Hungary’s interior ministry issues drought alert – UPDATE

dryness drought

The interior ministry has issued a drought alert for the whole country starting on Monday.

According to the ministry, a lack of rain in recent weeks has now reduced humidity in the upper layers of the soil below 40 percent.

Soils have not been able to replenish due to lack of winter precipitation, and are drying out due to increasing rainfall deficits.

Significant, nationwide precipitation is still not expected, with mostly sunny, dry and warm weather forecast, increasing water scarcity and posing a serious problem for the development of the autumn crops.

Under the alert, farmers have been allowed to use surface waters for irrigation without applying for a permit and paying a fee.

Govt to spend HUF 200 bn on water system rehabilitation in S Hungary

The government will plough 200 billion forints (EUR 532.1m) into rehabilitating the water system of an arid region in southern Hungary, in the next eight years, István Láng, the head of the General Directorate of Water Management said in a talk with President János Áder.

In his Blue Planet (Kék bolygó) podcast broadcast on Monday, Áder said the development is expected to help the region retain its residents and revive wildlife, by creating marshes and lakes. Water quality will improve, as will revenues from agriculture, he said.

He noted that the UN has declared the region between the Danube and Tisza rivers a semi-desert. Dwindling water reserves are due to climate change and to forestation aimed to tie down the sand providing the soil of the region, as well as to human water usage, he said.

Láng said water supplies would be replenished from the Danube and Tisza, purifyied waste water and from ground waters.

Áder said the development, scheduled until 2030, is expected to show the first results within 4-5 years.

It might snow today, but tomorrow could bring spring to Hungary! – PHOTOS

Are you planning an excursion for the weekend? You should time it for tomorrow.

Last week, it was so cold that some big Hungarian lakes, like Lake Balaton or Lake Tisza, froze.

Last weekend, the wind was so strong that the damage it caused reached HUF 1 billion (EUR 2.8 million).

Yesterday morning, a thin layer of snow covered Debrecen in Eastern Hungary.

Today, there is a chance that it might snow in some parts of the country, but it seems that by Friday, spring will arrive.

Weather
At the beginning of January, the weather was warm as well. Afterwards, winter arrived with lows reaching -20 °C in some parts of the country. Photo: MTI/György Varga

Hungary experiences turbulent weather these days. Experts say that it is because of climate change. According to the weather forecast of index.hu, on Thursday afternoon, there were clouds in many parts of the country. Above the eastern, northeastern counties, the layers of cloud will be thicker, but there will be no precipitation.

The temperature will be around 4-9 degrees Celsius. Moreover, we will not experience strong winds anywhere in Hungary. In Eastern Hungary, the clouds will disappear by Friday morning.

On Friday, cloudy and sunny periods will alternate in most parts of Hungary, MTI writes. We should expect southwestern winds. The lowest temperatures will be between -3 and +3 °C, while the highest temperatures will reach between 6 and 13 °C. In the east, there will be fewer sunny hours. By Friday noon, one should expect snow there, too.

However, according to idokep.hu, a new cold front will hit Hungary on Saturday. As a result, the wind will be stormy, but it will not bring any precipitation.

Therefore, if you have planned a trip anywhere, or just a walk in nature, you should time it for tomorrow.

The stormy weather over the weekend caused extreme damages, significant transportation delays and many service disruptions across the country. The photos of the damage speak for themselves.

The hurricane-force winds over the weekend left extreme damage in Hungary. At Lake Balaton, the strongest wind (119.5 km/h) was measured in Siófok that crushed the ice on the Hungarian sea.

Moreover, the windy weather left behind broken branches and fallen trees all across the country.

Many trees fell on roads, houses, fences, cars and power lines, and the wind also damaged the roofs of buildings.

As the Hungarian news portal Helló Magyar reports, most of the emergency calls came from Budapest and Pest county, but many alarms were also received from Bács-Kiskun and Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok counties.

The damages caused significant delays in public transport.

Train cancellations on several routes, 1-2 hour delays and replacement bus services were experienced by passengers travelling by train on Sunday evening. Train speed was limited on several lines in order to prevent power line breaks and power cuts.

The hurricane-force winds caused power cuts in several places across the country, leaving thousands of users without access to mobile and fixed telephone, internet and cable TV services. The damages affected most parts of Kecskemét, Albertirsa, Tatabánya and Oroszlány.

According to the National Directorate General for Disaster Management (OKF), firefighters were called out to 1,654 incidents on Sunday due to windy weather. A significant number of the alarms were due to

building and chimney damages, hanging tiles, tin sheets, advertising signs, and in some places traffic lights blown down by the wind.

In addition, eight family houses have become temporarily uninhabitable due to damage caused by strong winds on Sunday. The 34 people concerned were taken in by their relatives.

The crazy winter of 1987

Hungary, with a few exceptions, is not really a place of really cold winters. In the last few years, winters have generally been milder, often only letting us see snow for the first time in January, and it was not really typical for the snow to last too long either. It is also true that the winters are becoming less predictable and more extreme. However, it was not always like that.

One of the most famous winters in modern history is the legendary winter of 1987 when temperatures were as low as almost minus twenty degrees in Budapest, and a lot of snow fell as well.

The city stood completely still at this time. However, a similar situation will not be expected this time.

In the following picture, you can see how it looked that crazy winter in Budapest right at the Mester utca-Ferenc körút corner:
