was almost hit by a train in a suburban station in Belgrade. Here is the shocking video:

Péter Szijjártó called the Belgrade-Budapest railway upgrade projects the flagship of the Central European infrastructure developments. He added the new line would be ready by 2025. However, Serbian President Vucic talked about summer 2026. Infostart highlighted that nothing is certain about the end of the project. PM Viktor Orbán also confirmed the 2026 finish date in an interview.

The general elections will be held in Hungary in spring 2026.

Hungarian motorway remains closed for almost a year

A section of the M30 motorway, which connects Miskolc (NE Hungary) with the border of Slovakia, is undergoing repairs under warranty, the Construction and Transportation Ministry said on Friday. The ministry noted that the stretch, between Miskolc and Szikszó, had been closed since February because of cracks and sinking. Experts estimate that repairs could take 10-11 months, it added. The stretch, built by a consortium of STRABAG Építő Ltd. and STRABAG AG and opened in October 2021, is still under warranty.

Controversies at Wizz Air: Flight cancellations followed by bonus announcement for CEO

wizz air middle east debrecen tourism travel flight

Wizz Air cancelled a scheduled flight from Podgorica to Budapest after hours of delays, leaving passengers stranded overnight at the Montenegrin airport. However, despite the recent cancellations and delays, the airline sparked further controversy by announcing a new bonus package for its CEO, József Váradi.

After hours of waiting, Wizz Air cancelled its scheduled flight from Podgorica, Montenegro, to Budapest, Hungary, leaving several passengers stranded at the Montenegrin airport, HVG reports. The flight was originally set to depart at 12:50 PM on Tuesday but was officially cancelled around midnight. Many passengers spent the night on plastic chairs at the airport. One passenger reported that throughout the day, they were reassured that the flight would eventually take off.

After five hours of waiting, they watched a flight to Gdansk depart from Podgorica. At that point, passengers received vouchers worth HUF 4,600 (about EUR 12), followed later by another HUF 6,000 voucher (about EUR 16). Despite reopening the gate at 9 PM, the airline provided no clear information about the cause of the delay.

Wizz Air offers direct flights from Podgorica to Budapest twice a week, on Saturdays and Tuesdays. Initially, stranded passengers were told they could fly home on Saturday, but that flight was already fully booked. The next available flight wasn’t until the following Tuesday. Eventually, Wizz Air advised passengers to make their own way home, resulting in significant additional costs.

In response to the situation, Wizz Air told HVG that the flight had to be cancelled due to adverse weather conditions, which prevented the safe operation. The flight from Budapest had attempted to land at Podgorica but was diverted to Tirana due to the weather. Despite repeated efforts, the weather remained unsuitable for landing in Podgorica, forcing the plane to return to Budapest as the crew’s working hours were ending.

Bonus for the difficult times for Wizz Air’s CEO

In other news, Wizz Air announced a new bonus package for CEO József Váradi, despite recent cancellations and delays, HVG reports. According to Bloomberg, the airline plans to award Váradi a one-time share bonus of around GBP 700,000, three times his annual salary, set for payment on 1 October. Additionally, a long-term incentive package from 2026 could be worth five times his salary.

Last year, shareholders approved a two-year extension to Váradi’s bonus plan, which includes a potential GBP 100 million reward if he increases Wizz Air’s stock value to GBP 120 by 2021. Current bonuses would contribute to this target, however, the goal remains challenging, as Wizz Air’s stock price currently hovers around GBP 13.5, having dropped from GBP 22 since the onset of the Russia-Ukraine war and the summer airport chaos.

The company argues that this new compensation package is necessary to retain Váradi, who reportedly earns less than most airline executives. The bonus is intended to motivate him to guide Wizz Air through “difficult times” and improve the company’s performance.

Hungary’s busiest motorways to Austria, Lake Balaton to become 4-lane!

The Hungarian Concession Infrastructure Development Plc. (Magyar Koncessziós Infrastruktúra Fejlesztő Zrt., MKIF) is operating 1,237 kilometres of motorway in Hungary. They announced the development of the two busiest motorways in Hungary, the M1 connecting Budapest with Austria and the M7 connecting the Hungarian capital with Lake Balaton and Croatia. The renewed motorways will have 3+1X3+1 lanes in several segments, instead of the current 2X2. Hopefully, there will be fewer traffic jams towards Austria and Croatia after the extension.

Motorways will be renewed in Hungary

According to index.hu, the company will operate and extend 1,237 kilometres of Hungarian motorway until 2057. The MKIF is in the ownership of a consortium of private equity funds belonging to László Szíjj and Lőrinc Mészáros, two well-known Hungarian government-close businessmen. Antal Rogán, the Head of the Cabinet of the Prime Minister, said the contract with the MKIF can be extended with the M5 and M6 motorways.

The MKIF started to operate most of the Hungarian motorways from 1 September 2022. Until 2034, they undertook the obligation to build 279 kilometres of high-speed road and 299 kilometres of motorway. Before that, they have to bring the motorway pavements to a uniform level, which means the renovation of 538 kilometres. The deadline for this project is 31 August 2025. In 2023, they finished 3.6 million sqm, and in 2024, they completed 3.9 million sqm, 20% of the total highway pavement. Moreover, they will renew 200 bridges and overpasses.

Developments will start in 2025

In the next few years, MKIF plans to extend the M1, M7 and M3 motorways. The M1 will be extended between the M0 ringroad and the Austrian-Hungarian border. The M7 will be extended between the M0 and Balatonvilágos, while the M3 between Budapest’s Szentmihályi Street and Gyöngyös.

The extension of the M1 will start in 2025, the M7 in 2027, and the M3 in 2031. The third lane between the M0 and Concó will be ready in three years. The MKIF will build intelligent hard shoulders (ITS), which will open for drivers only if traffic is heavy. As a result, in peak hours, vehicles will be able to use four lanes to Austria and back to Győr. Between Győr and Hegyeshalom, the 2X2 lanes will remain, with an additional ITS.

The details of the extensions

The M7 motorway will have four lanes (3+1) until Szabadbattyán, and between Szabadbattyán and Balatonvilágos, there will be 2+1 lanes. Work will start in 2027. The construction of M200, connecting Komárom and Székesfehérvár, will also begin three years later.

The M3 will have 3+1 lanes until Gyöngyös, but the project will only start in 2031.

In Polgárdi, Hungary’s most modern asphalt mixing plant is under construction. The test period will start in October. The plant aims to help the operation and extension of the M7 motorway.
